In 2018 I beat Luigi's mansion for the first time with my ex. It was basically all in one sitting, and I got kind of complacent about saving after a few hours of playing. I ended up beating everything after you start using elemental medallions in a row without saving and made it all the way to bowser, when for whatever reason that big dumb lizard legitimately spooked me, I lost my nerve and died stupidly. Upon realizing I hadn't saved in hours, I almost quit the game for the day, but my ex urged me to try again and together we rushed through the second half of the game in record time and killed bowser in cold blood. Revenge never tasted so sweet. Luigi's Mansion 10/10 best game of all time I've been meaning to do the reverse mansion ever since. Nobody remind me how long it's been since 2018 I beg you

YOOOOO FALSE MEMORY AND UNDETECTABLE BOX MENTION WOOOOO Im so happy i found this video in my recommendations. False Memory has been like, one of my favorite things for the past few years. And this video finally got me to sit down and watch all of Undetectable Box, too. (Which before, I kinda just saw as that thing they made before False Memory, and I couldn’t get all the way through it cause of its lower production quality.) It was interesting hearing that the subs of FM felt a bit sub-par and that Fang Tang’s explanation on the mechanics of Bug Men were confusing to you! I speak some mandarin, so maybe this is the kinda thing where people who are only reading the subtitles can feel something “off” and fully fluent speakers can easily hear when what’s being said doesn’t match what’s being spoken, while people who are like me and only partially understand the language don’t notice anything lol. Another thing is that, in my opinion, False Memory doesn’t necessarily NEED any follow-up, for the most part. It would be nice to see more of Fang Tang and Bai Zhong and maybe the rest of the memory processing bureau, (or whatever it’s called), but FM itself feels complete to me. I think literally the only thing that would feel weird to not get any further elaboration on is that bit where it’s implied that Bai Zhong was a Bug Source (I think?) before she arrived at the recycling place. And yes, the ET dub is SO GOOD! Literally the only complaints I have with it are that it butchers the names sometimes (eh, pinyin’s not that helpful of a pronunciation guide for english speakers, i get it…) and sometimes the timing feels a little off (common problem in dubs, often pretty hard to work around). Sometimes I think I might prefer Bai Zhong’s english voice? Although I do love both. So yeah, this has been a lot of words lmaoo, but great video! Having now watched Undetectable Box, I can now say I agree with you, that shit’s awesome

This is overall a really great video and a wonderful retrospective of MFGG's early years, however as someone who's made Mario fangames before, the line at 13:50 really resonated with me. When I was starting out with fangames, I was dying to make the Mario game that "Nintendo hadn't made yet". Which eventually lead to Super Mario Bros. Dimensions, a game that tries to replicate NES-era Mario platformers with its own twist. However, later down the line, I wound up making games that "Nintendo would never make", being the Mario Drinks A Glass of Milk trilogy, which is essentially Mario-meets-Mega Man with a plot line centered around dairy products. But honestly? I had more fun making the latter games because I wasn't concerned with having to conform to a Nintendo seal of quality, and could just get weird with it and implement whatever ideas came to mind. I personally believe the weirder Mario fangames have often been more creative and experimental than the safer, more ambitious ones. And Mushroom Pancakes is a perfect showcase of that kind of outside-the-box creativity.

29:09 The brass sample used in the remasters are, in fact, different than the one used in Wario Land 4. The remastered sample comes from Mega Party Game$! sound data, which didn't use a HQ ver. of the OG brass sample (for some reason). This is the same reason why the stringy-sounding brass (ex: ~16 seconds into Work It!) uses said remaster brass sample (which in the context of the stringy-sounding brass, is less accurate to the OG than the other brass, I personally just EQ it, it depends if you're lazy or not lol). EDIT 1: i just realized that the "DAOW!" sample in Party Game$! is different than what's used in Wario land 4 jesus christ how many samples are different in Party Game$! than what was actually used in WL4's samples dear god

I've always found it interesting how I can't think of a single well known indie game out there that uses mario's unique powerup system. There's plenty of games that are broadly similar to mario in gameplay, but what I think of as the defining feature that is the powerup system is never used. I imagine it's because of the difficulty of designing levels and interesting powerups with the possibility that any powerup could be used in any scenario, but many mario fangames have attempted unique powerups, so it's strange that no well known games using that formula have jumped from fangame to original indie ip, especially considering pizza tower and antonblast basically just aping the warioland 4 formula and still getting lots of popularity. Though I guess that's more because of the long drought of the series, maybe people are less willing to spend money on a game inspired by a series that's still going strong? Or maybe something innovative and with enough eyes on it just hasn't come. also I'm really curious where that "the Wario portion of the video" comes from
