if you wanna know how i made the queen style intro music i did a video about it for members of the Geno7 Fun Club www.patreon.com/posts/how-i-made-queen-73197558?Link&
"Do you ever have those bands where you hear one song and immediately fall in love with them but when you try to dig into them you're hit with the crushing realization that their entire discography is barely even an album's worth of songs?" I can't forgive you because you say this then proceed to introduce Panicland. and I am hooked
You might enjoy "Heavenly", a french power metal band that gives you a glimpse into what Queen would sound like if they played full on metal. Especially in songs like "A Better Me".
i love that googling foxy shazam almost immediately brings up the tv tropes page saying "the self appointed evel knievel of rock n roll"
I recall there being many more songs by My Chemical Romance that also sounded like Queen
Also every power metal band owes a lot to Queen
God this makes me SO BADLY want to deconstruct the term "Beatle-esque" music but I think that could literally constitute a master's thesis
What an incredible list of music to now discover! I am surprised that Daisuke Ishiwatari, the everything behind Guilty Gear, wasn't on this list, as he is pretty blatant about his love of Queen.
Love for Queen isnt the same as being skilled enough to make good music like Queen. Most of GG's soundtrack is a series of poorly transitioned wet farts.
16:35 10cc are most famous now for "I'm Not in Love" being featured in the opening of Guardians of the Galaxy, but before that two of the band members broke off as Godley & Creme and had success of their own, most notably with "Cry", the first time facemorphing was scene on film.
It's so nice to see someone else point out how much "Raison D'Etre" sounds like a forgotten Queen song, however briefly. It's as if Brian May took a side job working for Sanrio back in the 1970s and mashed up "The Millionaire's Waltz" with "Somebody To Love", then translated it into Japanese so a _seiyuu_ could sing it while pretending to be Hello Kitty.
Great video.
Oh another band I found is 'Mystery' the title track of their only album 'A nap gyermeke' is an homage to Bohemian Rhapsody, and the whole album has queen written all over it, in songs like 'Napraforgo' and 'Uj nap Uj kep'.
FOXY SHAZAM is really, REALLY good. I met the band a few years ago and what attracted me was precisely the similarity with Queen, mainly in Self Entitled and Church of Rock and Roll. Listening deeper into the discography, Foxy Shazam really has a unique glow. The first albums, the ones mentioned above and Gonzo have a style so different from each other, even so they have a very characteristic signature sound.
I was so excited when I found out they're back from hiatus and I can't wait to hear more from this amazing band.
I'm only a few minutes into the video, but I've thought about this before too. I'd say ELO sounds a lot like Queen to me, particularly the way they take the vocals, leaning into that higher range, sometimes layering multiple tracks on top of eachother, and the general sound of everything. Turn To Stone is a good example, I think. Haven't listened to their entire discography. I definitely feel like this about Styx as well, but I saw that listed in the description so I won't go off on that, haha.
The band that Jeff Lynne was in before he joined ELO, The Idle Race, also sounds a bit Queen-ish at times. I think a lot of the elements of Queen's sound were distilled from things that English art rock bands were doing in the late 1960s.
haha don't bring me down too, i thought that was a queen song the first five times i listened to it
capability brown is screaming "ziggy stardust" at me
Usually, when I think "Queen + japan" I think more about Jojo and/or Guilty Gear (More because the bands are referenced in both series), but the japan segment was quite enlightening.
Discovered you initially with the "Wario Land 4 music" video, but I just began a binge of your videos beginning by the Afterschool Charisma video.
Didn't expect Daniel Balavoine (from "Je m'appelle Henry" fame in my case) to be that similar to Queen.
You know the video is good when I need to keep Spotify open in the other tab.
4:49 You're definitely still allowed to make fun of the Quintonononononing.
I found this video from another TH-camr and I'm sticking around. This is stuffed to the gills with some good music recs. I actually had to pause partway through to listen to Cruella De Ville's discography before I came back to check out the other recommendations
This man really made a video naming every band in my library
Another band similar to queen is the pre ELO 60s. "The Move" theys were like the who but wanted to focus more on 3 and 4 part Harmonys. "Disturbed" is a great song.
I just saw your Mario RPG video and now I stumbled across this one. Queen is the only band that I’ve went through their entire discography for sand I’ve been curious about this for a while. Thanks for sharing and I’ll be sure to check a few of these out
I'd also recommend "Keeping the Dream Alive" from the album "Fantasy" by the band Muchener Freiheit. The band is German and obscure to the US. Their Spotify albums have almost no streams, which is crazy. The whole Fantasy album has layered Queen-esque harmonies, but "Keeping the Dream" is the most orchestral.
checking out your other stuff after seeing the wario land video, this is a really neat roundup of bands and even though i'm not a big queen guy i gotta respect the dedication! genuinely surprised not to see my chemical romance in here though, the black parade album has their most overt glam rock worship but they've always had a big queen influence, especially in the lead guitar parts
"Post-Jellyfish Activity" would be a great name for a Jellyfish revival band.
