PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF THE EXCEPTIONAL IMPACT THAT CARLOS KLEIBER MADE ON MUSICIANS AND AUDIENCES
A VIDEO PODCAST SERIES BY JON TOLANSKY
Podcast 3: Der Rosenkavalier - When and under which circumstances did Carlos Kleiber conduct in his younger years? By the time that he was at the helm of this performance here in Vienna in March 1994 he was conducting just a small handful of his favorite works, now and again. And this music "Der Rosenkavalier" of Richard Strauss was one of his very favorites. Being so immensely in demand now Kleiber was able to choose his ideal cast of singers a long way in advance and he had the luxury of working with them individually and personally well before the full rehearsal period began. And in a later podcast in this six podcast series commemorating the inspirational genius of Carlos Kleiber you can hear Dame Felicity Lott his favorite Marschallin read some of the letters he wrote to her about "Der Rosenkavalier".

We saw him conduct this at the Met with the same three women. One of our greatest musical experiences.

The Vienna video lacks the electricity of the live 1990 Metropolitan Opera performances. Simply one of the greatest performances I've ever attended.

Is there an explanation for why Octavian is played by a mezzo-soprano?

When Strauss asked Hoffmanstal for a play, he asked for a Mozart opera (comming from Salome and Elektra), and so he did a modern play based (or related) to Nozze di Figaro, where Cherubino is singed by a Mezzo, who plays too a teenager in love with the Countess, whereas Rosenkavalier means The Marschallin.

I'm disappointed in this segment- I'm not sure if it's a sign of the rest of them- but there seems to be more about the Opera (one of my favorites) than about Kleiber, and sometimes the hyper editing, especially the images of Kleiber, are too much- and definitely goe against the very sensibilities of Kleiber himself. I'm generally disappointed if the lack of depth of this series considering the depth of Kleiber...
