Stack the Deck or Hidden Hinge?

  • What about the Stacked Hinge? I love both binding systems used by Laura Denison and Kathy Orta, however, I wasn't totally happy with either so I played around and came up with something that I think will work best for me. I'm not taking away anything from either Laura or Kathy as I think they've adapted their individual binding systems the way they work for them - and many others. I just found that I wasn't getting the strength out of the Stack the Deck, nor was I completely happy with the "wings" on the Hidden Hinge binding system. That's why I combined the best of both binding systems to come up with a system that worked for me. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for watching.

    I used junk paper to see if my 1st hinge would work. I watched the hidden/stacked hinges made. But here is the beauty of it all. I was actually making my hinge/stacked your way. I didn't know until I just watch this video. So thanks for sharing.

      Chancey464 Yep, seems to me it's been a tried and true method of binding for decades. We need to just play around with it, like you did, to make it work for ourselves 😄

    After watching loads of hinge tutorials I decided that yours looked by far the neatest. The only bit of your tutorial I got lost on was where the tape went! I did it wrong the first time but recovered it nicely and have a beautiful stacked hinge for my very first mini album! Thank you ozegran for a beautiful tidy and strong hinge system! x

    You are right, how someone tells/shows the process really makes a difference. I know in my case, I sometimes just don't get it from one person showing, but from a different person/perspective I end up 'getting' it. Pros and cons here on TH-cam are so helpful! Again though, depends on that person's perspective - that's where TH-cam is great - more than the one person giving us the pros & cons. Yes, those two ladies have given us so much inspiration for sure! Thanks for commenting :)

    Well Jean, I don't know why I do have the issues I do with the flaps - I either rush it through and not score it properly or something. But I'm so glad it works for you. I didn't put this up to "convert" people, just to see if anyone else was having the issues I was, and that I "may" have come up with a solution for me. Hi Liza
    The only thing I like about Stack the Deck is that it sits nice and neatly on the spine. That's why I took Kathy Orta's hidden hinge binding system and converted it to sit neatly on the spine. I just don't like the bulkiness of the side flaps sitting on the covers. I always stuffed that part up and it never looked neat.

    Yes, using paper bags will take up much more space within the gussets. This method also allows for wider gussets as needed. Thanks so much for your comments :)

  • @ozegran
    @ozegran  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dandelionsg I can see that the binding may eventually come off, or not, but I think it the binding sits much better on the spine and there are no lumps or bumps from the flaps. Kathy has suggested to lengthen the flaps to the width of the covers. That's a possible solution.

  • @ozegran
    @ozegran  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I learned this years ago and make my folds just as you do! Quarter, half, half (inch). Repeat.
    We did all the folding, first, then, ran a bead of glue along the quarter inch parts. Then, pressed all the 'leaves' together. We made one long one, then, cut it into 2 to 4 sections for different pages/images. Our 'flaps' width was purely accidental. LOL

    I've been searching for an album style that I can use to store my various laces and ribbons in... and thought of the "hinge" style... but I wasn't sure whose would work best for me. As you noted, one wasn't going to be strong enough; the other had those side flaps.
    Your style should work very well for me, I think. The hinge pages give me the room that's needed for the bulk that will exist and the strength will let me use it for a long time. Thank you so much.

    I finally get it! Lol! I just watched the video by papercrafter45 using your stacked hinge system. The inside paper goes across the whole cover, which holds the cover on securely. When I use the hidden hinge, I always attach the hinge to bare chipboard and have two inner cover pieces, that's why I couldn't understand what was holding the inside of the book together. This system looks very nice and neat - and I'm sure it's plenty strong enough. Very nice.

    Thanks for commenting :) Let me know how you go with it and what you think of the binding system when finished :)

    I like it so much, I'm just learning, and trying to follow the instructions. I have a bit of a vision problem, so when you fast forwarded I got lost LOL. I'm sure if I watch it a few times I will be able to apply your instruction. Thanks so much for sharing!
