Great vid Phil!!! Perfect amount of commentary. For someone who has been to Yosemite a lot and even lived there for a summer working for USF. It’s and amazing and magical place, and yes with less vehicles even more amazing, because this time of year it’s normally worse than Disney or Sunset BLVD on a Friday night l🤪🤪 Peace Phil👊
This video brighten my day! Hit a major downpour on a downhill yesterday, lost all grip could not stop for the corner and had to do a emergency flip. landed on my back on cobbles but saved my head and most important my bike. Sore but happy, carbon bike still safe :)
Yosemite really is amazing in person. I total skeptical and pessimistic it was going to overrated or not as majestic as it portrayed in every picture book, magazine, etc. First time driving in seeing El Cap, it was holy sh*t that's incredible and I had to pull over just to take it all in. Same for giant saguaro in Az, no picture can prepare for how cool, bizarre and huge they are. Devil Tower is one monument I really want to see, but its a day to days of driving from anywhere.
I first starting biking while living in the valley, and this made me so homesick! Love that loop around the valley floor. Glad to see it's not too busy and still a great ride!
Lived in Yosemite for 10 years, and had to drive to the Bay Area to get my a** kicked in Cat 3 crits. Still the best time of my life (circa !993...) , and you did The Park justice. Curious what KOMs are in Strava - sorry as a sprinter I can't bring myself to follow regularly - for Glacier Point (from the Valley) and Tioga Pass (E_P_I_C) from either Valley or Lee Vining. I have ridden every paved inch of Yosemite and it's all amazing. Always loved your stuff Phil, thanks for taking me "home" for 13 glorious minutes!!!!!
I really enjoyed this style of video, nice to see that it's not all about going fast all the time (though there is defintiely a time and place for that!)
alex honnold reference as later when they're passing el capitan. don't wanna be a smartass, just wanna promote the great documentary "full solo" where exactly the referenced climbing is being portrayed.
So beautiful. Yosemite is absolutely as beautiful and majestic and amazing as you might possibly dream it is. Emily is a load of fun. Did/does she also race bikes? Dramamine makes me suuuuper sleepy, and I weigh double what she does. I heard Bonine makes you less drowsy, but have not tried it. Thanks for the vid!
Enjoyed your video as always, but two of the rock assholes you were alluding to are Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.. Both men were instrumental to Yosemite becoming a national park. (With Mt Rushmore dominating the news cycle, I assumed that’s what you were referring to. I see in other comments you were referring to Stone Mtn., near your childhood home. Sorry for my mistake. Thanks for the fun videos!)
MattGrovesFTW Thanks Matt. Of course I’m likely reading it wrong, but the bucko comes across as a little pejorative. Did I inadvertently trigger you? I certainly hope not.
FYI there are no redwoods in Yosemite. They only grow in coastal zones. There are sequoias which are cousins of the redwoods. The coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) are the tallest in the world, while giant sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are the trees with the largest mass, their trunks often wider than a city street.
I think you’re mistaken. A “redwood” can refer to coastal or mountain sequoia. They aren’t quite the same trees, but they do share the same names. In fact, you can rent a home from the Redwoods agency in Wawona.
@@davewyman thanks. Colloquially perhaps but not accurately. "Sequoias and giant redwoods are often referred to interchangeably, though they are two very different, though equally remarkable, species of tree. Both naturally occurring only in California, these two species share a distinctive cinnamon-colored bark and the proclivity for growing to overwhelming heights. Both also require very specific, though very distinct, climates to survive." www.visitsequoia.com/explore/spring-summer-fall-activities/redwoods-and-sequoias
Wild that you used to ride with Josh Lipka! Ive lived in Western MA for years and he's a well known name, occasionally comes by and smashes KOMs and locals races lol
Phil, the tree you called a redwood was reddish in color. However, it wasn’t a redwood (or a sequoia, it's other name). You were looking at an incense cedar. There are redwoods in Yosemite Valley. You can find some towering over the grave of Galen Clark, who was Yosemite's first national park superintendent. Clark planted the sequoias on his pre-selected gravesite, in the Pioneer Cemetary, well before his death.
Great film Phil. Emily is a natural on camera and very funny. What is the issue with your driving Phil?? Great vibe and scenery to match. Thank-you both. Phil film AND a chilli con carne. Nice. Peace too.
cool video! get a bite mount for your action cam, it's stable, one of the best POV angles and you can hold the handlebar with two hands on the decent and don't die
It looks like there is to set a new strava kom Mt Madonna Rd in Morgan Hill CA/Gilroy CA. It’s 3 miles 1.5 paved the rest is gravel. Pavement is 10-13% max grade 15% dirt is 12-14% max grade 20%
Yosemite is great - but I prefer the "next valley up" - Hwy 4 over Pacific Grade and Ebbetts Pass and back. I love the last part of Hwy 4 from the junction of 4 and 89 heading east. When you think you're over the worst of it at 8700ft at the top of Ebbett's Pass you descend down the other side and hit Pacific Grade. Oh the joy of 25% - but at 8,000ft it feels more like 33%.
Hey phil were I'm at on vashon Island Washington there are Rolling hills and great scenery If you like your cookies Doughy and well I think There amazing, cafe luna Makes them . I worked at The vashon baking company And I can say cafe luna has better cookies.
Phil, why not take part in an English hillclimb season. Typically it's towards the end of the racing season (ie, when it's not skinsuit weather but that's what you wear anyway) and up shortish, steep hills. You should go for a cup o' tea and a bite o' crumpet.
I have a permit for a week+ backpacking trip in two weeks, now I'm wondering if I should risk bringing my bike and locking it in my car so I can ride around the park the day I finish my hike. Mighty tempting.
Suggestion for Phil who says, "I don't know what to tell you," about GF's sleepiness from Dramamine...I suggest you tell her you're sorry and you'll drive more slowly around corners from now on so she doesn't have to self medicate for fear of vomiting.
@@worstretirementever - LOL. True story - my wife woke up yelling from a dream of driving over a cliff this morning. Just had our 36th -- not weeks, years -- anniversary. Love your work, Phil!
GoPro doesn’t do the view from the valley floor justice, not even remotely. When you actually drive through it and see for the first time how insanely tall and massive those walls are, it just sucks the breath right out of you. They’re so tall that when you’re standing underneath El Cap you can’t even see the top of the cliff without extending your neck all the way back. Your neck gets tired after awhile just from trying to look up. To anyone who hasn’t been.. it is 100% worth it. Just go. When you drive through that valley for the first time, you’ll have a memory for the rest of your life.
beautiful area, somewhat ruined by sounding like a New York inner city street and the valley looks like a car lot....degraded by accessability and noise pollution. A Uni professor once said to us before we left, don't go where the heard goes and you'll be all the better for it.
Hey Phil, I saw you riding up Mt. Rose today. I think the view of Lake Tahoe is on par (or a close 2nd) to the Best View in the World. What do you think?
Shame about the car noise : ( although it must be better than usual. The park should be closed to cars except for one day a week. That was a great video, loved the no assholes remark ; )
Awesome in every way, but if you want 'the best view in the world' you should climb the Moraine Lake road in Alberta. Much prettier than this. :-) Of course, you'll have to wait for the border to open first - Americans can't come up here right now due to the crazy high infection rates in the US.
Dude at 36 is breaking climbing records set by doped EPO riders doped for years. No offense you could not even pick up my 1x7 14 kg road bike, let alone ride it. Emily's comments and reactions made this video. Well, other than the amazing scenery. And the ranger anecdote.
Sometimes it's hard to believe there could be places like that on our planet. It's a visual definision of paradise.
