Need to pay my truck off first but I am putting money aside as well. The last time I rode was 44 years ago. Wow, I've been riding since 1974 and I just learned plenty from watching this instructional video. I retired from the Army in September 2017 and was diagnosed with stage four cancer just one month after retiring. My deployments up until my retirement and my treatments for cancer following retirement has basically kept me off of a bike for several long years. I am now however cancer-free after 4 years of brutal treatment and I'm back on my Harley and I'm starting to enjoy my retirement, finally. I'm not going to call this a refresher course I'm going to call this excellent information and knowledge for any Rider no matter what experience they have. Thanks for what you do, I've truly learned more today as one should always do to keep their head on a swivel, literally.

I didn't even finish watching this video yet...but he's already proven to me that he is not only extremely knowledgeable and skilled but most importantly, he's an amazing instructor who is still seeing it and explains things from the other rider's perspective perfectly. I'm 55 and have been riding for 30 yrs. I'm an Ok rider who is looking to improve his slow maneuvering skills on a Road Glide. His explanations are detailed and describe the order of events perfectly, with just enough emphasis on the key points. Great Job!

This is golden advice ! So glad I found you. I am a re-entry rider and boy do I feel like a newbie. I haven't ridden a bike let alone a bicycle in over 20 years, so the first three days were admittedly embarrassingly terrifying. I was wobbly and shaking, but when I followed an old school Harley rider and followed his movements it started coming back to me. I went out today and there was a ton of road construction going on, so I got good stop and go, slow and go riding in. Turning slowly is my biggest obstacle today. Oh, and I hardly use my rear brake, so I need to, I see.

ROBERT! I went back to watch this today 12/19/21. LOVE IT. I went out and practiced u-turns for an hour (of course in the process i go through Exercises 1 and 2). After 30 minutes I thought I should get a tape measure and understand the lengths I was working on. I can definitely do the 27 foot day in and day out (keep it loaded, cover the brake, keep throttle where it is, head and eyes, handlebars) BUT TODAY I REALIZED I HAD BEEN PRACTICING IN A STREET ITSELF CURB TO CURB WAS 27 FEET. GREAT. So I laid out a tape measure at 16 feet and then went around left and left then a u turn then rights and rights and each time kept my wheel just outside that 16 ft tape. OUTSTANDING. I felt for the first time I really understand the POTENTIAL of being the boss of my motorcycle. WOW the confidence. I wasn't leaning the bike. I WAS NOT LEANING THE BIKE. No need to do that. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Thanks again.

"The leaning of the motorcycle and the fear" You nailed it with this video. I finally can confidently perform a U-turn because of you and this video. I spent time on and off practicing Paladino's videos and could never get it. I even reached out to him and he suggested I be in 2nd gear when performing his routine. But I was confused, no one starts in 2nd gear from a complete stop especially at a traffic light when attempting a U-turn. Also I could never get the whole "feather the clutch". I dropped my bike many times because I was riding to fast with his method. I love how you called out "its not necessary to make a U-turn within 18 ft. and not necessary to lean". I actually searched You tube "how to execute a U-turn without leaning" and this video came up. I first practiced the slow crawl , exercise #2; then continued with slightly turning the wheel, then I jumped into slowly performing the U-turn (while dragging the brake). Got it within 5 minutes! As you stated, just focus on the rear brake. Stayed within friction zone and preload/keep throttle loaded while dragging the brake. I got sharper turns the more I applied more rear brake. So freakin' easier with your method, so awesome. Wish I found this video while back. I actually only watched your videos about your Motorcycle Jack. Those were the only ones I watched (start to finish). I'm firm a believer now with the preload/friction zone/and dragging the brake. That worked perfect for me. Was like a dream, not having the fear of the bike falling over. Thank you so much

Off the physics of a motorcycle utilizing your back break makes sense at points as I was taught when I was riding to only use 10% of the back break, but the front brake is going to want to make you fall if you're over utilizing it in a turn, makes so much sense. Thank you.

First of all I want to thank you so much for your lessons. I've been riding motorbikes for around 14 years (between long times off, a few times on, etc), but NEVER could manage to learn these low speed u-turns, I had so much fear that I can't describe, and felt ashamed of not being able to do so! But after watching your videos (specially this one!) I decided to take my bike an go for a practice yesterday, 17/Nov/2024. I swear for God that I thougt I would need a lot of practice sessions to be able to do that, but I kept so much inside my head the steps you taught that after around 5 (YES! FIVE!) minutes I was doing low speed u-turns using the preload, rear break a little counter-balance... Jesus! I am so happy that I had to come back here and show you my gratitude, man! Thank you so much, your patience teaching, your positivity and good humor are rare to find. God bless you today and forever! Regards from Brazil.

I found you on TH-cam when you were new at it and you didn't even have a microphone, it was hard to hear you sometimes, but I've stuck with it and now I ride my bagger with confidence. Thanks for debunking the common - and contradictory - myths about leaning -YES and leaning -No. You’ve explained that 5 (as I see it) variables are at play: throttle, rear brake, speed, leaning (bike and/or body) and circle radius; it’s up to me - in learning and practising - to play with these 5 and find my own ‘balance’. Especially helpful are the four steps in building up the tight turn/U-turn routine and overcoming fear. Step by step.

