  • I am still trying to find the "perfect" binding system for my mini
albums. So here are a few of the different binding systems out there at
the moment. I hope I don't confuse you too much and that you can find
the "perfect" binding system that works for you!
    Here are some handy links:

I found that adhering adhesive backed Tyvek to my hinges does a great job of reinforcing them. The Tyvek 4" tape is a little pricey, but it goes a long way and gives me peace of mind that my hinges will 'prevail'. TFS your comparisons.

I love Laura Dennison's Stack-the-Deck hinge system. Not only is it easy to do but is easy to adjust for larger or smaller spaces AND you can use eyelets on the spine to help keep the binding and spine together so there is no worry about them coming apart. Kathy Orta's hiddeb hinge is nice but if there is too much on a page the adhesive isn't always enough.

    Hi grammie
I agree, I've seen others using the Matte Medium to strengthen the folds and I'm going to try that also. Yes, it's also a material used in kite making. Thanks so much for your help :)

I have watched many binding techniques on youtube. I did try the hinge binding once but was not happy with it. I am now looking for the binding that is sewn in by hand. The material used for sewing is very strong and will never give out. I am not too sure about the adhesives regarding drying out over time. Just my opinion. =)

On my current mini album binding, I have brushed multi-matte on the crease of the hinges (stack the deck) to see if that will add some strength...Also, I think the Tyvek tape is used on those big sheets of Tyvek on the sides of manufactured housing, etc. so you might not find it specifically in the "envelope" section of any search. Hope that helps :)

I bought my 4" black Tyvek quite some time ago & I'm sorry, but I don't remember where I bought it. If you Google it, you will find quite a few resources for purchasing it. I don't have any pictures currently, but I just cut my hinge cardstock and cover it with the tape. Depending on the color of the cardstock/album I cover either the front or the back of the hinges then I score and adhere as usual. Hope this helps.
    Hugs,
    Kris

    Hi Kris
Black Tyvek would be awesome to get a hold of, unfortunately I'm finding it difficult to obtain. Will keep looking and thanks so much for your help :)

You could also lengthen the flap to the edge of the page and there wont be a ridge

Yes, that is a possible solution also :)

Hi Kris, I use Tyvek over my spine & between covers & spine in most mini albums I make, although I must say I have not seen Tyvek Tape??? Can you please give me a link to where I could look at it? Also, have you got pictures of how you use it with your hinges? Would love to see that. Thanks for your comments :)

Has anyone tried doing the hinge system using Tyvek instead of card stock for the hinges? Would that be firm enough?

Deborah Carr Or could you adhere Tyvek to cardstock to make it more rigid ? Xx

Well, should have read the comments first. I see where someone has referenced Tyvek tape. Interesting.

So I guess none of those could be used if I am using chipboard for pages?? It looks like all those would need to have a pocket page so it can slip in. I'm trying to find a video which shows how to bind a mini but I didn't really want rings.
    Thanks for the info.

Ever thought of using Tyvek for your hinges? They don't have to be pocket pages

I found a video that should do what you want with chipboard. Here it is:

Oh yea. PS No, I haven't tried Tyvek. But I found some reinforced labels that are pretty strong. Just haven't figured out what to do with them, except to reinforce the page to the cover. Thanks again for finding that vid.. ♥

You can get Tyvek envelopes from your local office supply store, as well as your post office.
I found another video you might like to watch too. Here's the link:
