Journey without Steve. Chicago without Peter Cetera. Styx without Dennis DeYoung. Foreigner without Lou Gramm. All these bands did not have hits after their lead singers left. 😖
This is interesting. First of all, this is the deal( contract) they made when they kicked Steve out of the band in 1998. If Steve had decided to keep singing, Journey without Steve Perry would have been nothing. Most fans would have bought tickets to see Steve and not Journey without Steve Perry. Steve Perry made Journey a success. The record label was going to drop them after 3 albums and the record label wanted a singer to put them on the radio and that's what Steve did for Journey. Plus, he co wrote almost all of the hit songs they continue to play on stage today. Look at the set list! All songs Steve Perry made famous. PLus the replacement singers were/are Steve Perry sound alikes. So, as a fan, I think Steve Perry deserves every penny he receives from the Journey tribute band that is on the road today!
Schon was a nobody hired gun guitarist with Carlos Santana and didn't make bank and years later he takes it out on Perry, the big difference is Perry wrote much of the lyrics to the very songs that put Journey on the map...He very well deserves his royalties...That's how the music business works....
I would hardly call neal schon a nobody. As a kid he was recruited by Santana at age 14. He was a prodigy. At 17, Eric Clapton asked him to join Derek and the Domino's. He is considered one of the best guitarists of all time. Steve Perry was a huge part of Journey's success, but Neal would have gotten a great gig regardless of Steve joining the bans.
@@ericwaldron3599and many years later Schon nearly bankrupts the band with his and his wife’s frivolous credit card spending. No wonder he needs the Steve Perry royalty payout
@timo4040 My response to the comment was that Neal Schon is not a musical nobody, he is an incredible guitarist according to anyone who is great including Eric Clapton and Prince. His spending habits were not up for debate. He has been irresponsible, but Journey is a highly lucrative brand. Their music, merch and concerts generateva lot of money every year. They are far from bankrupt. A lot of that is from touring which Perry gets a piece of with no effort. Schon and crew do all the physical heavy lifting there. I think he has done OK by Perry.
The partnership of Steve Perry and Jon Cain was Journey. They took the band to heights they would never have reached had it not been for Perry/Cain song writing. Journey was a boring, faceless stoner band before Perry transformed them. The addition of Cain was icing on the cake. Some of the greatest rock music ever created.
Don't know the legalities of it all but I do know this as a teenager from the 80's, if it weren't for Steve Perry as the front man with that voice, that hair, that smile, my friends and I would not have had the T-shirts, albums, or any future merch. Journey without that voice would have been no competition for the other 80s rock bands. They would have been air supply with no air. Unless you tell me Perry was at a Diddy Party, I am always going to be team Journey with Perry.
They didn't 'cross paths'. Herbie Hewett the mgr brought Perry in and Neal had a fit! Read Herbie's last interview, it's online. He had gotten notice Journey was getting cancelled for the tours - tours 'warming up the audience for the 'stars' so Herbie got Steve. So you can say, Steve Perry saved their bacon! Shortly after, Journey was selling our arenas- according to Herbie, the first band to do arenas and use Jumbotrons! Interesting read.
Neal should be thanking Steve like a grateful MFer for making him and Journey a legend. Without Steve, Journey probably would have disbanded, and not been very famous and/or successful!
When you hear a Journey song the first thing you notice is Steve Perry’s voice that’s my opinion, as great as Schon it’s Perry’s voice on those iconic 80’s songs that made Journey immensely popular

Thanks to Steve Perry, people know who Journey is and want to listen to their music because of that voice.💯
They never really tell the whole story, do they. This is something else from that interview Neal said: QUestion: Do you get tired of it being defined by his [PERRYS] presence or his absence? Neal: Um-no. I think he contributed so much to the sound of the band, obviously, to where those songs are gonna be embedded in everybody’s heads and hearts forever. And I think that we accomplished a lot together.
Yeah I remember that interview. He actually admitted that Steve has such a unique voice that they can really work with him in making so many different song types. Which is why he made the band successful. I'm at least glad neal admitted that.
You can not take money with you when you die. Only have the memories and love spent with family and friends. I think it is sad that Neil Schon can not get over himself and his ego. Most people do not have a fraction of what he does. He should be thankful and realize and give Steve Perry credit. Steve Perry is the voice for Journey and can never be replaced. He needs to realize no one knows all the experiences they have had as a band but the Original band members. Leave your differences behind and unite together like the beginning. True fans only recognize the Original Journey with Steve Perry.
Perry ASKED to come back after 10 years. The band didn't want him back. So Schon got what he deserved. Perry MADE that band famous. Without him, Journey would've folded long before.
Neal and Jon both sold their rights to those songs that Steve helped write. Steve held on to his rights. So who cares about the music and who cares about money?
Perry got a great severance package when he left Journey and Neal is bitching about it decades after the fact. Neal is a lousy businessman and he’s trying to cover his expenses because they’re out of control. Several years ago he bought three Lamborghinis in the space of a year. It’s obvious he doesn’t have the resources to afford his lavish lifestyle. His wife is only with him for his money so when that dries up he’s heading for another divorce.
I always wondered why he would sell his main guitars , he used on Infinity and Escape . It all makes sense now . I think it's pretty safe to say Jon Cain is telling the truth with the lawsuit against Neal for the bands finances .

