You can tell when big albums were released. You can see when Hotel California came out for The Eagles, Rumours for Fleetwood Mac, Back in Black for AC DC, and then Thriller for Michael Jackson. Then in 1990/91, you see Madonna pass up Michael Jackson when she put out Vogue which was huge (not as big as Thriller, but I'd bet I'm Breathless is her biggest album). STaying power is easily seen. The Beatles broke up in 1970, Elvis died in 1977, but their sales were still out there.

    • @eileendovernyc

I think like a prayer and the Vogue single combined with the immaculate collection and the blonde ambition tour, truth or dare and justify my love created that massive numb. I know I’m breathless wasn’t a big seller on its own but the vogue single was massive. She could do no wrong in that era. I’m so boggled that we didn’t see Simon and Garfunkel and I feel like Queen should have been higher up especially in 1981/1982 with the release of the game album.

    • @nathanieljohnson5908

Madonna passing MJ in 1990-1991 was because of The Immaculate Collection, which still remains her biggest selling album to date. And ofc Vogue helped, I'm breathless and the blonde ambition tour. But I'm breathless was actually her worst selling album at that time because it's a jazz album

What was most shocking was Eminem pretty much being the top from 1999 to 2007. A rapper, in the age of the Internet. He pretty much saved CDs and created a landscape for the likes of Lil Wayne and the others by the late-2000s. Madonna is a weird case. Kind of the female Michael Jackson in many ways and more 'pop' than Tina Turner and other big women around this time. She's clearly crazy and not extremely talented, with weird songs, and fairly generic pop music. She was just one of the best at it before everybody else, but you see a lot of MJ in her and pretty much everybody else post-1982.
But, my real realisation is that Elvis might be the best of all time. He stayed way up there from about 1955 to the 1990s, and never really left America to tour, either. He was a master of every possible genre, had a very great, unique natural voice, could dance quite well, was very good-looking, had good song-writers, and was highly popular across the generations. He massively inspired MJ, for one. Without Elvis, this video likely wouldn't even exist. He single-handedly saved music, along with Jerry Lee Lewis, Ben. E. King, The Beatles, and so on. But, again: The Beatles merely copied Elvis for many years (very clear in their early stuff, and some of them are direct covers of older music, such as Twist and Shout).
Queen now has sold the most if we judge by streams and such, but a lot of that is since about 2015. Though they were still massive in the 1980s and sold well, they largely died in the 1990s when Freddie did, and music radically changed. But, they are big again due to their great music and Freddie's natural voice. This makes me think Queen is likely the greatest band of all time, and the next 10 years might just prove that even more. Don't forget: Queen was going very strong since about 1975! Not quite as early as the others, but a long time given that they have 6 of the best-selling songs of all time according to some datasets (with MJ, U2, and AC/DC in second place with 4), and they had some of the best and most popular albums of the 1980s and early-1990s, and still did well in the 1970s. If Freddie had lived, they'd likely be the greatest by far (at least into the 2000s).
Still: the fact Eminem cuts through like glass is very interesting. I've largely put that down to (a) his clarity of speech; (b) his talent (which wider than you might assume); and (c) his extreme speech/freedom of speech (in an age that was drowned by either anti-freedom of speech and dullness or simple girl and boy groups, as Em often talks about). Honestly, without Eminem, music would be dead and look horrible post-1990 or so (at least for the biggest sales). On the other hand, Em was so good and singular that it meant that music really crashed after Em fell off (around 2009). Now, I think Em is still the only great rapper in 2024, and one of the best musicians. Many other bands are still going, but I dislike almost all young/new music since the 2000s. I dislike K-Pop, Madonna, Swift, Drake -- all of them. From rock to rap. I dislike it all. The only areas I really care about are Slipknot, Foo Fighters, Tool, and some other older bands that still make decent music. But even here, I don't love these bands. I like old Foo Fighters, though. I also like AC/DC and much more.
Cultures change as generations change, and technology. You can clearly see this, and I also feel like Michael Jackson left a crushing hole in pop, which was never really filled. Eminem merely ripped it apart. Pop died with MJ/Em. Queen was a mixture of all genres, and Freddie died in 1991, to get a sense of the vast time differences here. It's 2024 now. Who is the King of Pop, or rock? Elvis and Queen and MJ and EM still stand firm. Indeed, I think Queen, Elvis, and Eminem were some of the best-selling artists online downloads/streams in 2023, but you can check that if you want. A lot of Gen-Z are going back to the great music of the past, so I think this will become more common, and the likes of Drake and K-Pop will keep going down in the future. But, we'll see. :)

Yes, good point about Garth Brooks. I vaguely remember people thinking he was a bit of a joke.
About Sinatra - I was growing up in the 60s and I can remember hearing him a lot, when my parents had Radio 2 on, or The Light Programme, whatever it was called in those days. All those crooners like Dean Martin and Andy Williams. 'My Way' came out in 1969, so Frank being there at the start was reasonable to me.

