Turns out a few people from Sonic Team went to Nintendo and worked on Mario Odyssey. But it seems it was mostly just environment artists and such. No one that would be in a position to make the creative decisions of what the game is going to be. So while it is possible that there is a direct connection between Unleashed and Odyssey, we can't really say for sure.
Also, Antz vs. Bug's Life was not the best example to use in regards to coincidences. Antz being similar to Bug's Life was actually not all that coincidental. Jeffrey Katzenberg defected from Pixar to DreamWorks, essentially stole John Lassiter's idea for a movie about bugs, and then went out of his way to make sure his movie came out first. A more apt example would've been something like, say, Pokémon and Digimon, two franchises that debuted around the same time where the similarities between the two were, for the most part, coincidences. Both were just pulling from the same inspiration (Ultraman's capsule kaiju), but Pokémon combined that concept with bug collecting whereas Digimon combined it with Tamagotchi.

Also that kind of would have ruined the affect Generations had as just pulling from previous places is the entire identity of Gens. which only came out 3 years later.
I’d like to point out on Sonic’s side that Eggmanland, while not from any previous games, was a concept built up in previous games by Eggman’s desire for this utopia to be created in his image, and I saw Eggmanland as that vision coming true. Kirby and the forgotten land also has some similarities with Sonic Frontiers. -return of a franchise after a rather sizable gap in games after the reception of their prior major releases (Kirby Star Allies was regarded as a more middling Kirby game when compared to its predecessors (Triple Deluxe & Planet Robobot) while Sonic Forces was thought of as a complete step back from its predecessors of the same gameplay style (Generations & Unleashed) mechanics) despite those releases promising a lot. -both games start with our main protagonists going about their days regularly before getting stuck in (technically) another world (since Sonic starts the game in cyberspace before getting out) -both games kinda center themselves around our main four protagonists (Kirby, Bandana Waddle Dee, Meta Knight, and King Dedede in KatFL's case and Sonic, Amy, Knuckles, and Tails in Frontiers case) as well as a new character who is used to this sort of place (Elfillin and Sage) and a recurring Antagonist (Eggman (of course) and Morpho Knight). -both games take place in an area that was used and (implied to be) abandoned by a group of Ancients. -both games have us fight against a new enemy force (the Beast Pack and the Starfall Island Defense System) as well as their leaders/figureheads (Gorimondo, Sillydillo, and Clawroline in KatFL's case and Giganto, Wyvern, and the Knight in Frontiers case) with it being revealed that their leaders (Leongar and Supreme) were actively being controlled by the true threat of the game (Fecto Forgo and The End), with it being revealed that both groups used to be nonviolent before said threat corrupted their leader. -the protagonists of the story both inadvertently allow the main badguy to obtain their true form (with Kirby accidently leading Elfillin to Fecto Forgo, while trying to save him from his captors, and Sonic unleashing the cyber corruption hidden within the towers, while trying to save his friends). -both main antagonists were captured and sealed by the ancients that they attempted to destroy. -Both games "end" with a quick time event where the protagonist and the new character of the game, while utilizing a large weaponised mechanical object (Kirby and Elfillin using a truck, Super Sonic and Sage using Suprems), ram into and "destroy" the main antagonist. -both games end with the "sacrifice" of the new character, where they talk about how much they loved going on this adventure and living life (Elfillin expending all of his energy ro close the portal and Sage using her power and Supremes body to shield Sonic from The Ends explosion), but then later it turns out their just fine (Elfillin getting nursed back to health by Clawroline/Cleo and Sage getting reuploaded by Eggman). -both games have an extra mode where the protagonists go to another dimension/universe/what if world, through a portal that is reminiscent of their series main symbols (Rings and Stars), in order to battle the main antagonist again (Forgo Dreams/Parallel cup Z and the Final Horizons DLC) in a new form (Soul Forgo/Chaos Elfillis and The End (tethered)). -both extra modes have to protagonist fight harder versions of the bosses they already fought (the Forgo versions of the beast pack/Parallel cup Z in general and the Master Trial Titan boss rush). -both protagonists do this in order to save another character (Leongar and Elfillis (technically) and the Titans and Sage (technically)). They also end up fighting a stronger version of the pre final boss (Forgo Leon and Supreme (tethered)) -both protagonists gain control over a new, overpowered, version of a previous form (Morpho Sword and Cyber Super Sonic) before fighting the final boss. It's weird just how many similarities these two games have, and apparently Mario & Luigi Brothership may end up being similar to them as well, from what I've seen (but I haven't played the game yet and am avoiding spoilers). Sorry for the long comment reply.