There is one common denominator in every controversy involving Journey and its Neil Schon. The fact is without Steve Perry, there is no Journey. Prior to Steve Perry, they were a struggling club band nobody heard of or wanted to hear. Steve made the band what it is today. Nobody goes to see journey for songs that were released prior to Steve Perry or after his departure. His vocal gifts were so iconic and awesome... As he sang.... you felt moved deeply and a beautiful sound that is healing and full of deep emotion.. As far as the business side goes? Money really began to flow and in huge amounts.... So he is due what should be coming to him. It's sad that Neil cannot understand this dynamic.... He should be Thankful to Steve and find a way to mend the fences and find forgiveness... We all need this to happen so that their Story i remembered as Beautiful and touching... As far as Cover singers? Some were okay... but none of them could match Steve and how he did it.... I only listen to the Music where steve is singing.... I never bought the stuff after Steve left... Same goes for Foreigner except i like Todd Michael Hall of Riot V who can really sing those tunes
@dave3805 Yes you are correct, and I have listened to and loved Journey and Santana since 1972. But Neal Schon has searched the planet for a Steve Perry replica, at one time even found someone with a similar name with Steve Augeri. So Neal himself knows how important Steve was and still is, so he should never complain about the amount of money Steve is still being paid.

It doesn’t sound like uber spendaholic prima donna Schon is much easier to get a long with. Even Ariel ( AI Steve Perry) has had enough.
You brought up all these ole founding members, but without Perry and Cain the entirety of those members existence ( just like pre Buckingham Nicks Fleetwood Mac) would have been very interesting story of “almost rans”. Nobody on earth was buying their junk music before Perry. He made them rich and gave them the careers they still have today.
Dont stop believin’ that.
@@scrwwea_nhl_hut5288 nobody doubt’s the chemistry they had …but like Rollie he split. End of story. He can’t act like the victim…and in successful acts this is the norm.
@@scrwwea_nhl_hut5288 also, as great as he was Journey had the deal and without that vehicle we may have never heard the name Steve Perry. Personally I wish Rollie would have stayed because that a huge part of that great sound they had when Perry joined. Much like Van Halen it became two separate bands. The second with Cain very successful but they also became more pop and lost a certain edge…
My God! Journey would never had risen to the level they once were without Steve "The Voice" Perry! He wrote or co-wrote most of the bands greatest hits. He deserves EVERYTHING he can get. They are touring today with Arnel based on their past success.
How can somebody even think for one moment? That Steve Perry wouldn't deserve any money from journey.I mean, really? He was the face of journey with that voice. And it's just unbelievable the greed that people have
Without Steve Perry there would be no journey! Just like there ain’t one now !
Journey without Steve. Chicago without Peter Cetera. Styx without Dennis DeYoung. Foreigner without Lou Gramm. All these bands did not have hits after their lead singers left. 😖
Kansas without Steve Walsh
So true. I miss all those great singers.
You are wrong about Chicago they had 5 top tens 7 top 40' on the charts after Peter left.
Spinal Tap without Nigel
@@chestrockwell7023 Lmao! Well played my friend
And Jonathan Cain wrote most of the music to their biggest hits
Don't know the legalities of it all but I do know this as a teenager from the 80's, if it weren't for Steve Perry as the front man with that voice, that hair, that smile, my friends and I would not have had the T-shirts, albums, or any future merch. Journey without that voice would have been no competition for the other 80s rock bands. They would have been air supply with no air. Unless you tell me Perry was at a Diddy Party, I am always going to be team Journey with Perry.
You nailed it with every single word ❤️
Facts 💯Team Perry all the way!
Neal wouldn't have a dime had he not crossed paths with Steve. It was a great combination. Be thankful it was. Let it rest.
Perry put Journey on the map. They were nothing before Steve Perry
Although I do like Journeys first three albums.
When you hear a Journey song the first thing you notice is Steve Perry’s voice that’s my opinion, as great as Schon it’s Perry’s voice on those iconic 80’s songs that made Journey immensely popular
Steve must be pretty important, because moving forward they Journey find singers that mimic Steve.
Exactly
Because most known songs were written for steve’s voice, and so the singer must have a voice that resembles steve’s.
Perry was why I listened to Journey. Jealousy and greed from the rest of the band are the reasons why Journey is no more.
Blame Neal Schon. Leave the rest o the band out of this.
@@ssmouse77you're right because neal is the only co founder still in the band so he would be the one in charge.
He deserves everything he gets ...so get over ur selfs ...
Wasn't for Steve Perry, Journey wouldn't have been the band they were. Neil should shut the hell up,and be grateful that Perry came along when he did.
.. perfectly articulates why Neal is hated by so many people.
No Perry. No Journey. That simple. Give him what he is entitled to.
journey would be a distant memory without Steve Perry...
And nobody would’ve ever known about SP without Journey.
His solo stuff while he had two hits is just okay.
@@edbigtruck But he did have hits without Journey . What have they had without him . And why did Neal think it was so important to get a Perry sound alike . A good karaoke singer really .
@@TheJukeboxjimcuz those songs demand that kind of voice.
@@marioaguileraiii8181 Exactly my point .Schon who has an overrated opinion of himself , can be replaced .They never really replaced Perry . No matter what Neal thinks

