Was eating outside at Chipotle in Beverly Hills and saw these two go by. I did a double take and started freaking out. My friends didn’t understand why. I really should get new friends.
So, I did pass by these two on Sunday while riding through Beverly Hills. They were descending Coldwater, heading to the water stop before their assault on Franklin Canyon, one of my favorite climbs. Two roadies flew past me heading down while I was heading up, and I heard the tall skinny one say, "on your socials...' as he flew past. My first thought was that had to be Gaimon since he uses that phrase in reference to social media. The rider in burnt orange was kind enough to acknowledge my climbing lumens with a wave. Phil was too busy talking.
The American unit for power you should use is “foot-pound per second ” 1 foot pound is 1.355818 joules. Therefore a foot-pound per second is 1.355818 watts. (As a watt is joules per second) so 300 watts is 221 foot pound per second.
I was a bit surprised to see “endurance” ride with all that punchy climbing up in that area of LA, then you noted “keeping it under 300”. Thanks for reminding me how weak I am 😉🤣🤣😂😢
So many things to like about this video. The tour of beautiful LA, the commentary, the fact that someone is crazy enough to join you on this ride, and the fact that you went back and asked them in the end. lol
This. It's way cooler to say, I did half a horse up that pass than 375 Watts. Of course, then you've got to track your marginal gains well to the right of the decimal point, and we mortals are left with a shank of said horse, so it may not catch-on.
Tour video request: Topanga Canyon, where it all began for me. All the surrounding climbs, such as up Topanga Canyon Blvd from PCH, up Old TCB, then right along Mulholland back to TCB, up and over heading toward the coast through town, then up Fernwood (Fire Station) to Saddle Peak, down Piuma, then Cold Creek to Mulholland, up Stunt Rd, then wherever you want from there. I actually like the Fernwood descent back to TCB. If heading to the coast, it's a safe ride going south on TCB because you're riding the same speed as traffic.
TC has a lot of "hippy era" stories, which you hear a lot about if a resident. Neil Young lived up along Fernwood during the early 70's before moving to his current ranch. The first Manson Family murder in the summer of 69 (two weeks before Woodstock in NY) happened along Old TBC. There was a popular performance venue named Topanga Corral at the horseshoe shaped curve north of town where all the big name acts performed.
It mostly depends on the efficiency of the lamp that produces the light, i.e. how much of the total watts produced is actually visible light. In other words, comparing lumens produced by artificial light with watts is non sensical as the conversion depends on a lot of factors and assumptions
The fact that you did what's basically a half Everesting and it took 7 hours shows how absolutely insane a 7 hour full Everesting record is. Big kudos my friend
True Santa Monica Mountains factoid: The highest elevation you can reach on a paved road in the Santa Monica Mountains, which includes the Hollywood Hills, is Saddle Peak Rd, beginning at the Fernwood/Tuna Canyon intersection in Topanga Canyon. As you climb, you'll know when you've reached that highest point (30 feet shy of 2500 feet) because the road suddenly turns downhill and sweeps around to Saddle Peak proper. It's also ridiculously beautiful up there. I'm gonna guess the distance from the bottom of TCB at PCH to that elevation point is 10 miles.
The more the video goes on, the poorer and slower I feel 🤣 Anyone else seriously remember the Any Griffin Show? I do! I remember the reruns for that. Thanks for another great training video Phil!
I'm a little late to the game here Phil, but if your talking Lumens in relation to the use of a regular incandescent bulb then the conversion factor is 15 lm/w. Therefore if your doing 300 w that would be equivalent to 4500 lm, easy! 😂
The one time I visited the LA area with my bike, I was around Will Rogers park and rode into a road that was marked private. I this rich lady tending to her horses started yelling at me "THIS IS A PRIVATE ROAD!".
Lumens?! C’mon Phil. It’s like you never went to high school. Horsepower! 0.5 BHP = 372.85 Watts. To make it pronounceable and more confusing we should use fractional like we still do in bond trading. 1/16 {‘steenth} = 46.6 w 1/8 {eighth} = 93.2 w 1/4 {quarter} = 186.4w 1/2 {half or +} = 372.8w ... ... ... 1 {buck} = 745.7w And so on... thus two ‘Murican cyclists banter may go something like: “Bro! I crushed the sprint in cat3 this morning. Put the hammer down with 500ft to go doing a buck three-quarters (~1300w) and edged him at the line!” “Dude... that’s SICK! On my best day I’m only good for a buck plus (~1100w) DAMN!” You’re welcome. Now let’s make it happen!
Not them but I think they must have had a follow-car of some sort, or at least they frequently stocked up somewhere. If you look at their bikes and shirt contents, they hardly brought any food at all. For a 7-hour ride you'd need lots more food than that, especially if you ride at that kind of power.
you should get 2 or 3 Go pros one you can mount on your bike looking up at you one on your helmet and maybe one pointing forward on the bike and even under the seat on the back of hte bike then you can do more hands free and get better vid, you had mentioned how tuff it is to do all this yourself.
Hey not to be morbid but i just watched once upon a time in Hollywood and thought maybe you could have gone up cielo drive... Maybe thats bad taste i dunno i just like seeing stuff from movies lol
It's so nice of you to do all this training so we don't have to.

