    Very nice to look at on the way to Vegas, but actually the plant does not produce as much as it had hoped to... and also Burns natural gas to PRE-heat the water in the early morning hours so when the Sun peaks out, it continues to boil the water in the tower, that creates steam that spins the generators!
    Ivanpah was advertised as designed to produce 940,000 MWh of electricity per year, but only is able to Produce around 740,000MWh/yr as of 2019. Nevertheless it was something that was talked about on 60 minutes back in the 70's, and finally was approved in 2010, built and in operation in 2014.
    Amazing!

    We drove by this by accident on the way home from a Route 66 Photo excursion. Because of your amazing drone footage, we have resolved to re-visit this area at dusk. Just one suggestion. The popcorn music doesn't express the weird magnitude of this project. May I suggest "Oh Fortuna" by Carl Orff as the appropriate music?

    I flew my drone,a Phantom 4 Pro, here in February 2017 but stayed well away from the tower and didn't fly over the heliostat field either as that's not legal without permission from the owners of the plant.

      If you don't have FAA restrictions, you do not need permission from plant owners. And according to the FAA, there are no restrictions over that plant.

    Drove by on my way to Vegas this last weekend. It's a mind-blowing thing to see in person. I still can't decide if its a good thing or a bad thing though. Just like the wind farms outside of Palm Springs. They're kinda cool when you first see them but then you realize its just a bunch of junk littering the our otherwise pristine desert landscapes.

    • @rosafort3858
      @rosafort3858 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What, Littering? Its a necological friendly way of producing energy - without emitting CO2. Which is great, considering the effects it has on climate change. Furthermore its way prettier than coal power plants

    The upside is that the plant generates $4.2 million worth of solar electricity a year.
    The downside is that it costs $74 million a year in electricity to run all those electric mirrors.

    • @hypercoder
      @hypercoder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it would be out of business in this years it has been running.
      the name is "heliostat"
      btw, the electricity to run the heliostats comes from the plant itself and its verly low speed.