God Bless Steve Perry! He deserves every penny! He got me through many rough times!
Sounds to me like Neal is jealous and envious of Steve
He's always been jealous of Steve from when Herbie brought Steve to Journey.
Neal is a nasty, imature brat and thief.
Steve Perry deserves every single penny he gets from this band. Journey would be nothing without him and that is reality. He took it to a level that for 50 years people have been curious about them. Thanks to Steve Perry, people know who Journey is and want to listen to their music because of that voice.💯
Journey was going nowhere until Steve joimed the band.... je wrote, or co-wrote ALL their hits.... he deserves every F*ing penny.
They never really tell the whole story, do they. This is something else from that interview Neal said:
QUestion: Do you get tired of it being defined by his [PERRYS] presence or his absence?
Neal: Um-no. I think he contributed so much to the sound of the band, obviously, to where those songs are gonna be embedded in everybody’s heads and hearts forever. And I think that we accomplished a lot together.
Yeah I remember that interview. He actually admitted that Steve has such a unique voice that they can really work with him in making so many different song types. Which is why he made the band successful. I'm at least glad neal admitted that.
With Steve Perry Journey songs dominate radio play. Post Steve Perry new Journey songs ZERO radio play.
I didn't even know that Journey recorded any new songs without Steve Perry. They must not be very good songs.
Doubtful people would have even remembered Journey if not for the contributions of Steve Perry.
Let me put it like this: without Steve Perry there wouldn’t have been any royalties to be shared.
Perry ASKED to come back after 10 years. The band didn't want him back. So Schon got what he deserved. Perry MADE that band famous. Without him, Journey would've folded long before.
What are you talking about? Steve went back and they made their last album in '97. Did he try again ten years later?
Whether Neal likes it or not, Steve made Journey!
Neil Schon is the most ungrateful person there is! Steve Perry made millions of dollars for him!
Hey Neal, without Steve Perry no one would know who you are.
Do you mean he’s not remembered for his collab with Jan Hammer?😂
Santana would...
Sammy Hagar would...
Jan Hammer would...
Looks him up before you speak.
@@lindenarden667 I did Einstein. Without Steve Perry, he's an also ran like you.
Neal and Jon both sold their rights to those songs that Steve helped write. Steve held on to his rights. So who cares about the music and who cares about money?
Steve is Journey’s reason for popularity. He deserves to be paid.
The Lambos can cover some of the divo...
I always wondered why he would sell his main guitars , he used on Infinity and Escape . It all makes sense now . I think it's pretty safe to say Jon Cain is telling the truth with the lawsuit against Neal for the bands finances .
When I think of Journey, the first person I think of is Steve Perry. It certainly isn't Neil Schon.
Serious this is fucking absurd.... Neil is ruining journey. Or the ultimate journey tribute featuring Neil schon.... He's money hungry and honestly journey lately sounds terrible... And the cover bands are sounding better than the actual journey..... Which is ridiculous
Steve Perry made journey ,Steve’s unique voice, how can you say he didn’t deserve to be paid,he deserved every bit of gratitude and money he got ,he is truely a talented man.Steve Perry is a legend❤❤
They specifically looked for a singer who sounded like Steve, so yeah, they're "hanging on to his coat tails".
Great point!!
Perry came out on top. He got away from Schon's ego and petty schoolyard bs, while still making huge money off of his years of hard work.
This obviously lives rent free in Schon's head.
Steve perry made journey more famous n more hits then ant other members his voice made them big n not Neal steves singing will live way longer then Neal n the way he was treated shame on them steve perry will live on n on while Steve will shine Neal will fade into darkness
Jon and Neil forget they wouldn't have what they have if not for Steve.
Seems like every time I see something about journey, it’s always about Neal Schon, and money! He tried to screw Jonathan Caine out of money, and now Steve Perry! I have a great idea for this band……QUIT!
Cain is a rat too
There you go, as soon as you mentioned a wife was involved it is clear what the driving force was. Despite the musicians indicating they were the founders it was Perry and his amazing vocals that made the band.
Not to be disrespectful to Neal Schon (and I think he's a great guitarist and at one time there was a magical chemistry between the boys) but who was Journey before Steve Perry? Who are they now? Cover band? I think Arnel is great but ... Steve Perry put his heart and soul into it - truthfully I think Steve has been short changed. Who's whining- Steve? Neal? - think you both wanted different things, so it seems
Who was Perry before Journey? He gave up music and went back to the turkey farm. If not for Herbie who Perry backstabbed Perry would be a no body.
@@phillipmarlowe0525 If Journey had not discovered Steve Perry, Journey would have been in the infinite space of universal non-existence, Journey was known after Esteve arrived.

