Dude, so many memories sitting on a tenor sax case at the bus stop and then developing disproportionately strong left-side obliques from leaning over to carry the thing as an 85lb middle schooler
This video took me back. I also went to Midvale Elementary, but went to Tucker High School instead of Chamblee, and later raced for the UGA Cycling team. The KOM on Midvale Road reminded me of racing up that hill on my first road bike in high school. Thanks for a great video, Phil.
Also thank you so much for acknowledging the fact that the three on stone mountain were horrible people fighting a war in support of an absolute travesty
I grew up in Clarkston and can definitely relate to having mixed emotions about my neighborhood. Great to see some familiar spots and love your unique storytelling.
Sick video phil. You should come to Pittsburgh and do the “dirty dozen” race. Some of the steepest streets in the world are in pitt as well as “canton Ave.” 37% grade. You’d kill it and get all da KOMS.🤙🏻🤙🏻
It's cool seeing you ride there, I grew up a little north of ATL and I've ridden and hiked there a ton. You're always guaranteed to see lots of Atlanta elementary school kids going for a field trip every day of the week. It's a pretty impressive place in person, lots of history to read there as well. Definitely worth going for a few hours if you're in the Atlanta area. Looking forward to the Chattanooga video as well!
"This is also, you were saying, the... the center of, uh, gentrification at the moment." see gold plated crown vic in background "... which means the gentrification is complete." gold plated crown vic glares at Phil
So funny to see my bike commute show up on one of your videos. Thinks for being blunt about stone mountain and belt line gentrification. It is what it is, they are both great things for people in Atlanta but both have histories that need to be reckoned with. Half expected to see myself walk by in the background of y'all filming on the porch at PCM.
Bad buses are what got me into cycling too. The 11 km route into university took 80 minutes by bus, sometimes more, but only 45 min on my old mountain bike. When that was stolen, I bought a proper road bike, and went from there.
Thanks Phil. I have similar feeling about my home town and school days. that was 50 years ago and still just as strong as ever! did'nt find the real me until I whent to college. Its all part of what makes us… us and what drives us on!
When Phil said Mom was going to drive the camera car, I said, oh man, this will be the worst follow video ever, because a good mom does not follow close enough to get good video. :) Ayesha was cool. Polite of her not to say what she really thought of Stone Mountain.
Great to see some perspective on Atlanta - growing up there as well I think it takes time and distance to see things for how they really were... Riding is definitely much easier now in Melbourne (AU), but still some good riding memories from Atlanta: the Tour de Georgia was a highlight - pushing Cippo up some of the Gaps as he ogled the bikini clad fan on the side of the road; Lance flying by; and an Aussie cyclist near the back of the pack struggling up the Brasstown Bald climb, yelling to us "Who the f@k builds a road to nowhere!"
Southern California native here currently living in Knoxville, TN. I can confirm that it rains here all the time. No one ever tells you that about the South. Knoxville actually gets more rain than Seattle and Portland combined!
Thanks for continuing to provide us all content during this time of isolation and boredom. Challenge for you: Time to switch up that background music, Phil! hah
Hey Phil, Could you make a video about that altitude tent in the intro. Experience using one, results, etc. I think that would be really interesting! Thanks for the content! Love the vids!
I second that motion on a tent video. Have in-laws in Quito, Ecuador and would love to do some riding out there, but might need a little help with the altitude before heading out!
I'm from Roswell GA. Now live in Santa Monica. Seen you riding around Phil. I too miss PoFolks. Drinking sweet tea out the mason jar was the best. You need to KOM Brasstown Bald.
I really enjoyed that one Phil thanks for showing some of your history and your home town. The part in your book about your dad got me and it got me again when you mentioned it here.... love the full speedsuit KOM that made me laugh 😂
Phil I agree with you about riding in Atlanta. I grew up there but didn't start riding bikes until I moved to Athens, and whenever I come back to visit my parents I have all kinds of issues finding safe, fun places to ride. I actually love a lot of parts of Atlanta, but riding a bike is not one of them. Too bad everything is closed now, there's a lot of cool places here.
@@staschristiansen2605 I may have to give that a shot. I suppose if you were ever to ride in the city now is prolly the time from one perspective anyway. At least if I got chased by something it wouldn't be a dog for once.
I live in downtown Atlanta and you rode a lot of the places I regularly hit. Riding in Atlanta does have its challenges. We have been moving more towards the west side of town to avoid some of the traffic. There are also pockets of hidden Intown gravel. Stone Mountain is a nice place to ride, but it is a racist foundation is a shadow that hangs over it.
I think this is the first time I ever heard an American admit it rains there lol I thought it only rained relentlessly in Scotland. Great video Phil and glad you still go home regularly to visit your mom.
...and scary ghost costumes.....yeeehaaawww.....you got the right context on this from Ayesha. The rock needs to weather/erode quickly. Or have one particular spot on it converted into a quarry.
Excited to see if you get up to Nooga! My favorite mountain bike place and I look to "retire" there (from Raleigh). TOTALLY get the vibe about being back home with the house. I just moved out of my house where I lost my wife to cancer into an apartment. #ridesafe #stayhealthy
Wow. Your body language and conversation kind of spoke volumes. If it's what I think it is from the way you started the video commentary, I have been in that sunken place. #respect
I'm sorry for your loss. I know that sunken place. You can definitely feel that darkness as Phil was talking too. I still have "our" house, but rented it out and moved countries temporarily instead, to reset. Currently living in Italy, but not much riding at the mo. Still trying to decide what to do with the house, as I love it and it does have some awesome memories. I guess I'll make a decision when it feels right.
Hey is it just me or is it really hard to hear the guests? i gotta turn it up loud to hear them, then you talk and my speakers distort. even after 16:20 when it suddenly gets real loud for like 10 seconds. love the videos BTW but dude, fix the sound- mic them up or something!!!
Yeah, similar feelings about my hometown, not far from Atlanta. It's a place where people treated me like nothing but garbage. I don't need to go back to that. The people there haven't changed. And yeah, it rains all. the. time. in Atlanta.
Agree on your feelings about civil war monuments. if you want to keep them around, then you have to keep honest about the history. They led armies against soldiers carrying the American flag. They were traitors, and until that word is used to describe their statues, then their statues have no educational or historic value.
Georgia, as a Confederate state, had more trouble with union loyalists than most of the others. Their role in defeating the rebellion is seldom told. Today, even the Georgia communities that were known to be loyal to the Union seem to have erected Confederate monuments and an alternative narrative.
The pro racers got it good now. If they can't get endorsements to rise they can deliver food through ubereats and make 40-80,000 a year. I know because I've worked the job the last two years. A 8-9 hour shift, if a cyclist pushes it, can net 20-40 an hour, and put 80-100 miles a day on your tires cycling! Cyclists got it so good now!
In the ole times if you couldn't find endorsements, you had to giveup, or work some boring job outside of cycling, now this predicament has vanished with the gig economy.
