Podcast 5: 'La Traviata' and 'Tristan und Isolde' - Carlos Kleiber’s life and art and the power he exerted over his audiences and the musicians who worked with him could be called a personal Attic tragedy. Kleiber was endowed with extremes of Dionysian passion, imagination and improvisation on the one hand, and, on the other, Apollonian rigour, meticulousness and intellect. The triumphant resolution of his conflicting talents and feelings yielded performances at inspired levels of artistry and technique that became legendary in his lifetime. Two of those very special productions conducted by Carlos Kleiber were two of the most popular operas and ultimate, immortal tales of love and longing. Featuring some of the most prominent vocalists, Kleiber gracefully guided the orchestra and audience through both operas respectively.