As for Garth Brooks, I'm not a country fan either. I know his name because I have family that are. Any time you had a large jump, that is when you could expect that a big album had been released or someone died. This appears to be for worldwide sales, not US alone. Queen didn't appear until Night at the Opera came out in late '75, they hung around near the bottom, but did not take over first place until after The Game and Greatest Hits I (late '81) were released. 1983-1990 were nightmare years for Queen sales in the US, while they were the biggest thing since sliced bread everywhere else. The Eagles roared to the top in 1976/77 on the strength of Hotel California and maintained that into the '80's due to successful solo careers by Frey and Henley.

A band like Pink Floyd released "Dark Side Of The Moon" and stayed on the charts for years due mostly to that great album, then shot back up when "The Wall" was released. It seems by 1980-90s the "Best Selling" artists just needed a few new hit songs, or a new album. No longer about artists with multiple albums and sustained music quality.

I love this video and have suggested it to a number of channels to take a look at. I think you do need to see it all, if only to see the sad decline in quality - from the musical geniuses of the 70s and 80s to mediocre non-entities who appear later. I mean, I just noticed on your little fast-forward there someone called Flo Rida. Who the hell is she?
As a diehard lifelong Elton John fan it's so good to see him up there for so long. I love the way he disappears for a while, pokes his head up , hovers, then shoots back up to #1 again in 1998 and all of 99. You'd think this was something to do with The Lion King or Princess Diana, but the first was in 1994 and Goodbye England's Rose was in 1997. (And that is still the best-selling single of all time - or maybe the second, because they don't really know about the sales of White Christmas.)
It's a shame you didn't mention Billy Joel - he was hovering around the middle to the bottom of the charts for ages, and at times it seems you were naming everyone around him - but not him. If this is because of some long-running feud or legal matter between you and Mr Joel, then we'll leave it there. But as an EJ fan of course I like Billy, and it's good to see him selling so well.
Thanks for the reaction. Data Is Beautiful has some very interesting stuff on his channel.

  • @macsnafu
    @macsnafu ปีที่แล้ว

This is fun, but it would be more instructive to know when big albums came out. Elton's first big jump, for example, looks like it coincided with his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Bruce Springteen's jump in the 80s is obviously from his Born in the USA album. Michael Jackson was apparently already climbing with his Off the Wall album, but Thriller is what really put him over the top. Pink Floyd had a big album with Dark Side of the Moon, and then climbed again with the Wall. And so on and so forth.
Frank Sinatra was pretty much ancient history by 1969, and I was suprised to see him so high on these charts. I was also surprised the Beatles hung in there so long after breaking up, but I guess I shouldn't be. As a high school student in the early 80s, I was one of those people buying Beatles albums.

It would've been interesting to include the years starting around 55 when rock n roll came to be and became the major moving force in culture for decades. Elvis and the Beatles were top dogs then. Sinatra's peak singles years may have been the 40s. In the 50s he had some singles success but mostly recorded albums and established a respected acting career. In the 60s Frank's recordings enjoyed a resurgence.
This chart seems to measure the success of not only individual albums but also the continued popularity of certain artists' catalogs. That could be why artists like Stevie Wonder and the Rolling Stones, who had highly successful releases barely registered here while other artists who also had deep catalogs that still generate revenue show up higher and longer.
On a Google website both Elvis and the Beatles showed up in the top 10 for most album sales in the 2010s.

But in 1974, Why Me, Lord was released and shot up the chart. Madonna in 1990 reinvented herself from being the cute teen singer to a more adult content creator. Garth Brooks had a great song-“We Shall Be Free”--song we could still learn from today. That was in 1992. So be fun finding out why singers changed when they did.

I'm at a loss as to the significance of music sales, in general, but I would put more credence to the sales in the early 70s when people had fewer dollars for leisure items (gas wars & rampant inflation-2 or 3X the recent rate). In the 80s we had cassette radios & we would make mix tapes off the radio play of our favorite songs/artists. Some radio stations were known as "album Rock stations" & would play one side of an album without commercial interruption. While there were computers, they were mainly used in business & were desk-sized clunky things with tiny B&W monitors that only had text capability. There were some intranets among colleges usually used by student coders. Personally, I wouldn't buy an album unless there were as least two songs I wanted. However, radio play was based on requests called into the stations, not on music sales. Attendance at live touring shows would most likely give a more accurate picture of 70s & 80s musical tastes.

Such classic acts like Elvis, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zep and others are a guaranteed to sell at some volume in any year. It is interesting to add to these measurements what was going on at the time. The meteoric rise of some, the fading of others. Vinyl to tapes to CDs. I kind of expected to see more than a slight blip when Elvis died by these measurements. But the Eagles kicked butt in the later 70s. I was sick of them. Over exposure? But that attitude has changed immensely with the distance and age. Then came MTV and those would could employ that effectively. British New Wave. I remember beginning to lose track of it around 1984 as I became preoccupied elsewhere. So, that part and beyond is my mystery. The last act that ever really caught my attention was Nirvana.
    Oh...and Tame Impala...
    and Arcade Fire....yes...them, too.
