Madonna, only female in the Top 5 and the "newest" artist to appear within the top spots, ie. less time to sell records as the others. Very impressive stats.

What people need to remember is that the Beatles only recorded music for 7 years!

And, that's just The Beatles' album sales, they have well over a billion and a 1/2 in sales for combined units: singles, albums, cassettes, 8-tracks, and cds. And, they usually sell more units per year even now than anyone else. Amazing!
As for Bee Gees, they were NOT simply a Disco band, like a lot of people think. They were big in the '60s, before Disco was a thing, and through the '70s into the '80s, and produced some incredible songs. You should definitely react to Bee Gees! Starting with "Too Much Heaven," which is a classic and showcases the Brothers Gibb's voices in spectacular fashion. You'll be stunned!!

I think it says a lot that the three biggest selling artists in this list were all popular in the 60s (Michael Jackson with the Jackson 5). The 1960s really was a transformative decade for music.

Elvis dominated from some time in the 1950s to the early 1960s. The Beatles dominated from about the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. There was overlap, too. MJ was early 1970s to 1980s, I think. .o0

Bee Gees are the best, they wrote 1000+ songs for themselves and other famous artists like Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand and they would write still iff Mo and Robin were alive. Guinness World Records lists Barry as the second most successful songwriter in history, behind Paul McCartney!

RIAA has them at 21 million albums sold in the US. Never the mega album selling band like some of their peers The Beatles. Zeppelin, Floyd, Eagles, AC/DC etc. They had one 3X platinum, four 2Xplatinum, and a long list of platinum records. Can't explain it. I would have thought Who's Next would have been Diamond (10X platinum) or close to it.

    • @braudabo

One overestimate that sometimes. The best-selling album is "Tommy" (1969) with approx. 20,000,000, only one more album (Who's Next, 1971) reaches more than 4,000,000 copies (always assuming that these lists are halfway correct...).

Always knew the Beatles were at number one. Think it would be interesting to see the most successful song writers by team or individual. Not really sure why Phil Collins shows up under USA though - he will always be British to me. Same for ABBA and number one in thier homeland forever.

    • @patticrichton1135

How do you explain then, that the BEATLES are number one in sales here (actually it's probably more than that now) when their recording career, touring, movies, was from late 1962 till their breakup 8 years later in 1970? Next year, on Feb. 9, 2024 it will be 60 years since the BEATLES performed LIVE on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW for the first time in the U.S. Their FIRST U.S. concert was 2 days later in Washington D.C at the Washington Coliseum on Feb. 11, 1964 (which is available to watch their entire performance here on You Tube) and the next day on Feb. 12, 1964 their second U.S. concert at New York City's CARNEGIE HALL. The BEATLES were the FIRST ROCK BAND to play at CARNEGIE HALL. So just because a band had a "short" career, doesn't mean it affects their sales. When music is EXCELLENT, it lasts and will always be popular.

The Beatles are now over 600 million albums alone. Doesn’t event count singles, which they didn’t put onto albums! Or their solo work. (Btw, I love that whoever made that video trolled the Stones by using a picture of The Beatles 😂.) It’s even more impressive because back then you had to go to record stores to buy albums… I’m surprised NSync wasn’t in there (I’m going to check their numbers) and that Britney wasn’t higher. I love seeing Prince but damn he made it hard to find his albums for a long time.

