I live in Canada and bought a M1 Garand from someone here and it happens to be one from the CMP, very nice rifle and it shoots great. It now one of my favorite military surplus rifles. Great video.
I'd say it's not THAT complicated, but I just spent six minutes talking about how to do it properly. I know that a lot of people won't even try to go through CMP, and that's very dissapointing. I saw another TH-camr list off milsurps to stay away from, and he listed the Garand as #1, because they're crazy expensive and the CMP is too difficult to buy from. It probably took me an hour or two to get everything in order for me, and it makes it easily $500 less than going on the open market. I just want more people to consider the CMP and realize that it's a really great option.

Lead times have increased considerably since this was posted. I ordered my first Garand in November 2019 and it arrived in two and a half weeks. In 2021 however, I mailed an order the last week of January and it was late April before I got the email acknowledging the order and assigning it a number. If I’m lucky the rifle may get here before the end of this month.

@@FPIU_Garand44 I should explain that I had ordered a field grade rifle with a Winchester receiver. They are not as numerous as Springfield Armory rifles by far and my order was on back order while the armorers worked their way through inventory. When I inquired they offered me the chance to get a service grade Winchester for $100.00 more which I jumped on, otherwise I might still be waiting. It turned out the receiver and hammer were Winchester, the bolt is HRA and the barrel most other parts are Springfield. In fact my January 1944 receiver is mated to a 1955 barrel, which disappointed me some, however the bore/throat readings are 0+/0+ so I’m happy in the end.
Just wanted some clarification. You need proof of current membership in a CMP affiliated organization and proof of participation in a marksmanship or other firearm related activity? Appreciate the video.
There’s a number of options. Score from any shooting competition is one. Any license (carry, owners, hunting) that includes live fire. They’ll take most any training certification if it has live fire. They have a form that you can have the RSO at a shooting range fill out saying that you understand the basics of shooting a firearm. They also take military and police service. Pretty much anything that shows that you can competently shoot a gun. Not necessarily that you’re good, just that you’re dangerous to others at the range.
They're down to just M1 Garands at this point. They ran out of M1 Carbines, 1903's, and 1917's long ago. They occasionally pick one up, but it goes to auction and gets pricey. They got a batch of 1911's last year, and could get more of those again. But it's just Garands at the moment
I often wonder what the next batch of military surplus firearms from the CMP would be ? Other than M1 Garands, they can’t sell M14’s or any M16’s... I’m thinking maybe the M9? No more surplus ammo.. I think the last surplus ammo was the Greek surplus 30-06 from about ten years ago...
I think we, unfortunately, may be approaching the end of days for surplus rifles. They can't sell any of the m14's or m16's/m4's. I could see M9 pistols showing up. But that may be about it.
@@dotwill Unfortunately, the idiots at the ATF will not allow machine guns to be converted to semi-automatic. "Once a machine gun, always a machine gun". I would love to get my hands on a M14, but alas, I will have to get a Springfield Armory (inc.) M1A.

It really varies a lot. Sometimes it can be longer than others. It can differ from one grade to another. Generally it’s some time from a couple weeks to a couple of months. You won’t hear anything from them until slightly before it ships. You can look at the forums on thecmp.org and get an idea of how it looks at the moment.
What if you have an FFL 03 but survive in the tyrannical people's republic of nj? Does having an FFL 03 count towards "Proper paperwork"? Will it help?
J, The C&R license will count as your marksmanship requirement. You can only ship to a “NJ state licensed dealer”, and that’s a separate thing than a FFL 03. It may still have to ship to a dealer. That’s my understanding, at least. CMP could probably give you a more definitive answer.

They could sell semi-auto conversions of M14s and M16s. It’d be a bit more work for the CMP.