Ohh , does anyone else remember The scissor sisters? They were a little Queen IMHO, also if you include a death metal band i count Nitro as a Queenish band, i mean they were the most 80's of the 80's bands
Scissor Sisters kicked ass.
Oh yeah, I saw them live in 2016, great show!
@@CurlyChop you saw Nitro? Holy shit!
@@lamecasuelas2 sorry, I should have specified! I saw the scissor sisters! I'll look into Nitro more, I listened to a couple of songs and they're cool!
@@CurlyChop ohhhh! No no no! I asked because i thought they had broken up like in the 90's, hahaha!
Can’t wait for the Jellyfish video. That band knows how to make great tunes.
You have to add "God Killed Rock and Roll", "Something About Maggie", and "Sad Clown" (by Panic! at the Disco) to your playlist. All these songs have bombastic operatic vocals, May-esque guitar, and harpsichord. And it was deliberately derivative too, which I think is awesome.
The final Panic! album (Viva Las Vengeance) was sort of an homage to Queen, the frontman Brendon Urie has a tattoo Freddy Mercury, and his cover of Bohemian Rhapsody for Suicide Squad has 100 million streams.
00:11:28 ive always thought this! The siouxsie and the banshees version of this town aint big enough for both of us sounds even more like a queen song, that piano is straight out of Queen II
Have you ever listened to “Don’t Get 2 Close 2 My Fantasy” by Ween? I think it sounds almost like a Queen song.
You can find a Ween song for any occasion. What a weird, incredible band.
genuinely one of my fave documentarys, i hope your vids exploded in views, also its not 100% but im adding the first glass beach album
i almost always have a hard time taking music recommendations from people, but here i am sitting 50 minutes later with cruella de ville, foxy shazam, licorice quartet and carmen open in a bunch of chrome tabs. this is awesome
good ass video!! though they arent anime exactly, suprised you didnt mention guilty gear’s music.
If you don't know them, there's definitely two songs you need to know. "Romeo" by Mr Big and "Danger on the Titanic" by Sailor. Mr Big (the 70s British band, not the 80s American band) I'd describe as Queen as led by Yes' Jon Anderson. I discovered them while researching pop hits of the 70s that charted outside the top 40, and it's one of the real gems I unearthed.
Sailor were an odd band. They were sort of a cross between Sparks and Roxy Music with an Edwardian sailor theme. The James William Guercio-produced Dressed for Drowning (which "Danger on the Titanic" is from) represented a stylistic departure that didn't sit well with fans (female singer Virginia David was a particular sticking point), but their art-deco Queen influenced style was pretty intriguing for me.
If you doubt the influence, both these songs have promo videos referencing "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Kinda surprised you put fun. on the list but not Nate Ruess' earlier band The Format. Most of the album Dog Problems hits those Queen vibes pretty hard, maybe with a little bit of extra Beach Boys mixed in.
Also the album Yes Yes Yes by Elsinore has a ton of Queen influence and some surprisingly effective lyrics that manage to make climate change and the fall of capitalism into a metaphor for failing relationships.
immediately scrolled thru the chapters to look for the sparks section
A few bands I think could have definitely been included are My Chemical Romance, Blind Guardian, and even Dream Theater on a few occasions.
thought of Blind Guardian right after reading the title
I also always thought of Brian May when I first heard the music in Rayearth
Dude, you have to check out Cats in Space!
Great job on this video, though. I absolutely LOVE Sweet. I think "Love Is Like Oxygen" sounds more like ELO than Queen, but regardless, my fave part of the song is the guy who echoes the lead vocal in baritone ("too high," "gonna die"). I mean, seriously, how could anyone not love that guy?!?
Thanks for giving me Justin Hawkins' origin story. I'm a regular viewer of his channel, & figured he must have done something to garner the amount of respect he wields. Now I know!
Also, I have a vague recollection of Jellyfish, but now, thanks to you, I'm setting out to find everything I can of theirs online. How did I let them slip past me?
New sub. I look forward to future uploads!
AHAHA I knew sparks would be here bc of my TMBG deep dive
I come from the Warioland video and I'm not even a Queen fan / enthusiast and I watched the whole thing, very good work my friend, keep it up. I love how passionate and meticulous you are with your investigations.
