Big Solar Comes of Age

  • The largest solar thermal plant in the world opens in California's Mojave Desert, after a debate that pitted renewable energy against a threatened tortoise. The Ivanpah solar plant is one of seven big solar farms scheduled to open in California in the coming months, as a result of the state's push to produce one third of its electricity from renewable energy. Some 30 states have similar mandates.

    The storage plant alluded to at 3:29 (Crescent Dunes) shut down in 2019. It also was down for maintenance for over a year earlier in the decade due to a salt leak, as the salt mix used to store heat is bloody corrosive.

    Well done USA, Great Solar. Obviously these Solar Thermal Facilities can Improve. The Tortoise are Cool, Hopefully they are free to Roam under the Mirrors.

    To the surprise of the builders...it requires enormous quantities of Natural Gas to supplement the power produced by the Solar Array.

    how are the mirrors kept dust free in the middle of the desert?

    While I can appreciate all the fancy technology, shown in the towers and thousands of computer-controlled mirrors, I’m wondering if it was really worth all the money spent in that way. If the benefit is to supply power to 170,000 homes, wouldn’t it be better to simply put photovoltaic roofs onto new homes, either being built or retroffitted? This would achieve the same clean power needs without touching the desert footprint or affecting its ecology. If America wants to be great again, then America needs to start doing great things. The money spent on this plant could have been used to research new roofing alternatives to asphalt shingles, such as directly-applied photovoltaic tiles as primary roofing materials (and fire-proof too). To say the least, the billions spent could have built a LOT of new solar roofs.

    170 turtles stopped you from providing 'renewable' power to 330,000 homes? Gotcha.

      Why is it even bad for the tortoises? I mean, it's just shade, right? As long as workers watch their step.

      when solar csp plants are constructed depletes the land below. They wouldn't have food in this area.

    Solar also takes up far more land than coal. You cannot have any housing even remotely close to it, and the mines required to create the materials and panels are far larger and more environmentally destructive than a coal mine.

      Then again, who would live in a desert? deserts are too hot for humans but just right for solar plants, both photovoltaic and CSP. Neither China or India have deserts as big as the Sahara desert, even Australia has wider deserts than those overpopulated states. Btw dude, this video is about CSP, not photovoltaics, CSP uses only recycled steel, that is to reflect sunlight and molten salts to create steam day and night. You're comment is out of date and too devoid of logic.

    We have plenty of traditional fuel to provide our electricity. We don't need to kill thousands of birds to get by.

    The tortoise could probably care less about the power plant. But I bet he wishes you would quit gluing crap on his shell to track him. Why don't you just build the plant, stop worrying about the tortoise. I never had one pay my electric bill for me.......

    when I first heard of this project, it wasn't the tortoise I was overly concerned for but birds, in Fla developer really hate finding tortoises on the land, even though they are protected many tortoise get bull dozed under. until government official, planners, developers and corporations start thinking small, local, and start installing small solar panels on houses and buildings these type of death traps will be the consequences of putting our interest first. until humans realize that we can't have our cake and eat it as well, but when in history have humans ever put the earth first above our own interest??? from my perspective if we keep putting ourselves and our interests first, future generations will have a very dim one. the future of the earth, will be our future. all the kings horses and all the kings men, will not be able to put poor humpty back together again.

      +Gary Johnson The two biggest impacts on the climate is the sun, and the other is the government debt. Debt can only be paid by removing those resources from the environment.
      People don't take from the environment what they don't need. But all this debt is forcing people to take more than what they need to live comfortably.

    • @garyjohnson9037
      @garyjohnson9037 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tarson Talon nonsense, I although the sun does have the greatest impact on the earth, if it wasn't for the ionosphere life lighting exist at all on earth, the debt was created by our endless war on terrorism, as for only taking what resources we need is nonsense. during WW2 Americans made sacrifices to support the war effort, and if religions lost their tax exempt status we might be be able to repay or reduse this debt...but I don't see this happening anytime soon, power never gives up power they just keep coming up with projects that have very negative impacts on the environment and wildlife.
