LADA - History of Soviet/Russian People’s Car

  • Russian cars are maybe not the best cars in the world, but they definitely have their fans. Especially LADA which was very popular in the 80s and early 90s (especially Lada Niva), but nowadays can rarely be seen outside of Russia. Let's remember the history of this brand and try to understand why it lost all of its popularity?
    00:00 - Introduction
    01:20 - History
    05:06 - Buying a car in USSR
06:50 - LADA after the collapse of the USSR
    09:44 - Future of LADA
The Lada is one of the brightest symbols of Soviet Russia. One of the most reliable cars in the world. Or one of the worst cars ever made. Depends on who you ask. It was created by a company called AvtoVAZ in a beautifull city of Togliatti (and no, it is not in Italy, it's in Russia!) Its heyday, if it had one, was in the 1970s, but a significant number of cars remain on the roads today, and hold a special place in the hearts and minds of many Russians. The keys to it's success were competitive price, reliability, simple DIY-friendly mechanics, and simple functionality. The car was built under license in several other countries in Europe, Africa and South America. Competitive pricing and ease of maintenance have made the Ladas a popular vehicle for police, cabs, and a variety of civil service and civil defense vehicles in many parts of the world. There have been ups and downs in the history of Avtovaz, but the current fall, unfortunately, has dragged on. The people's car of the Soviet Union was never able to recover from its downfall, and each year the company became more and more unprofitable. It was sold to the French from Renault in 2009, and 12 years later they announced the merging of the LADA and Dacia brands. Which means the end of the era of real Russian cars under the LADA name.

yea in in 80s in Perestroika times young LADA engineers created LADA 2108, they looked to Opel and Simca models design of that times and to Opel engines. Also in the end of 80s they created LADA 2110 and begun to produce that in the mid 90s after gangsta attacks and etc. The quality of part was bad in that period but become better again in 2000s . When renault bought part of Avtovaz that wasn't so bad but Renault-Nissan things caught local production.. When korean cars became more popular Renault-Nissan begun war with them and bought all Avtovaz . The plant come to sstagnation cause Bu Anderson use plant for rebuying Renault components without localization Renault became reacher Lada cought the problems. Modern times Lada still be most popular car in main part of Russia waithout Moscow and S.Peterburg and eastern towns were japanese cars occupy the market in 90s. As far as I can remember it from my childhood, everybody wanted to get rid of these cars in Hungary during the 90s, since the market got flooded by Western cars. But now certain people buy the restored Ladas for a lot of money and handle them like they are some Aston Martins or such. There are Lada fanclubs or simply very proud old (first) owners. Hungarians use the term "Zhiguli" for Lada 1200s too, fortunately it's an easy word to pronounce here. Lada 1500 was in my heart for a while, but I started to question my sanity when I wanted to buy this as a first car in the 21st century, haha.

You can get 190 horsepower by swapping in the 1.6 litre Niva engine and boring it to 1.8 - 1.9 litres, but building an engine is not cheap. Lada has been on quite a journey. From the Zhiguli series being based on an Italian car (Fiat 124), Lada actually had a British Chief designer for much of the last decade. Now Avtovaz (which makes Ladas) is owned by the Renault Group - so the senior management of the company in Russia are largely French.... When I first visited Moscow in 2005 almost every other car was a Lada, but these days the roads are dominated by foreign-brand cars. You have to go out to the smaller Russian cities and villages, out in the Russian regions, to see a lot of Ladas. You still see a few Volgas on the road and, very rarely, a Moscovich.

I love Lada. People were used to treat these cars like crap but now everyone wants one... sadly there’s not many left and prices are sky high.
I was thinking about saving up some money and buying myself a new classic Niva, but in Estonia they don’t import Russian cars because of some political issues and because of the Chinavirus borders are all closed.
Now that you said that they don’t make classic Nivas any more... very sad. Classic niva was the real deal. Probably my favorite car with Lada 01 and 03.
Those new ladas are not my favorite. I’m not really into front wheel drive cars. And French cars in general are designed strange. All plastics, curvy and girly.
I like our good old Soviet automobiles. I think they should leave the outlook and just modernize it slightly. I don’t see anything wrong with our previous designs. These were some great cars in the union. Easy to fix, easy to maintain... what else could one ask for.
Nowadays many drive German cars but those cars are full of electronics that break down on our terrible roads. Very expensive to fix btw. No good for the wallet

Ladas were quite popular in Finland back in the day, because they were a lot cheaper than Western cars of similar size. Some people also bought them as a political statement. Soon after the collapse of the USSR, a lot of Russians came to Finland to buy all the export model Ladas they could find, and took them back to Russia. I guess at that time they had plenty of Lada spare parts laying around, so it would make sense to only buy Ladas instead of VW or Toyota, because Western brands had no service infrastructure in Russia.

If you were to easily repair your machine or machine is so reliable that needs no fixing; it means only profit from selling and no maintenance for you and since no maintenance Cost to you No profit on their part too there.
So they collectively began making parts with less reliable material or techniques and made it harder for common man to repair.
Before that they would give you a manual on how to repair with detailed information, and sadly since this is economically sound argument many of their western counterparts followed suit.
Sadly this is the reality we live in today.

Ladas are extremely rare in the USA. When people first spotted a few being driven on American highways in the 1980s, they would follow them for miles just to gawk at them. There were almost no Russian things of any kind in America back then.

The Fiat 124 was considered a junk car here in the States when they imported them here, I had a neighbor that drove one for a while back in the 1970s. I’ve seen a few LADA NIVAs in Italy. Many owners in the 1990s simply replaced the LADA engine with a FIAT engine since the quality of its engine parts left much to be desired.
In the late 1980s, original brand car parts were hard to find.

  • @Random-nf7qb
    @Random-nf7qb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Quite a few inaccuracies.
The Peugeot 204 was ruled out because it wasn't suitable for mass production in the numbers that USSR wanted.
The R16 was actually the car that won the trials. But in the last moment they tried with the Fiat as the italian government were friendlier.
The 2101 and Fiat 124 are actually quite different. Engine, gearbox, rear suspension, brake system, everything was changed. The engine is completely different, the gearbox was stronger, the rear suspension was redesigned and the brakes front and rear were also changed - the fronts got beefier calipers, the rears were changed to drums as the discs sucked. And it got 2 circuit braking system, when the fiat had a single circuit.
The second model was the 2103, the 2102 was the third model to come out.
And fwd is worse than rwd ;)
And also you said "the models from 2101 to 2109 are the same"
2109 is the 5 door version of the Samara (2108 is the 3 door). Only a handful of parts are interchangeable between the 2101-2107 and the Samara models.

Great vid again Setarko. I owned a Lada Niva for a long time and I loved it because I am a fan of no-nonsense technology.
The brands like Lada but sure also Vostok as a watchmaker representing Russia in a nutshell, and maybe more than the more famous matryoshka dolls.
due to environmental regulations ( CO2 taxes ), an imported Lada Niva will cost between 40.000 and 52.000 euro in the Netherlands. In comparison, you could get also a brand new Audi Q2 or Q3 for the same money,
Its also save to say a Lada Niva is more exclusive than a Bentley in the Netherlands ;-)