Most of the plot elements and general feel also applies to Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario, I actually kinda laughed when I first played Mario Galaxy because the opening gameplay setpiece is pretty much the same from Paper Mario, saying that Mario Odyssey and Sonic Unleashed are uncannily similar in vibes needs to include how those games vibes are similar to what Mario already did before a couple decades ago, and even then Mario or Sonic probably didn't do this first, there's probably a game or movie or series that did this before them and they took inspiration from that
Technically Mario has had something like that since 64 with the Koopa Shell, or Sunshine with the Turbo Nozzle which was definitely the main inspiration for that power-up in Odyssey (though technically the turbo nozzle didn't actually make you _run_ on the water), or Mini Mario in NSMB, or heck even the ice flower in Galaxy technically did a similar kind of thing, and then post-Unleashed there was Dash Yoshi in Mario Galaxy 2 which let you run on water, so that's not any new Unleashed similarity for Mario unique to Odyssey.
This video deserves a million views. I too have noticed many similarities between this and Sonic Unleashed. One thing you forgot to point out is how the cafe jukebox at New Donk City sounds almost identical to Professor Pickle's lab.
Don’t forget that Mario’s first game was Donkey Kong, which took place in New York. And Mario was originally a carpenter saving his girlfriend, Pauline, from being kidnapped by Donkey Kong at a NYC construction site. SMO’s New Donk City and Mayor Pauline are direct references to the 1981 arcade.
i saw the title and thought "oh no phariah finally snapped" and now I'm trying to convince myself that mario odisey didn't ripped off unleashed great video as aways pariah
Sega does what Nintendoes eventually... I was honestly apprehensive with this idea but after the first minute and showing the clips side by side I was growing more convinced by the second. I've heard that they share a handful of developers like level designers which is why Forces was so lackluster in level design. The majority of devs were busy at Nintendo.
Yeah it seems after gens, some Sonic Team Devs moved to Nintendo. And it seems some worked on Odyssey. But it seems that Sonic Team has been increasing in size since forces. And there hasn’t been losses in Sonic Team devs since forces. Hopefully this new Sonic Team stays and doesn’t leave to another company. It seems they know what they are doing especially with Frontiers Reception being positive. Also on Twitter the Director has been responding to requests of fans for the next Sonic Game and it seems we are going to see the return of Real Pinball Physics/ momentum gameplay in the next game seeing the Director Mario Kishimoto has seen that many people have been requesting the return of proper momentum.

Love it keep up the good work excellent videos. Can't wait for the future Sonic reviews the sonic series you're doing is huge in scope and the analysis whether i agree or not is outstanding and ive been enjoying the non sonic videos as well lately. Take this as you will. But I vaguely remember something about the Mario Odyssey team having at least a few people who had previously worked on Sonic Unleashed.
A question a bit unrelated to the video: Are you also going to make videos about sonic unWiished, or maybe even the Java version of the game? And keep up the good content man! I especially enjoy hearing the takes you bring up in your gameplay analysis videos.
And about this video's subject. I also think maybe a reason why both games ended up having these aesthetics, is that both were some of the first games in their respective franchises, that really tried to push realistic graphics on HD consoles. And a really natural way to achieve this, is literally copying reality, and hence that could be how they came up with the traveling around the world to similar to real-life destinations. That's my little theory.
Also. Comparing Mario Odyssey, a game fully polished and released at time not rushed a love letter to old school 3D collectathons... To SONIC UNLEASHED a game that barely works that people just remember for stablishing the stupid "press button to speed" basically killing any type of MOMENTUM for the franchise since then. With a extra required mode to beat the game that doesn't look at all like the regular one.
Sonic Unleashed isn't about gaining momentum but maintaining it through precision platforming. You are judging it for not being a follow up to SA1 which it was never meant to be. Also the "boost to win" argument is just braindead, there's a reason people have stopped using it.
I mean Then again, Sonic did steal many ideas from the new super mario bros games in Colors/Lost world. Mario is just doing the same with Odyssey and Bowser(s) fury as revenge for stealing their ideas
Agreed. Both games have the main character turning into a wolf. Both games also have a fairy guide character who has problems. And both have a character who has aminisa. Also both games were on the Wii, and are both playable in HD.