Disagree. They would have found someone else or evolved into bigger band anyway. Perry was nothing before Journey. Journey at least has a strong following. Perry sucked then and now.
@@phillipmarlowe0525yeah, right. They were about to get dropped by the record company before Steve Perry joined them. Steve is the reason Journey became so popular. Neal didn’t mind all the money Steve was making him, though. He’s still making money because of Steve. Neal has always been an arrogant, whiny a**. That’s why he couldn’t get along with any of them. Like it or not, without Steve, there’s no Journey.
Not taking away from the band but musicianship doesn’t create hits.
That iconic voice got them all paid.
Journey was very good pre-Perry. Different, but quite good. With Steve Perry they became commercial giants. Schon’s ego has been hurt since.
JOURNEY WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BIG WITHOUT STEVE.
It sucks that all of these guys MADE IT. They made it to the top. And this will be their legacy. A feud.
Without Steve Perry they are not Journey.
Neil Schon is upset that he doesn’t get the recognition, but it’s almost always the front man that gets the recognition and Steve Perry made the band what it is. Today all we have is a karaoke version of what journey use to be. Don’t get me wrong, I like Arnel and they put on a good show, but it isn’t Steve Perry and never will be. Without Steve, Neil wouldn’t have his millions and he owes a debt of gratitude to Steve for the success of journey the last 50 years.
Steve Perry was the correct formula of rocket fuel to finally launch Journey off the ground and into the Cosmos...
His voice is that of an Angel and full of soul and inspiration.....
Same.
Ah yes, Neal Schon and his Journey cover band. They weren't jack shit before Steve Perry and the Escape album.
Naw the classic journey sound is when Rollie was with the band that’s journey
Steve was in the band before Escape. Jonathan joined on the Escape album and fundamentally changed the sound.

But it’s Steve Perry’s voice that put them over the top….Thats why you have a lot of guys that try to perfect or imitate Steve’s iconic sound
Journey isn't worth seeing without Steve Perry. Glad I saw him in 1987. I have seen tribute bands better than today's lineup
Steve Perry may have been The New Kid on the Block, but became everybody's favorite member!

Perry was Journey. Without him they would have been nothing.
Wtf......maybe the most destinctive voice in music.Neal should be paying and saying thank you to Steve
Well since Neal wouldn't have the career in Journey he has today without what Steve Perry did. Neal should just shut his mouth about how much Steve still makes while Neal tours playing all of Steve's biggest songs. Songs Steve and Jonathan wrote not Neal unless he slapped his name on the credits afterwards.
Perry was the band. Steve put them on the map. The rest of the band was good also, but Perry was the name and voice
I can't imagine Journey without Steve Perry's smooth vocals, I think he deserves credit for his contribution to the band.
Like a marriage, any long term relationship has struggles. They were an amazing band that even more, wrote memorable songs. Each person had value and contributed in their way.
Journey without Steve Perry is like Styx without Dennis DeYoung. They can still use the name but they're not the same band.
The “truth” is that Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain collaborated on some of Journeys biggest hits and deserve far more credit and recognition than Neal has ever been willing to admit.
And all these years later when I think about the band all I can picture is Steve Perry and his amazing voice... Couldn't even tell you the names of the other guys.
It's always been known that Neal's Ego really gets in the way & he doesn't want anyone getting more attention than himself
