  • I go over the different grades for M1 rifles from the CMP. I'll tell you a bit about the different manufacturers and how that comes into play on the CMP Garands. I'll also give you explanations of the different rifles they have for sale, and give some pros and cons.

    I ordered and received a rack grade from the CMP in 2023.
    I filled out my paperwork and included a nice note outlining that I am a WW2 collector and re-enactor, and politely requested they send me a WW2 era Springfield because I had heard prior they sometimes honored smaller included requests.
    The rack grade I received was an October of ‘43 Springfield receiver, with a wartime trigger guard, some mixed Winchester and IHC parts, as well as a rebarrel from Springfield in ‘51.
    The rifle came with a replacement (likely when it was rebarreled for Korea in the early 50’s) nearly red Walnut stock.
    For my individual rifle’s history as a collector and historian, I love it to death, Frankenstein or not. Just understanding the amount of hands this rifle has been in, as well as the places (and battlefields) around the world it has seen, puts me in awe every time I look at it.
    Gave myself Garand thumb the first week I got it.. I wasn’t using the correct karate chop hand position and she bit my index, causing some bleeding.
    I chuckled and wondered who else this old girl might’ve bit in her time

    I went to the North Store yesterday and picked up a beautiful Service Grade 1943 Springfield Armory. Going and actually picking the rifle I wanted was a treat. The workers there field stripped it for me and we went through all the parts which were stamped SA. Only thing not from SA is the stock which is new wood from the CMP which I like. Very happy with my purchase.

    I got a service grade a couple of years ago, its a good shooter and in pretty good condition. A Garand means a little bit more to me, I went to a military school for 3 yrs and was issued a M1 Garand, we carried them a lot, cared for and cleaned a lot, and shot a little bit, but there is that nostalgia factor for the model of rifle I was issued almost 60 years ago.

    It’s the truth what you said about just keeping the guns running. I was the Armor for my army company and I once had to use a 10 penny nail on the latch cover of a Browning .30 caliber machine gun to keep it running in the field making my company the only one with a working machine gun.

    Just got my CMP rack grade yesterday, it's beautiful. Stock has some minor dents and dings, and there is some lite pitting by the edges of the receiver. Barrel is pristine! I've had multiple M1 owners looks it over and say it's the best rack grade they have ever seen

    Bought my service grade M1 a few years back. Came with a new stock and bore/chamber numbers were almost new. It’s my 2nd M1, very pleased and it’s a shooter. Participated in a NRA F Class match, six of us used iron sighted firearms, I shot a 268/400. Didn’t place and no bragging rights but I was extremely pleased.

    I got my M1 Garand rack grade a few months ago and love it. Is it prefect....no, but that's what I wanted. It has a 1945 SA receiver, but the barrel shows it was rebuilt in 1955. I wanted a military war relic that looked like it went through a war. I am very happy. Your video... great information....Thanks.

    A little late to the conversation, but I got my first CMP Garand around 2000, a SA, 1.81 million built in August '43 and I paid $400. Except for the hammer which is WRA it's all SA and a beautiful rifle.
    I got my second CMP Garand around in 2013, a "Collector Grade" H&R built Nov. '54 and 5.51 million and everything is fricking original H&R except for the CMP walnut stock that I refinished... it's absolutely gorgeous. Paid $975 delivered and my local Gunshop, run by an 'old' retired USMC armorer, looked at the rifle and stated that it probably had two rounds ever fired through it as it was that original and tight. If you thought Expert Grade was nice, you should see Collector Grade.

      This video is about the grades used by CMP for the Garands that they sell. The main purpose of those is to give the buyers an expectation of its condition, and the price is based off of that. If yours didn't come from CMP, then a CMP grade is pretty much irrelevant.

    There are exceptions. I have a rack grade that looks and shoots like an almost new gun. According to a letter from the cmp it was sold as a rack grade in 2005. It was a “Greek return” rifle. HRA made it in ‘54. The TE and ME gauge shows that the original barrel is as new, 1 and .5, respectively. All marked component parts are hra. All parts are correct for the rifle including the stock. Needless to say this perplexed me at first but apparently it was common with a lot of the Greek returned rifles.

    Mine is all parts matching IHC with the LMR barrel marked for 1954. I don't believe the stock is correct though. It was imported into Canada in 1974 and the original owner paid $20 extra back then for a select grade. I'm the second owner and the rifle basically sat behind the door of the original owner's farm house. Very low round count on this rifle and the metal is almost pristine. Like I said all parts are confirmed IHC. I'm curious what it's worth on today's market, even though I'd never sell it.

    • @PoindexterTactical
      @PoindexterTactical  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think the pricing from CMP is pretty fair. It's well below gun show and local gun store pricing. It ends up being right around the mid range AR-15 prices. They'd very likely be north of $2k if you were producing them new. But I know that $650 to $1200 is not easy for everyone to drop. As far as who benefits, it's the CMP that benefits. It was originally a government agency, and instead of giving them money, congress decided to give them the old surplus rifles. The sales are how they fund themselves. They're technically private now, but they're still kind of like a government agency.

    I recently picked up a 1942 MOD M1 Garand, Springfield armory #957300. has lock-bar sight and milled trigger guard. SA barrel 2-55. stock with only 2 cartouches, looks well aged. heavy stamped P on the pistol grip, and a circle P below that, but very faint. has a single stamped "M" on the gas cylinder lock, and the cylinder it's self has a diagonal tightening cut. the rest are generic looking Dxxxx numbers on all parts. op-rod is Springfield, is not the un-cut type.
    what grade is this? bore looks immaculate. bolt and barrel have the same finish, leads me to believe that they were swapped at the same time.

    I have an hra that was sold as a rack grade in 2005. It is a 5.6 million gun and was a Greek return. The thing about it is that it looks basically new aside from a few stock dings. The bore on it is an appropriate 1955 barrel and specs less than 1, about 1/2 two 2/3 of the first gauge mark and the throat is similar, maybe 0. All of its parts are likewise appropriate. No hints of pitting. I don’t understand how it was rack grade. I did run into some mentions that many nice Greek returns were listed as rack at that time because they had so many. But I am unsure. A conundrum…

      They don’t come around very often. You don’t ever have true matching, as the only thing serialized is the receiver. You could have the receiver and every part from the same manufacturer and year. If CMP gets something like that it goes to auction. The ones that CMP gets at this point have been around so long that they’ve likely been rebuilt and switched out many times.

    "The bores on the field grades are not going to be good" Not so. I bought two field grades and the barrels gauged 1+ and 1+ on one and 1+ and 3+ on the other. Both shoot very well.

    • @PoindexterTactical
      @PoindexterTactical  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      May be better to say that the bores on field grades will not necessarily be good. They don’t guarantee that the bores will gauge that well on all of them.

      There are still selling. You’ll have to go to their website to see specifically what models they have.

    Stupid question for you lot. Can you request one with a WW2 receiver? Or is it just kinda luck of the draw? I know in the grand scheme of things it's not that important but I like the history.

    • @PoindexterTactical
      @PoindexterTactical  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can put a sticky on it and request something in particular. If the guy picking yours is in a good mood and there’s a ww2 receiver in the stack, you might get lucky. It’s no guarantee, but it doesn’t hurt.
