  • Some love them - a lot of people dislike them. The "howling" vocals in Black Metal. Especially bands that feature Grim as their singer are pretty famous for this vocal style, Aaskereia and Brocken Moon.

Hei, Farvann! Just by watching you trying to show how you do your vocals, there are a few things to note:
    1. You DO use your diaphragm, since you are trying to fill up on air. You just don't pay attention to your body's reaction when you do it. Try video recording yourself or in front of a mirror.
    2. Howling is a clean type singing, similar to falsetto, so you open your throat. The one thing you don't do, and props for this, is you don't go full-on from the get-go. This is why your notes sound constant and clean.
    3. Constant higher volume on stage means you need more air in your lungs to reach for the note/notes you need, thus raising the risk of attrition and fatigue. If you play higher notes, it might mean higher efforts, so constant (smart) practice will work. Depends on what you really want to achieve, really.
I try using clean singing tips with my black metal vocals and I get clearer throat, thus more air circulating, more stamina, better diction, and overall, better focus. Now, I get black metal screams for at least 20 seconds like nothing, even without warming up. Had to record a song for a video with such a scream and it took like 3 hours of takes and the only negative was I was sick of the song. Sounds cocky, but everybody can do it, actually. Just be sober, rested, not shortly after a meal, and don't let anxiety fuck with your mind. And practice, record yourself, and analyze your singing as often as you can. \m/

In the last few days I'm finishing recording my first black metal song and what I've been working on lately is the voice. The "s" thing and the "uhhhh" after a tiring day are things that I do too and I checked those things are quite recommended. Personally I consider, at least for me, this video as an excellent comparison between those who, like you and me, are totally self taught. The howling seems really cool, I was aiming to something more like Dagon or finnish style.
Regarding the muscles thing in the throat I think they are muscles that you don't know exist if you don't sing, but I think someone more experienced than us in the comments can give us safer and truer information.
I really enjoyed the video :) It's like when the cool friend who does what you would like to do too gives you some little explanation on how he does certain things xD

that woo warning thing is good. if you cant woo, that is because your vocal chords have become inflamed from contact, this contact when sustained will rub through the mucus that is naturally present and this direct friction between the vocal chords is what causes the swelling and loss of voice. The common goal of safe extreme vocals is primarily to find ways to imitate the sound of screeching while reducing the actual contact of the vocal anatomy. this is a good thing to keep in mind when doing vocals, just to feel your voice and try to make the sounds you want with as little air, and as little sensation in the vocal anatomy as you can while still getting the results you want

As a vocalist I can say, that your approach sounds quite reasonable to me. The only thing I wouldn't do is trying all this while sitting down. I know that you need your car as a recording space and stuff. Still the stabilizing effect of your core muscles (stomach, back, etc.) will be more effective and you can and should even support them from your legs up through your hips into your lower core. So: if you can, sing (or whatever you do with your voice) standing up.

@@Farvann I would say that it's probably worth the ride, you can get way more support for your voice. Also there are plenty of great warm up routines on TH-cam to really get your voice going and unlock more of your register just by loosening up your throat and let your core do all the heavy lifting. Maybe that can push your vocals to the next level.

Every Vocal Style can be raspy or Howling, To me, it's just surreal I'm still trying Hard I can Growl More than I can Scream so does it make it less structured, maybe yes, maybe no I actually don't do Screaming a lot cause I suck at it but at least for me I tried💀🤘.

if you are just starting singing try not to go balls deep on something ultra brutal , try going with things like dimmu for getting the basics.
always try to warm your throath with something like tea but never drink something cold, it will hurt and fuck your voice up
then when you sing try to use the force from your gut, not from your throath , it has to be from within and from below, you will feel it, dont scream like a madman or youll make your throath bleed, finally singing takes time to practice because its a muscle and you have to exercise like all things to get good.

Yeah it's correct to avoid loud singing when using harsh vocals, but that particular style (I call it the meshuggah parody voice(y'know the ooh ah ah ah combined with Merduk lyrics)) needs a certain loudness to work.
Here's a question though, are you even trve if you never heard of Merduk or Apricots?
