  • An unexpected arrival comes to Chester Zoo in the form of a baby orangutan. As some of the orangutan family's younger members struggle to cope, keepers must find a way to help them adjust to the new arrival!
    From Secret Life of the Zoo Season 1 Episode 6, "Black Rhinos": In Chester Zoo, which is a home to ten critically endangered black rhinos, female rhino Kitani is introduced to her new mate Magadi, but with injury a high risk during mating, keeper Babs is concerned that Kitani may struggle to defend herself. Meanwhile, there's a shocking arrival to the orangutan family when a new baby arrives - despite keepers not knowing the mother was pregnant...

      @@teacoon6399 The mother may have felt secure, but this is still a major disruption to Tuti's natural life cycle. Orangutans are supposed to have their mothers' full attention for the first seven years or so. There's still a lot of development she's supposed to undergo while being closely supervised by her mother, and the premature arrival of a sibling might throw off that timetable quite badly.

And enough care that they were able to reproduce without much notice. Many primates are kept as pets or solely as money-making opportunities for people, and others are killed for bush meat. These guys are lucky. Unless we plan to return land to them and curb our desire for using animals for our entertainment, orangs will only exist in zoos and private sanctuaries in the near future. Is it better to let them go extinct now, or should we keep them around in hopes we’ll get our act together in the future and we will be better stewards of the earth? I don’t know.

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree. After watching a lot of videos from BOS, I can't understand why this zoo's vet is so clueless. He didn't even know the mother orangutan was pregnant so that is very telling--no regular physical check ups. So no one noticed if the mother had a bulging belly, even a small one?

    • @Cara-39
      @Cara-39 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@whatevergoesforme5129 It's possible the vets didn't know she was pregnant, especially if this zoo has a hands off policy with the animals, something that many do. That said, one of the first signs of pregnancy in orangutans is a swollen vulva, something I would expect the keepers to notice as they work with the orangutans on a daily basis but I don't know how much close up interaction there is. What surprised me the most, however, is the very short amount of time between births. I know captive orangutans don't need 8 yrs to teach their babies how to live in the wild but babies aren't fully weaned until around 5 yrs old so this mother is probably nursing both. It's just a surprising situation to me.

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Cara-39 For me, I wonder why they are surprised when an adult male orangutan is in the enclosure with them. In the wild, this would not happen. One commenter reacted to my term "rape " LOL and said orangutans have sex for fun like the bonobos but I doubt this was for fun. I may be wrong and the adult female was receptive but she still has a toddler to nurse. And the male orangutan can easily overpower her if he wants to so it can be forced sex. But all of these are speculations anyway since I am using how orangutans behave in the wild as my point of reference. However, I just believe and it is my opinion that the vets of this zoo have been incompetent. So poor mother and poor toddler. It is unnatural for orangutan to nurse and raise two at the same time.

    You would think in a Zoo they would test the urine more. One of the main things in my mind that makes having these guys in a zoo is keeping them safe and looking after their health. Letting her go 9 months with out knowing is just wrong. A human mother needs to be watch by a Dr. as she is carrying a baby for 9 months just like an Orangutan. If they are mating you should be checking just in case. I know in the wild Orangutans just roll with what happens but in a Zoo their life is in the keepers hands from Keeping them happy too making sure they are safe and looked after a lot can go wrong during a pregnancy and if your going to take care of them then by all means do it right.

      Zoos and marine “worlds” need to go. It’s purely for greed and never in the best interest of the animals they abuse, even if they insist they’re not. We are 97% the same genetic makeup as orangutans. How would you like to live in a cage or enclosure your entire life and maybe even have to put on a show for people? It’s cruelty and it has to go.

    It's great that she feels safe enough to have another kid, but the idea that the first baby has to 'grow up quicker' sound more like they don't want to think about the mental impact neglect can have, its too that she wasn't fully pushed away but the zookeepers idea of 'growing up' i.e neglect could have seriously caused problems if the mum hadn't been attentive.

      Which is not the norm so that poor toddler is undergoing something that is unnatural just like her mother. Can't understand why the zoo vets didn't even know the mother was pregnant so I guess they don't do regular physical check ups. Plus, what do they expect when the orangutans are in captivity so the grown male could have his way with the adult female when he wants to, unfortunately.

    • @grifter84
      @grifter84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@whatevergoesforme5129 The zookeepers probably assumed there was no way she'd get pregnant again so quickly. Obviously a mistake. Hopefully more zoos will start putting their females on birth control to prevent non-ideal outcomes like this.

    • @cpujol9420

      @@grifter84 yes, too bad she was allowed to have another one so soon. They should have anticipated if it was physically possible that it could happen. The mom certainly didn't need the added stress on her body and of course not fair for the first baby either. The females need to be on birth control unless are planning to breed them. I guess they learned their lesson at the expense of mom and the babies!

    Why didn’t the zoo give her a hormonal implant? That’s really unfair to her first baby-in nature she would have her mom’s full attention for 9 years at least. She’s not a human, this isn’t just sibling rivalry or jealousy. Really irresponsible of the zoo.