Late to the party, but there was also the quite queenish Total Amnesia by Voyager from 1979.
18:27 yeah it's called AOR (adult oriented rock) but Kansas was progressive rock and not part of that scene.
Let’s go!!! You make everything exciting! I love the shredding you added to the theme for this one, tasty and smart.
46:17 while were on the topic of Brendan Small, id like to also submit the Rock Opera adaptation of Franz Kafka's metamorphosis written by Wayne (also voiced by Brendan) in Home Movies. As i recall it directly references the Bohemian Rhapsody music video?
For the love of all that is good please make a video about Brian Scary. You are ligit the first person I have ever heard mutter his name outside of me shoving his music down the earholes of my friends and family. Please!
I honestly really wish I'd had time to mention him hes one of my favorites. Maybe in a future video
Wow this video was made especially for me, a weird little Queen freak. I can't believe you mentioned the Simon Ferocious incident and then just, didn't clarify it. That must be incomprehensible to anyone but other weird little Queen freaks. As someone who has listened to objectively too much Queen, every song you played immediately made me go "Oh, that DOES sound like Queen" and it was wild. They have so many little signatures I never thought about before. I'll for sure check out some of these artists, thanks for all your hard work!
Not sure if you're still adding to the playlist. But may I recommend Uriah Heep? You could describe them as Queen mixed with Deep Purple or Styx. They have three part vocals, as well as a flamboyant, mustached singer.
I just now noticed you pointed out the music player you used now my ADHD is a curse sometimes
24:13 order of my thoughts here:
-Hey, that one sings in french
-... with a very familiar voice
-Balavoine? What are you doing here?
Just to be clear, this guy is still one of the most popular french singers active during the 80's. And I would encourage people to look up his most famous songs ("l'aziza" and "mon fils ma bataille" for example) but with the caveat that the lyrics are very very important in his work. It still feels a bit odd to have him compared to Queen, of all bands
Surprised I knew a few of these already and like them more than Queen lol. Great suggestions as well.
me for 11 minutes and thirty four seconds "TALK ABOUT SPARKS TALK ABOUT SPARKS TALK ABOUT SPARKS"
I've always thought this as well - how could one of the most successful acclaimed popular bands of all time, leave such little mark on the rest of the industry in terms of follow-up inspired acts, unlike the Beatles etc? But of course, it tends to pop up in places you might not expect it. The section on their influence on Japan was real interesting - even normal rock bands tend to have a Queenish flavor to them.
It's not quite Queen but just based on your general tastes (and Mother video) I'd recommend Moon Safari (Blomljud and Lover's End).
For Muse, you need to listen to their second and third albums.
"If Queen were a Power Metal band"
What do you think Ogre Battle or Gimme The Prize are??
pretty clever to name a band influenced by queen after a game that itself is named after a queen song
great work!
Hot dang, thanks for introducing me to Cruella De Ville. You had me at "goth Queen" and this stuff is right up my alley.
An honorable mention... listen to the song 3 Chains O' Gold by Prince. It has a striking structural similarity to Bohemian Rhapsody, and starting at the 2:12 mark it becomes an almost obvious homage.
Really great video! First i've seen by you but you're already very fun to watch.
Ngl, I think you just got me obsessed with Cruella De Ville...
and also for the Jellyfish section, there's some big Jason Falkner erasure going on smh. his solo stuff is pretty great power pop
Loved the video!! You editing is so stylish. tyty for all the great recommendations. Hopefully this time the yt copyright doesn’t fuck with it
Underated video. I just found your stuff and I'm here for it.
Good vid / list. But check out T-Ride (Telluride) - "Zombies From Hell." They're on TH-cam and have a Wikipedia page. They were a Frisko band who got a million-dollar advance (highest ever at that point), and spent so long making their debut record, overdubbing 20 guitar and 20 operatic vocal tracks on every song, that by the time it came out, Nirvana had hit and T-ride was dead in the water. Eric Valentine went on to run a studio and record some cool stuff though.
""Body Language ↑⬱" is still Queen's best song. And yes the arrows are part of the title
check images and words by dream theater, not too queenie but it has it as an influence, also that mr bungle track reminded me of some splatoon 2 tracks
and also mother love bone, a weird proto grunge band that took freddie mercury as a messianical figure
Great video, I’m really glad I found your channel. You’ve got a great sense of humor and style. I Would definitely recommend people check out the band “Bear Ghost”, They have a lot of Queen influences in their sound.
