15:59 The Boom-womp (Goom-wah or Low Bork) sound effect was literally used by Valentine because I heard one in Wander Over Yonder, especially the episode "The Family Reunion."

That was an impressive documentary about the man with his power-puffin punch pack of distinct sound cartooning.
And not to mentioned, he also worked on Minky Momo English Dub, Mario Super Show and Jay Jay the Jetplane, an infamous PBS Kids show. Also talking of Jeff, he has a few of Joel SFX to put on certain shows since 3rd season of Dexter’s Lab. I’ve heard the swish sound in a kangaroo jumping meme of Squidward kicking out any character out.
I'd like to give thanks for using my fan works for this video like my SFX Album cover and a WOMBO COMBO meme, I'm glad you appreciated it.
P.S. I see TwinBee and WinBee in the intro.

Him and the crew at Hacienda Post both have a great library of sound effects.
Oh and don't forget. This guy's sound effects were very impactful for Cartoon Network as its studio division slowly began using his sound effects, alongside the Hacienda Post sounds, more often starting with Whatever Happened to Robot Jones up until The Cartoonstitue, as well as OK K.O.!: Let's Be Heroes. The shows created by Maxwell Atoms, Camp Lazlo and the action-oriented series were expections, though. The most common sound effect used was the "swish".
Funny enough, Joel Valentine's sound effects were later heard in some indie animated series, like Pencilmation.

    why hasn't this blown up
i always dug the sound design in those cartoons. Hanna barbanime is a really great way to describe it. That explosion sounds at the start of the body swap episode in PPG stuck with me for some reason.
I also really think ed edd n eddy sounds are really good. The way they use random sound effects and the way they combine them is really clever. The way they combine impact sounds with animal noises and car horns is really great. It also helps that they don't really use common stock cartoon sounds. They give EEnE a unique identity. That yodel sound, la curacha horn, and the sumo sounds are iconic. I had to do a double take when I heard the yodel sound in Nozaki Kun.
As soon as someone dropped a zip of sounds I put eene sounds on The Raid.

One of the recontextualising I noticed in these cartoons is using a sound that would originally be used for cold chattering and instead use it for frustrated vibrating hands

This video was so good geno!!!! it's so well organized, punched up, edited, and just plain informative and interesting, like damn these sound effects are so engrained in my memory but i've never really stopped to think about how they were made/selected or how they went on to influence the sensibilities of shows that came after! it's so crazy that he worked on redubbing sfx for anime... ive always wondered about that whole phenomenon and its so neat to think that maybe that influenced his other sound effects... i also loved the parallels you drew to sfx with music production, very clever!!! great work all around!!

Joel Valentine SFX is My personal favorite in history. I remember MinMin with Joel (CartoonsSoundEffects) and Game Tengoku with Joel Valentine by Mamon Star was a great time early 2020's. But i herad explosion sfx remaster when never appear in TH-cam and Wiki SFX unfortunately about your file pack in Dropbox because was deleted of today.

    • @geno7_
      @geno7_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

oh sorry about the file pack, I was having some trouble with dropbox over the past couple days. it should be back up now though. But yeah there's more than a few sound effects in that pack that I literally sampled myself, and I did a few variations on the explosion sound effect. I seem to remember I made one of them by taking two different instances of it and crossfading them together to block out other sound effects. There's also a lot missing from it I think, at some point there should be some kind of standard soundpack that has all of em

really appreciate the likening of digital sampling to crate digging. i've always used the phrase "digital crate digging" to describe this phenomenon of digging thru massive digital libraries and directories for rare tunes for DJing, or obscure sounds for music production. i think there's an art to combing thru material for something that is special and/or can be recontextualized for special purposes. and to cap it off w that clip of j rocc digging thru dilla's storage unit just killed me 😙👌 beautifully done all around

It is about time someone gave this audio savant his credits due.
The combinations of distinct samples and libraries used; and the "crisp" timing and careful amount the scenes called for, made his career what it is.
Without him, many of the shows he worked on would not have been remotely the same.
~ Would kill to get my hands on the stuff he used, - Josh Hutcherson's too (And the invader zim sound guy).

Not going to mention his work for Harmony gold?, or the fact that he got all his anime sound effects from macross when working on Robotech, And relied on his “Frankenstein library “up until the late ‘00. Head Sample whatever he could grab from the music and effects truck from Macross and other anime that harmony gold dubbed. Anime sound effects were being used within the industry starting around 1984 because of the sound editors for Voltron, as their library of effects that were ripped from golion and dairugger Made their way out into shows like DC’s superpowers Show, gobots. And they eventually find their way into the hands of Marvel productions who would then intern use them on like season three of transformers, visionaries and so on. Joel had access to those as well, he’s essentially a western sound design pioneer, and probably a large reason why a lot of Americans are familiar with Japanese sound design

this fucks dude, really well done. I can't wait to see what you're gonna do in the future. One tiny little bit of critique though, it sounds like you've got some slight static in the narration track, could be the volume compression or maybe just your recording environment. Its mostly noticable in the opening of the video. Still though, glad to be subscriber 25 lmao.

As soon as you said Joel Valentine, I perked up remembering his work on Primal. His sound design credit is one of those credits that are front and center in the intro credits to that show. Knowing that he has been working with Tartakovsky and McCracken since the 90s made me respect that name so much more.

I always thought the CN sound came from the genius of Tartakovski, since he's got credits all over the departments that form animation, including sound. And Samurai Jack was the Tartakovskiest of his work and the sound designed was excellent, I thought 'no way he didn't have a major hand in this'. Perhaps he's a good all around director that respects sound and got to work with a talented person he vibed with.

I just wanna know what's in his library.
Anime sound effects aren't given the luxury of being bought out and hosted under one roof like Sound Ideas did with their old competitor The Hollywood Edge.
I wouldn't even know where to begin looking for Japanese sound effects libraries, much less the golden oldies Valentine has his hands on.