I’d say the games are very similar in their concepts, but not really in their execution. If you actually look at Holoska next to the Snow Kingdom, or compare Empire City to New Donk City, they look, sound and feel wildly different. Odyssey’s kingdoms all have some kind of silly Mario twist, and honestly resemble Paper Mario or Sunshine more than anything in Unleashed. Sonic Unleashed is much more grounded and familiar, making it feel like Sonic is just blazing through the real world. Odyssey also loves messing with art styles to make it feel like Mario is out of his element. Luncheon Kingdom, Lost Kingdom and Ruined Kingdom are especially out there aesthetically, while Sonic Unleashed is pretty consistent from beginning to end. I feel like the concept for Odyssey wasn’t just to be a globetrotting adventure, but also to make Mario feel like a fish out of water, which Unleashed doesn’t really do for Sonic. In fact, it’s 06 that went for the “fish out of water” vibe, which is why Odyssey got so many 06 comparisons when it was first revealed.
My first instinct was ,,Well, that's a goofy video title. Wonder if it's just a joke or something like that." 5 seconds into the video I thought to myself ,,Wait, he actually is right though!" Just shows how impressively observant you are while playing these games.👍
Hats off for Nintendo to make Mario Odyssey for what it is. But then Sega got the lead years ago over this. Funny. Mario Odyssey trailers had this feeling that I had been there before. Especially the New York stage they showcased early on.
I like how this guy still likes to compare Sonic and Mario even though Sonic and Mario at the Olympic games murdered every last bit of excitement to see these 2 gaming icons in the same game
Both are traveling around the world, and the characters that appear are the main protagonist, the archenemy, the little brother, the heroine, and this time's guest character.
Funny how when Sonic copies Mario, everyone’s quick to point it out even if the similarity isn’t there at all. *Cough Cough* Lost World *Cough Cough* Yet when Mario copies Sonic, no one bats an eye.
Something else you didn't mention is that both games have near their endings the villains finally fulfilling their life-long dreams just to get trashed by the heroes (Bowser's finally actually marrying Peach and Eggman finally built Eggmanland)
Hard-core Nintendo fans: "Sonic Unleashed ripped off Mario Odyssey!" or "Nintendo invented world travel!" Lol Also this isn't just Sonic Unleashed...but about that Mario roll...
Also I wanna point how "Sonic's father" basically PLAGIARIZED Cappy from SMO for his game, yeah remember _"Balan"._ That thing was a Wannabe Aladdin Genie with a humanoid Cappy design.
Only mistake with odyssey in my opinion is that it doesnt have luigi in the main story(i know there is the ballon world DLC but anyways),and yoshi is post game content.I wanted them to be in the main story
@@dantelawrence4676 its just (in my opinion) not fun, especially the werehog, just not my thing. I'm more of a fan of the boost levels, but even then, I think generations did it better. Half the game doesnt gel with me, and I find the other half just alright.
6:36 Eggman always had his "casino- amusement park" aesthetic even his plan was making "eggmanland". Bowser Kingdom referenced Nintendo's old forgotten business, hanafuda cards.
at this point , i really wonder if nintendo would ever make a donkey kong 3d with game play of country games , come to think about , there is a rumour suggest that many game developers worked with sega are now working with nintendo and they probably left sega after unleashed, and with donkey country games having an unique style of momentum fast paced platforming that has slops in level design but not with momentum based physics , while being closer yo the kind of platforming that mario is , you would think it would much easier for sonic game developers who probably went to nintendo after unleashed to make that

They also end up fighting a stronger version of the pre final boss (Forgo Leon and Supreme (tethered))
-both protagonists gain control over a new, overpowered, version of a previous form (Morpho Sword and Cyber Super Sonic) before fighting the final boss.
It's weird just how many similarities these two games have, and apparently Mario & Luigi Brothership may end up being similar to them as well, from what I've seen (but I haven't played the game yet and am avoiding spoilers). Sorry for the long comment reply.
Glad I wasn't the only one to notice this. You definitely went deeper than I have though
Most of the plot elements and general feel also applies to Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario, I actually kinda laughed when I first played Mario Galaxy because the opening gameplay setpiece is pretty much the same from Paper Mario, saying that Mario Odyssey and Sonic Unleashed are uncannily similar in vibes needs to include how those games vibes are similar to what Mario already did before a couple decades ago, and even then Mario or Sonic probably didn't do this first, there's probably a game or movie or series that did this before them and they took inspiration from that
There's also a power-up in Odyssey that allows you to run on water.
