- Today, I’m going to tell you the story of the best car ever made in the Soviet Union and probably the first civilian SUV in the world - Lada Niva. It is produced from 1977 and until this day!
This car was massively sold in Europe in the Eighties and got a very positive reputation for its off-road capabilities and cost-to-value ratio.
I actually owned one of these cars many years ago, and I’m going to tell you my personal impressions and thoughts about this in this video.
It was a car for a very specific niche, very specific customers, but it was so perfectly fit for this niche, that it was considered perfect. Hunters, fishermen, hikers, and there were a lot of them in the Soviet Union, were buying Nivas as a vehicle that could bring you anywhere and back again.
It was a breakthrough car when it was built. It wasn’t the coolest car in the world at the first glance, but it was so perfectly balanced for its purpose, that it made it cool.
It was some kind of a legend and it does have a legendary history that is still going on. And it had and still has a lot of fans not only in the countries of the former Soviet Union but around the whole planet.

I have my 96 model niva already 5 years..although its not my first niva..great vehicles...i have travelled all the country "chile" and neighbour countries ..bolivia..peru and argentina.. i insist..great vehicles..although slow for long distance traveling..but for short distance travel..city and ofroad is great..and i use 99% the time as city car...and its a nice vehicle to drive. Fast enough . Not to cheap in fuel...but not heavy either in fuel

The best 4Χ4 for decades , Reliable, not electronics, well engineered. There are many stories of people at the Greek mountains , agriculture sites, country sites for their hard treatment and reliability. Peeople like hunters, professionals, field engineers ,farmers, shepards have the best impression. Cheap spare parts, easy maintenance. It would be nice if they offer an diesel engine . Simplicity, fuctionality, reability on a wise cost is the success of a car.
