    I am so happy that I found your site. I had contacted Kathy Orta to find the dimensions of the hinge binding and was told that I had to buy her tutorial first.
    THANK YOU FOR putting these dimensions in your tutorial. I don't have a lot of money to buy videos and this is a god-send. {many blessings on your head and hands}

    Yes, this bookbinding system has been around for years. I have a Civil War Era photo album here that incorporates this hinge. I did some checking and I don't see how any one could have copyrighted this system as it is, and has been, in the Public Domain for many, many years. You cannot copyright something that already exists in the Public Domain.

      Finandel UTSC I’m in the uk and as it’s not a world patent I don’t think it applies but I agree, I don’t know how someone can copyright a folded piece of paper!

    • @makEKnickers
      @makEKnickers 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is really annoying, however I'm pretty certain the patent lawyers would have checked what was around before, like u said it's a legal requirement. I'm not too sure how it works exactly but dont u have to follow the instructions exactly for it to be 'infringement" ?

    • @bess2rui
      @bess2rui 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Caroline Thomas don't know if you'll still be able to see this post. But do you mind my asking where who buy the civil war period scrapbook? I myself have been using the so-called hidden hinge binding method for years without knowing its name from the first place. It is actually not that hard to method who come up with. So i am pretty sure there must be someone before her who had used that method but didn't get his or her hand into the nasty "patent" field. So all this kathy patent thing is really unbelievable to me. You see i actually did asked a friend of mine who is a lawyer and works for an international law firm which has its foundation in the usa, but the funny thing is, neither she nor any coworkers of hers are convinced of the absurd patent. So although the patent does not cover my country and i am good doing no matter what suits me, i do want to collect evidence and be prepared whenever i need to fight. As far as i am concerned, this patent should be able to be proved invalid

    i would like to make a 4x4 mini album would i score all the lines for the hinges as you did in this video using the same measuremnets for scoring for the hinges. i love your directions ,you are so clear please get back to me .i have looked at other videos for the hinges and wow head was spinning loldo i just cut the hinge paper down to the size i want in height like i was 4x4 so i cut the paper for the hinges 4x4. thank you so very much

    • @SuperHappyScrapper
      @SuperHappyScrapper  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes the paper is cut tip 4 inches tall the width depends on how many pages you have but for each page you would have 2 half inch and 1 score 1\4 Mark for every page.

    Thank you for your video.
    I've done some mini albums using this type of binding but always happens to me the same: with a few views the pages just ripping and the back of the binding come off from the cover.
    What paper weight should I use? I don't know if it's better a thicker cardstock? Or too thicker cardstock makes pages heavy and that's what causes the pages ripping?? And what's better and stronger glue?
    I'm sorry for so many questions but I'm looking for an opinion from experient crafters...

    • @SuperHappyScrapper
      @SuperHappyScrapper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I use recollections brand Cardstock for my hinges and I've never had them tear but then again I don't actually use the albums lol they end up in a box. You could attach Tyveck to the back of the cardstock before you fold the hinges and see if that works and also recently I've been playing with kraftex and it works great for hinges.

    HI Sandra, I understood your answer and that is what I was looking for as far as the gussets were concerned. I know to make the paper as tall as (I call it the binding) What do you call the things that we tape so it will hold the pages? I call that the hinge..so my question is for a 10" album, I know to make the binding 10" tall, and the gussets about 1/2 inch to hold all the pockets and inserts etc, because of the weight, but how high should I made the pieces that hold the pages? Does that make sense? The ones that we tape on both sides before we adhere the pages to it? I am not sure what word I am looking for. I am so sorry to bother you, I really am, but I can't afford for this thing to fall apart...Thank you for ALL YOUR HELP...IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED...thank you, Victoria ps I am putting a very strong buckle and leather strap to hold the album together, but the height of the things I adhere the pages to is what has me stumped. Thank you. again..

    • @SuperHappyScrapper
      @SuperHappyScrapper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I call that part the hinge as well, the part you stick the tape to to attach the pages. That is always 1/2 inch. The part you can adjust is the gusset which in this video is 1/4 of an inch if you want it bigger you can score at 3/8 or 1/2 but the actual hinges are 1/2 inch, example scorning for 1/2 gussets would be to score every half inch( after leaving 1 to 1 1/2 inch flap on both ends of paper to attach to the covers) so 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2 ect

    Oh good! Here you are...you made a hidden hinge tut after all. YAY I just started following your series but needed to make a hinge, since I only just finished the cover, thanks to your tut. :) But I am going to cross my fingers, (Since I've been like 3 days trying to find the tuts I need to get started for...well, actually everything. lol But after looking and looking, I am going to swing it and make mine 1/2, 1/2, 1./2 and skip the 1/4 since I want to decorate mine more. I hope it's what I need to do without screwing it all up. And if I DO mess it up, it will probably top off the garbage can since that seems to be my only progress so far. I'm sooooo upset! Grrrrr
    Oops. sorry to whine. I appreciate your tut so much and I hope I can FINALLY make a mini that looks somewhat decent with all the goodies I went out and spent lots of $$$ on! And I am still waiting to use them. lol I'm so bad at this. :(
    (Ha, I just cracked myself up...but it's better than having a temper tantrum....which might be next.)
    Again, thanks so much for taking the time to teach us newbies! ♥♥

      +vegasjill21 Ok. Guess I give up for tonite. I shoulda known I would mess it up. I don't think making my hinge out of CLOTH is such good idea! lol So I topped off the trash bin.