Also, Mario went to the Moon in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and across the entire Galaxy twice in Super Mario Galaxy 1-2.
i saw the title and thought "oh no phariah finally snapped"
and now I'm trying to convince myself that mario odisey didn't ripped off unleashed
great video as aways pariah
I know i comment on every video you put out, mostly my opinions on the Sonic game you're reviewing but super glad i found this channel just quality quality videos. Love it keep up the good work excellent videos. Can't wait for the future Sonic reviews the sonic series you're doing is huge in scope and the analysis whether i agree or not is outstanding and ive been enjoying the non sonic videos as well lately. Great channel. Deserves more love and subs
At first I was like, "are you smoking bananas?" But each time you explained, realization felt like a cold shower
Now talk about how Mario Sunshine and Sonic Adventure 2 are really similar
Both were on the GameCube lol.
Take this as you will. But I vaguely remember something about the Mario Odyssey team having at least a few people who had previously worked on Sonic Unleashed.
A question a bit unrelated to the video:
Are you also going to make videos about sonic unWiished, or maybe even the Java version of the game?
And keep up the good content man! I especially enjoy hearing the takes you bring up in your gameplay analysis videos.
And about this video's subject. I also think maybe a reason why both games ended up having these aesthetics, is that both were some of the first games in their respective franchises, that really tried to push realistic graphics on HD consoles. And a really natural way to achieve this, is literally copying reality, and hence that could be how they came up with the traveling around the world to similar to real-life destinations.
That's my little theory.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. They are both my favorite games in the series.
I actually have the same kind of feeling when comparing Ratchet & Clank All4One with Sonic Lost World.
Here's a cool idea: a crossover of both games! 😊 THAT would be lit in my opinion!
Well Mario and Sonic at the olympic games exists but i don't think that you are talking about that
I always thought Mario Odyssey was similar to Sonic Frontiers.
Apparently some of the people who worked on unleashed went to work at Nintendo
5:00 I’m glad they took this approach with Mario.
This is my first time seeing someone pointing this out, so FINALLY!
I mean Then again, Sonic did steal many ideas from the new super mario bros games in Colors/Lost world. Mario is just doing the same with Odyssey and Bowser(s) fury as revenge for stealing their ideas
With this stretch, I wouldn't be surprised if your back was broken
nintendo does that sega does
No wonder i was hooked on these two games a few years ago
The Nintendon't joke really fits here.
There’s also the laid back piano covers of each games theme that they have
Yeah if Nintendo character is like sega character look like a a same game there
Like Sonic Unsalted and Mario Odyssey
Another thing to note is that in both games you use coins and rings for currency :)
2:02
This was a major same as you moment for me with these comparisons.
Also .steam gardens = planet wisp. Dinosaur scooter chase = city escape.
I also think that Sonic Unleashed and Twilight Princess are quite similar
Agreed.
Both games have the main character turning into a wolf.
Both games also have a fairy guide character who has problems.
And both have a character who has aminisa.
Also both games were on the Wii, and are both playable in HD.
Just saw the title thought about it wathched the video most of my thoughts matched.

I imagine that Odyssey took inspiration due to the main idea being so similar.
Almost every similarity between the games are just common tropes ...
My first instinct was ,,Well, that's a goofy video title. Wonder if it's just a joke or something like that."
5 seconds into the video I thought to myself ,,Wait, he actually is right though!"
Just shows how impressively observant you are while playing these games.👍
Hats off for Nintendo to make Mario Odyssey for what it is. But then Sega got the lead years ago over this. Funny. Mario Odyssey trailers had this feeling that I had been there before. Especially the New York stage they showcased early on.
I like how this guy still likes to compare Sonic and Mario even though Sonic and Mario at the Olympic games murdered every last bit of excitement to see these 2 gaming icons in the same game
Oh, I got a video planned to rant about just that.
@@Pariah6950 how convenient
Both are traveling around the world, and the characters that appear are the main protagonist, the archenemy, the little brother, the heroine, and this time's guest character.
some of the developers for generations and unleashed went to work nintendo so this might be the case lol
I found Bowser’s Fury weirdly similar to Sonic Unleashed.
I have not played it yet but i think you are the first person on the internet that i saw doing that Comparison
This video is just further proof that an adventure game featuring Mario and Sonic CAN work! 😄
Funny how when Sonic copies Mario, everyone’s quick to point it out even if the similarity isn’t there at all.
*Cough Cough* Lost World *Cough Cough*
Yet when Mario copies Sonic, no one bats an eye.
It's quite surprising how these two games have so much in common. Wish I could say the same for how I feel about them though
Ah, yes, the two games about travelling the world
You forgot the most important similarity: both are the peak of their respective series
That's funny, too bad this isn't an April Fools video
@@AkameGaKillfan777 sorry for your bad taste
@@Laekith The average Unleashed stan, can't handle anyone not speaking out about their perfect masterpiece of a game completely immune to criticism.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 it's not perfect by any means, it's just the best Sonic can be imo
Something else you didn't mention is that both games have near their endings the villains finally fulfilling their life-long dreams just to get trashed by the heroes (Bowser's finally actually marrying Peach and Eggman finally built Eggmanland)
Funny how a lot of nintendos devs are sega alumni
Welp that just make me love both games more
Clicked for a troll video, stayed a oddly fascinating argument 😅
After you are done with sonic videos it would be cool to do the same with the Mario series
You know, for a fact that if unleashed came out after Odyssey critics would be like "faster mario odyssey." lol
Hard-core Nintendo fans: "Sonic Unleashed ripped off Mario Odyssey!" or "Nintendo invented world travel!" Lol
Also this isn't just Sonic Unleashed...but about that Mario roll...
Didn't Unleashed came out first how did it rip off Mario Odyssey?
@@sonixx3272 that's the joke lol
@@DannyBenS94 ohhhh
@@DannyBenS94 but 𝕤𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕠𝕦𝕤ly though if you told me Sonic Unleashed was developed by Pixar I would've believed you
Y'know, I never picked up on these things. Maybe I should try Odyssey sometime, considering Unleashed is my favorite game.
they’re both PEAK FICTION AS WEL
They're both awesome games.
Also I wanna point how "Sonic's father" basically PLAGIARIZED Cappy from SMO for his game, yeah remember _"Balan"._
That thing was a Wannabe Aladdin Genie with a humanoid Cappy design.
I mean Nintendo did copy off Sonic before so this ain't no surprise and I did notice this playing Odyssey
If you look at every bit of their history, what would one do without other? There are many similarities in some aspects.
The fact that the similarities are that big is kinda sus tbh lol
Before I start watching, I'm going to assume this is a fifteen minute joke. But let's see what happens. 😭
Only mistake with odyssey in my opinion is that it doesnt have luigi in the main story(i know there is the ballon world DLC but anyways),and yoshi is post game content.I wanted them to be in the main story
Do momento que eu vi as gameplays de super Mario odyssey eu percebi as similaridade.
Não esperava ver outro Br por aqui

I clicked on this video cause i thought you were mad, now i feel insane for never noticing
Still hate unleashed though
Why do you hate Unleashed?
@@dantelawrence4676 its just (in my opinion) not fun, especially the werehog, just not my thing. I'm more of a fan of the boost levels, but even then, I think generations did it better. Half the game doesnt gel with me, and I find the other half just alright.
6:36 Eggman always had his "casino- amusement park" aesthetic even his plan was making "eggmanland". Bowser Kingdom referenced Nintendo's old forgotten business, hanafuda cards.
Here we go again…..
Welcome to the Underground
at this point , i really wonder if nintendo would ever make a donkey kong 3d with game play of country games , come to think about , there is a rumour suggest that many game developers worked with sega are now working with nintendo and they probably left sega after unleashed, and with donkey country games having an unique style of momentum fast paced platforming that has slops in level design but not with momentum based physics , while being closer yo the kind of platforming that mario is , you would think it would much easier for sonic game developers who probably went to nintendo after unleashed to make that
Nintendo be like: Fine I'll do it myself. and just did it better
I already knew Super Mario Odyssey was way too similar to Unleashed the moment I laid eyes on it.
Due to my Sonic over Mario bias, I must call Odyssey a copy of Unleashed.
Thats an egg on nintendos face
5:35 isn't like it was the most STEREOTYPICAL U.S city in the planet.
Great minds have to think alike when they're the same people lmao
Guess we're not crazy.
