Makes me think of all the poor orangutan mothers who get their baby stolen in the wild animal pet trade, how horrifying it must be though usually the mother is murdered.

They weren't really separated. She could see and touch him whenever she wanted! Here's more info: www.memphiszoo.org/blog/posts/endangered-sumatran-orangutan-born-at-the-memphis-zoo-

@@madisonmorris7810I don’t think that’s completely accurate. The link doesn’t work now but when staff are caring for an infant they have to do so 24/7. They can place them with trusted members of their species for certain brief periods or longer if there’s a gate or window separating baby and human from the other animal(s.) But they wouldn’t be able to allow the orangutan “anytime “ access to the baby because they’d also have access to the human which would be against safety policies. I’m guessing the mom could go near enough to where he was being cared for to see him anytime and maybe stick her hands or fingers through a gate but even that might well be too risky in case the mom accidentally harmed the baby in her desperation to hold him close or something along those lines. I definitely don’t think she could actually hold her baby while under staff care until the day the events captured on video happened. It’s understandable how much more it means to be able to hold someone in your arms versus only being able to stroke a cheek with your finger or something like that.

We need corporations to take sustainable palm oil very seriously then. It's not up to god, it's up to us. Read ingredients on your food. Learn the ways 'palm oil' is hidden in ingredient labels. Learn about the industry as well as sustainable palm oil options... divest from companies like Kelloggs, Nestle, Ikea, PepsiCo and makeup companies that are repeat offenders of rainforest deforestation and not upholding their promises on sustainable palm oil. This means leaving behind many of our favourite processed foods or bodycare products. We need to make the choice... they are disappearing at an alarming rate.

@@zolawilliams1 That's what I do. But so many products contain palm oil that I feel it's a lost battle since most people don't pay attention to ingredients to avoid for humanitarian reasons.

Briditte Bargeot ...I was thinking the same thing, in a few cases that I can think of. But I'm pretty sure they keep them separated so long, waiting for the mom to recover. They may even keep mom sedated for quite awhile so she doesn't pick at the stitches ...or actually, she might start frantically looking for the baby. ( I'll have to look that up..lol )...but Orangutans understand pregnancy more than any animal that I've heard of.

Exactly, as intelligent as these animals may be it's still risky to put them through serious surgery since you can't communicate with them how to respond to everything. It's a much longer recovery process for animals than it is humans.

There's a really strong possibility that she could have rejected it, just because she didn't give birth to it and didn't have those first few crucial hours cleaning, nursing and bonding. She could have very easily looked at it with indiference and never even known it was hers.
I forget where, but it was at one of those sanctuaries, a mother and very small child had been separated for just a few days because one of them was sick and the mother was unable to care for it. After just a few days, when they returned the baby to her, she flat out rejected it, wouldn't allow it to nurse, then she dried up. They were kind of new to the sanctuary and were in the intake quarantine cages, and when they went in the last time to take the baby out because it was obvious that the mother had no interest in taking care if it, she was completely indifferent about it. It wasn't a newborn, but definitely an infant that she gave birth to in the wild, and was taking care of it the best she could before they were brought in. They already had that bonding phase however many weeks or months it was beforehand and she wanted nothing to do with it. She didn't even pick it up or anything. Glad this one worked out, because it could have easily gone the other way.

Maybe this orangutan mother had had a baby before and was more experienced. That other mother could be young and unsure about her role. Or maybe it's just different personalities or intelligence. This mother sounds very smart, thst she still could have a connection even after a c section and after not having met her baby.
