@@meganhigley8838 a year-old comment I know, but the program since at least 2006 had been referred to as a "rebuilding phase" by multiple commentators of different networks even up to at least 2012. No one in 2008, not even Tim or Elfie, could have predicted that Bellu and Bitang would return, that former/retired and otherwise beloved gymnasts like Silivas, Raducan, Rosu, the FGR, and/or the media would have such a disconnect with a new generation to the point they would openly mock or attack Romania's new generation gymnasts on national TV or on their social media. And that's before getting into the internal drama with Ponor/Iordache even during Rio, or what Iordache had to deal with between qualifying to Tokyo, making the beam final but being injured, and the RGF just saying she didn't compete because she was scared of the competition. It's a dumpster fire, and although they did qualify a team to Paris with the assistance of coach Patrick Keins from the Netherlands, the retired gymnasts and the media do not give him any credit and are either talking down to the Romanian gymnasts or swearing at them in the mixed media zone. Let's not credit Tim and Elfie as though they were psychic.
Their commentary always seems to be gossiping about the athletes. If you listen to the British and Australian commentary they actually discuss the skills and routines being performed.

YUP even on primetime (not live) they didn't show nistor on bars, dragoi on beam, or izbasa on floor (all of whom made EF), or tamirjan on floor (euros bronze). they had some false narratives to push i guess LMAO
This is a disgrace. Maybe they should look at how much money Romanian gymnastics gets vs the United States, and then maybe a fair comparison can be made for their respective skills.

I was 10 years when I watched the Beijing Olympics. I didn't realize back then how horrendous and biased the NBC commentary was. They were literally on some kind of Western superiority complex and I didn't realize how bad their commentary was until I rewatched the final a couple years later.
This team proved less is more. Didn't like three gymnasts compete in entire team final? 💀 Maybe someone did UB but I'm pretty sure out of 12 total routines, 11 were done by three people haha.
Yes. Tamirjan and Nistor did AA, Izbasa 3 events, and Dragoi lead off on bars. Tamirjan was competing on what nobody knew was a fractured femur, and Nistor had 6 cortisone injections in her back in Beijing because she was having spasms.

@@holden_fan ye was the 2003 world beam champion who was absolutely *spectacular* on beam (she had the same coach as yang bo, who is widely considered the best beam worker of all time, and shared a lot of similarities in form and technique). One of her trademark skills was a yang bo jump, which is a jump to oversplit with your back arched all the way to where your head almost touches your calf. It's a super difficult skill as it requires insane flexibility. The joke here is that shawn did a switch leap to ring position, which has a similar (yet less difficult) shape to the yang bo jump, and does not do it very well.