    I made my first mini album using this binding method. I stuck all my pages to it before attaching it to my spine. Hunky dory. When I attached the hinge to the spine all my pages stuck out an inch further than my cover. I have no idea what I did wrong. My covers were 6" and my pages were 6". Any tips????

  • @michellebrown6394
    @michellebrown6394 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Been loving all the videos!! I have a couple of questions on the hidden hinge binding. I want to leave 1 1/2 at the beginning then score 1/2 then score 1/2 then 1/4 of an in then leave 1 1/2 inches at the end to attach to cover. But can score 1/2 to allow for more room for embellishing my pages. My hinge needs to be as tall as my pages say I do a 7 in page my hinge needs to be seven inches tall also. Now say I have 10 pages instead of 6 pages that means my spine needs to be at least 5 inches wide? Correct if I multiply the number of pages time .50. My question is if I score 1/2 in to allow for fuller pages instead of 1/4 inch. Will I need to make my spine wider?

    • @SuperHappyScrapper
      @SuperHappyScrapper  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes your spine will be approx 5 inches but to be sure you could make the hinges first and measure the back so you know for sure what size your spine will be

    I am still watching people who make these beautiful albums and storing ideas. I REALLY liked how you did yours. (I only wish I COULD BE THAT FAST~lol) I have a question for you...IF YOU were going to make a much larger album, say 9-10" on the outside and your pages a big smaller on the inside, with lets say 6 pages, then if you put another paper on top to so you can make side pockets, then add inserts, belly bands, waterfalls, whatever, it would make the book much thicker..Which is what I am going to TRY TO DO...I just need to know from advanced crafters how wide you would make your gussets and about how tall would you make the Hinges to hold heavy pages? I DON"T want this thing falling apart...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME..I know I can tape together another set of hinges. I am just worried on how large to make the spine and then the internal hinge system...I subscribed and thumbs UP! I just have my fingers crossed mine works out...THANKS!

    • @SuperHappyScrapper
      @SuperHappyScrapper  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hinge needs to be the same size as the pages are tall. If you have 10 inch pages make your hinge 10 inches tall you could make the gussets 3/8 of an inch instead of the 1/4 or even 1/2 inch to accommodate the papers and photos. Hope that helps.

    • @victoriaciolek9585
      @victoriaciolek9585 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES, that is exactly the answer I needed..Thank you so much. I knew the papers had to be as tall at the, I call it the binding..What are the things called that hold the papers...not the gussets but the other things that you tape the paper too?

    You make this look so easy! :-) TFS... I am in the process of making your Theresa Collins album and was already getting a bit nervous about trying to figure out the binding... Wish me luck on the finished album! :-) One question... Do you put the decorative paper on the pages before you put them together? I noticed that you didn't in this video but it seems like it would be easier to do it that way? (In my limited experience anyway... This is my first album... YIKES!)

      lakshmi gayatri if your pages are 7 x 7 the covers would be 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 the spine 2 1/2 x 7 1/2 or 3 x 7 1/2 if you want 1/4 gap between the cover and first and last pages. the hinge would be 7 inches by 11 and do your score marks as noted.

    I followed this video and found that it was pretty easy to follow, and I made my first little scrapbook, and I am very pleased with it. You said on this video that you like this Hidden Hinge by Kathy Orta better than her "new deconstructed one." Did you mean her "Hidden Hinge Plus" that she has patented? Can you tell me the difference between this one and her new one?

    • @thepeddler9226
      @thepeddler9226 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Plus adds 1/2" more to the hinge so when you attach your pages you do so on the 1st 1/2". The 2nd 1/2" (at the bottom) will permit the page to lay flat on the table. I tried it, not sure yet if I like it since the pages are kind of wonky...

    • @SuperHappyScrapper
      @SuperHappyScrapper  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lakshmi gayatri 1/2 inch longer and wider than your page sizes. So if your pages are 6 x 7 your album covers would be 6 1/2 by 7 1/2 your spine measurements depend on how many pages you make and what size gussets you have. Typically I make my albums with 6 pages and 1/4 inch gussets so my spines are 2 1/2- 3 inches depends on what I'm going to put inside.

    Really nice tutorial. Should maybe think of turning off auto focus and adjust it manually so it doesn't blur every time you move your hands. Just an observation because it became hard to see what you were doing when trying to follow your instructions with it constantly blurring out. (I also know it's an old video)

    I usually decorate my pages after I attach so I can coordinate the papers better.

    i liked your tutorial, i must say i find it annoying when people refer to the hidden hinge as kathy orata or whatever her name is, this method has been used for hundreds of years!

      Perhaps if people did not call it a hidden hinge, but called it an Accordion folded hinge. Kathy came up with the catchy name "Hidden Hinge" but I have books that go back as far as the 1970's with accordion binding systems..

    Aren't you supposed to put scor-tape on both sides of the pieces that are sticking up? I only saw you put tape on one side.

      You can use 2 strips but it's not necessary. I've never had my binding fall apart using one