600 million album sales might be slightly too high , from my research on dozens of sites I estimate it's well over 450 million , maybe as high as 500million.
Both Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd sold more studio albums than any other band including The Beatles. The Beatles total is overwhelming boosted by all the big selling compilation/ best of albums including The Red , Blue, Love, 1, Anthology, Past Masters etc taking them way past both Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd for total album sales . You still don't understand the scope. The Beatles are at #1 but their actual sales dwarf the number you have here. I'm not sure of your source but Wikipedia and Guinness have Elvis at #2 with global sales of 500 million to 1 bill, making him the best selling solo artist in history. Michael Jackson has sold a lot but his actual comparative amount brings him no higher than 3rd or 4th. The RIAA(US) have Presley #3 behind Garth Brooks with Jackson maybe 6th although Brooks admits Presley is ahead of him. Both the Beatles and Elvis have huge back catalogs (Especially Presley whose list of recorded songs stands at over 700) and album sales continually are derived from them. In the 2010s the Beatles and Elvis were the only noncurrent artists to rank in the top 10 in album sales. Incredible!
It's important to separate solo artists from any time they're associated with a group. They aren't the same entity. This list was circumspect in that regard with Ozzy. I'm not sure it's clear they were as diligent with everyone. This list seems to be an outlier. But it was still interesting if curious.

Nothing personal, but Gretta is not compared to Zeppelin by any real Zeppelin fans. The only connection is that their lead singer works really hard to sound like Robert Plant. He just doesn't have the feeling behind his voice. Guitarist is no Page. Other two can't compare to Bonham or Jones. Robert's lyrics, the music. No one comes close. I've heard that Gretta tries not to sound like Zeppelin now. That would be a good thing. (Sorry, don't mean to slam them if you're a big fan of theirs.)

A lot of these totals are calculated weirdly . Queen for instance have only sold 90 million studio albums, their greatest hits contribute a boost to sales obviously above that.
They add to the album totals with streaming and views on various sites. These are not album sales and shouldn't be added.
The biggest 3 bands are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin then Pink Floyd for album sales. Floyd and Led Zeppelin then drop to 7th and 8th after solo artists inclusion.
    Peace

You are absolutely correct. There is no way that Queen have ever topped Zeppelin...in fact, only the Beatles have outsold Led Zeppelin in album sales, and the Eagles have recently been up there with Zep as well ( not counting solo artists like Garth Brooks).
Queen should be and have always been quite a bit father down the list. They are nowhere near the top 5 sellers.
Not sure where these numbers are coming from, but they don't figure correctly at all when you look at the actual numbers. The lists ( unlike this one) have always been pretty consistent - at least the reliable & trustworthy ones, for several years. The top 5 have always been the same top five for 20 years or more.
As for LZ, their album sales alone are between $300-400 million and have been for quite some time. Not the $200+ million or so that was shown in this video. They surpassed that amount many years ago.

@@MJEvermore853 agree mate , The Eagles are still about 60 to 70 million sales behind Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Their greatest hits is their biggest selling album. There are another 4 or 5 bands including Queen close together after that.
Some sites count 10 streams of say Bohemian Rhapsody video as an album sale for Queen which is frankly ridiculous. Peace

Fleetwood Mac was and is a British band. The band was formed as a blues band in the 1960s by English musicians Mick Fleetwood and John McVie - hence the name of the band Fleetwood Mac. The rest of the band were also English, including the gifted guitarist Peter Green. By the mid 1970s only Mick Fleetwood and John McVie remained, so they recruited John's English wife Christine and then a Californian couple, Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham. Given that all of the band members of the original band were English and that Nicks and Buckingham were invited to join the already existing English band in its second incarnation, what on earth is "wild" about calling it an English band?

And in the 1960s and 1970s (indeed, until a few years ago) there were no such things as streams and digital sales. It is calculated that during the 1960s and 70s over 200 million Beatles singles were sold, in addition to 600 million album sales. So, in total, the Beatles sold over 800 million records.

@@UFGHF365 You don't seem to understand that in the case of the Beatles - who broke up in 1970, remember - there were no "streams", or digital sales. They didn't exist then. The numbers relate to actual physical sales of Beatles singles records and albums, which make the huge numbers all the more remarkable. In those days, long before personal computers and smart phones, you had to physically go to a record shop to buy an album or single. To me it is astonishing that a whole generation has grown up without knowing that reality. I can still remember the thrill of getting the bus into town in 1964 (I was nine) and going into a record shop to buy my first single record - "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles (it cost six shillings and thrupence - about 3 pence in today's money) and walking out holding the little black disc in my hand.