I find the lack of Struts and Protomen disturbing
Interesting video, very well done! There is no convincing argument whatsoever that Une Nuit A Paris inspired Freddie Mercury to create Bohemian Rhapsody, when you known that he wrote My Fairy King and March of The Black Queen before Bohemian Rhapsody. He also started writing Bohemian Rhapsody in the 60's. Une Nuit A Paris is closer to the Vaudeville style of Bring Back That Leroy Brown or Seaside Rendezvous or Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon. Bands such 10cc and Sweet were great bands in their own right, but it does seem as if they like to claim that Queen took ideas from them, when there is really no evidence for it. Queen manged to create complex music, that the general public still enjoyed, which is a very rare talent, and this might likely be why some of these bands were somewhat frustrated by during the 70's.
My Chemical Romance is also another obvious one, and The Struts. Matt Bellamy's highest falsetto note is around C#6, it is high but nothing out of the ordinary.
Shocked Cardiacs wasn't mentioned here- check out Sing To God's poppier tracks like Bellyeye, Manhoo, or Odd Even and tell me it doesn't sound like Queen.
just discovered your channel from the mother video and i’m amazed with your content especially when music related, although i have no interest in anime which you said is the main theme in the channel, i subscribed in hopes of seeing more of this and the mother one, keep it up man
as a french person danielle balavoine is one of the best french artist it's an honor to be in this video
There not just Good, Absolutely GREAT
You should check out Jukebox the Ghost and the later The Matches albums! Them and Jellyfish fish were the first ones that popped in my head. But great stuff!
This is a super underrated video. I love your video style mate!
What program allows for music to get rendered into those neat graphic’s whenever he shows us samples of music I’ve seen it all over the internet but I don’t have a name to place it
I'm so happy to see Valensia mentioned on this video, huge fan of his music
This channel is 👌
Well, time to throw myself at Jellyfish!
Excellent video. Queen were so distinctive, and such fussy and eclectic perfectionists in the studio, it doesn’t surprise me few bands followed in their wake…plus they had the benefit of having three great singers. Most bands are lucky to have one!
That said, thank you for clueing me in to some bands that dared to follow the Queen template! Some (like Foxy Shazam and Jellyfish) were already personal favorites, but others I had never heard of and I will definitely be checking out.
Came from your Wario video, good video here! I love the music from Jellyfish/Foxy Shazam. Funny enough, Jellyfish made music for a Nintendo product once.
Wait is your intro of the band members all from live at the rainbow 74? I love it
I live in San Diego an when you said 91x I lost my marbles
I was recommended this video, and goddamn!
ooooh so thats why i failed to find any jellyfish songs besides like one album and im not just stupid
Great video! I'm really interested to hear how you find these bands, I try to do this all the time with my favorite bands and genres but most of the time i come up empty handed. Do you just listen to everything and keep the best stuff?
Another good example of a Japanese band taking inspiration from Queen would be One Ok Rock, especially their song "When They Turn the Lights On". They're primarily known for imitating an American style and that may be why they were brought in for Sonic Frontiers.
i got one, "silver" by ted gärdestad. it was released right around the same time queen were becoming big and I have no idea if it is actually inspired by them but at least to me the similarities are striking.
Oh damn this is a pretty good one. Wish I could find it on spotify so I could add it to the playlist
@@geno7_ i can find it here in sweden.
Doesn't The Darkness have that one really great Christmas Song?
subbed
The sweet is influence by Queen
Now THATS a good video, goddamn.
well after that dope Simpsons reference I have to sub
Take two babey!
Aaaand we're back babee!
queenlike
In the early 90s, Roy Thomas Baker produced an LA band called Mozart with an enigmatic lead singer who sang so much like Freddie that people thought the debut Mozart record was secretly Queen under another name. They ruled the Sunset Strip in 91-92, there's a Roxy concert on TH-cam with concert versions of all their most Queen like songs from this album - th-cam.com/video/y8XPwFARt00/w-d-xo.html
Fantastic video but no love for Extreme?
I started watching this video, and when you mentioned the "ascending line cliche" i imediately thought of Holy Touch Riff by Fox Shazam... but since you said that's the "moment you all've been waiting for" makes me feel like a basic bitch
11:39 im still laughing oh gosh
plokstar enjoys music and this video
Good bideo
You know another album that sounds remotely Queen-like? Ricochet by the Bay City Rollers. It's got the operatic backing vocals at times, and some of the cadences are straight up ripped out of Queen's albums. Listen to 'Doors, Bars, Metal' and 'Ride' and you can hear the Queen influence. It's a great album considering it's by some 70s boyband rockers in the 80s.
21:35 RICHARD FORTNITE BLEVANS?