I just spent 42K, with extras, on a new Indian bike that is over 1000lbs. Not ridden in 20 years and even back then never had a bike this heavy. I was terrified to ride it. Almost dumped it in the dealer parking lot so refused to drive it home. I just lacked the confidence. My motor cop buddies from the patrol told me to just go out in a parking lot and practice the basics and take a class. That's my plan but still afraid. Bike is being delivered sometime this week. After seeing this video I am FAR less afraid to get on it and practice. Still worried about damaging the bike if it falls so I may purchase some police bars that go around the bags but will see. Well done. This is so helpful. I can not thank you enough. If you collect patches I would be happy to send one. ;-)

I really appreciated your comments about duck walking. Unlike the other retired police officer videos who makes you feel like your an idiot if you duck walk, your view is realistic and spot on. I try to avoid as much as possible but from time to time I find myself in a situation when I just feel I have to. UT the approach here can reduce those times even further. I have always felt 27 feet u turns was enough. Those other videos seem to stress 18 and if you can't do 18 then you shouldn't be riding. The feeling I get from them. Not yours though. You truly are a blessing to the motorcycle world. I am happy to join!!!

These kinds of videos have been extremely helpful…. As a kid, I grew up on dirt bikes, I had an enduro, trail bikes, 3 wheelers and all that is a great base for knowing how to shift and use the clutch…. But those are smaller bikes.. if you make a mistake , you can usually compensate with strength… and you’ll be ok.. but it allows you to learn bad habits or at least less likely to stick to the actual proper techniques…
Once you get on a heavy bike, that all changes..

Finally someone talking REAL LIFE stuff ... There's so much youtubers / bike vlogers that are constantly telling people the have to lean, make tight turns and all that stuff. They even kinda blame people for having fear and some even encurage people to things they are not comfortable with and eventually force them into crashing.
I'm not saying that you never ever should consider learning to make tight turns or that it doesn't help you not BUT you should not take a risk that's not necessary, especially as a beginner or someone who's riding for quite some time but without ever trying to do such things You need to start slow and work on your skills until you feel confident, if you go step by step your confidence will build up and you'll eventually reach the next level automatically.
When I made my bike licence about 23 years ago, nobody was even talking about making tight turns or stuff like that. You need to turn around? Fine, stop somwhere you have enough room and do it however you feel comfortable. You usually won't have to u-turn in the middle of traffic so there's no need to do it fast or tight.
What you need to learn is how to lturn left/right from a stand still if you want to turn at any intersection, that's a requiered skill for sure but even there is NO NEED to do it super tight or super fast. Just stay in your skill zone and you will be safe!

Good morning Lt. from the Philippines. It's difficult for me to find a parking lot to practice, so everyday I go out into the real world and practice on a small street but most of the time I actually use all the practice session on ALL of your highly motivated videos. The one skill I use is the Slow Ride in traffic that is very crowded with no stop signs or stop lights. Again I can hear you in my head when I am out here in some of most crowded streets in all of Philippines. I truly thank you for that. I was pissed the other day when I grabbed the front brake then I realized I pressed the rear brake the same time for a control stop to keep from hitting the car in front of me. I said to myself damn I almost had to do sit-ups lmao. In addition, last July when I got my first big bike I felt like my motorcycle was my pimp, lmao But as of yesterday I am the mack of motorcycle and I thank you. I kind of show of when I am making u-turns in front of so many other bikers watching me..... I sometimes say aloud I wish Robert can see me now. I download your videos on my phone so I can use them to practice when I am outside. Thanks for all you do and stay blessed my brother.

I'm at it again, I rode the Sportster for a few months. I'm 6'2" so I moved up to a 97 soft tail heritage custom. Much more comfortable and better riding bike. I'm back to my practice lot getting a feel for the weight and turning of the bike. Takes a little getting used to. I always come back here and just watch you guys, and listen to what you are trying to convey with these teaching videos. I wish I was close so I could come and take your classes but I'll have to settle for the next best thing. Robert thank you for sharing what you do man. Big Salute from an old salty marine.!

    Hey Robert
I just want to say thank you. I have been riding 51 years. The Heritage softail was the largest bike I had as a keeper. Recently I started thing about traveling nationwide. I bought a CVO and it was a different animal. I dropped that bike 3 times in less thank 24 hours. A buyer popped off and we traded the same day. Later I realized I could have lowered the bike, worn an agressive boot that that grip the ground much better than the slip on comfortable shoes I was wearing.
By watching your videos, I realized that I knew what you were teaching and I had used it that technique. I had gotten relaxed and spent NO time riding compared what I had done in the past. So thank you for the clear explanation and the mechanical reasoning behind to preload the bike and follow thru. No changing your mind midway. This 2016 Street glide Special is a different animal. Soon, I will be taking a long cross country trip. I just need someone to remind me. Thank You brother!
I appreciate what you are doing.
I am getting set up with a PleasureWay class b motorhome and a small enclosed trailer. 20 years ago, I was enjoying Colorado. Last few weeks, I was at Sturgis SD and I had no problem. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. these 8-900lb bikes are not the same as trail riding or racing motocross. You are one the first (one I guess) that reminded me of HOW TO RIDE your bike..A stroke in 2009 didn't improve my balance either. But I am looking forward to see for a place to park and get back to camp and be ready to roll, the next day.
    Cheers

Robert, In my quest to be skilled and confident with u-turns and low speed maneuvers, I came across this video. I'm committed to mastering the small u-turns, but now understand that leaning is not absolutely necessary to make reliable u-turns in real-world situations. Your comment around 22:14 "speed makes me _have_ to lean" was an eye-opener. And your example about making a u-turn toward an object such as a curb, car, or wall using a controlled, slower speed u-turn rather than a potentially riskier, leaning u-turn requiring speed is really an important point to consider. Awesome content backed up with great visuals. Thanks!!!