Coldwater downhill demands two hands!

Could also use horsepower as units, for purposes of confusing our metric cycling brethren, for power ouput.
@@lndrstheminer Centihorsepower? Millihorsepower?
How about Electronvolts per year?
If its not metres and kilometres i have no idea whats going on lol Australia only teaches metric
I knew I could come in here and see people nerd out on power units. I'll put my suggestion in for using BTUs. 3.4 per watt.
I was a bit surprised to see “endurance” ride with all that punchy climbing up in that area of LA, then you noted “keeping it under 300”. Thanks for reminding me how weak I am 😉🤣🤣😂😢
OverTheBarsCycling Yup. If I had to do a climbing day like that I’d have to keep it under 200. 😂
When you are always keeping it under 300, that just means all your rides are endurance rides.
And 140 BPM or less. At 300 watts my HR would be redlining in a few minutes.
You should do "I'm burning 10 cookies per hour" instead of watts.
Loving this architectural tour with some cycling on the side 😂
really enjoyed it!! recovering from a crash and feeling miserable you put a smile in my face. Thank you!
Pshhh, Everesting on a bicycle. Do it on a stand up paddle board, then I will be impressed. lol.
Or biking backwards
5:15 "It ends at Jurassic Park, so we're gonna turn around. I've seen the movie." LMFAO
I love these!!!!
You have the best tours!!!
Beautiful scenery, thank you!!!
300w under 140bpm. fml lol.
Totally. That's my heart rate after eating half a pizza.
Agreed. I'd be pushing 160 to keep up with them for a couple hours...
I did rewind, thought i heard it wrong. At 300W i am way above 160bpm. Writing this from the safety of my couch
You're becoming the king of rad architecture tours. I love it!!!
Comedy gold and epic climbing while looking fresh and cool! Nice one Phil, oh and thanks for the crow subtitles😂👍
So many things to like about this video. The tour of beautiful LA, the commentary, the fact that someone is crazy enough to join you on this ride, and the fact that you went back and asked them in the end. lol
i love the dynamic between you two XD
@@CowneloAlvaroid Kom-rad is from now on my favorite term for a cycling buddy :D lol so good
Love the Andy Griffith Show, one of grandpa's favorites. Still watch the Christmas Episode every year.
Barney Fife ! Don Knots was awesome.
@Phil Gaimon, Im impressed you knew the Andy Griffith jingle, haha!
if you can't get your Wahoo to display your power in Lumens you are just not bright enough
"Hey is that LeBron's house?" 😅😆 No shame
1 horsepower = 745.7W 🐴 (not to be confused with metric horsepower)
Everyone willing to move to horsepower say aye. If you say nay I may mistake it for a horse impression
This. It's way cooler to say, I did half a horse up that pass than 375 Watts. Of course, then you've got to track your marginal gains well to the right of the decimal point, and we mortals are left with a shank of said horse, so it may not catch-on.

From North Carolina, so yes, I know the Andy Griffith Show. Been to Mount Airy, too.
I still watch Andy Griffith, just saying. a good wholesome TV show
Damn 644L is like 50 watts. Thats some skill right there
beat me to it
@@mathewrose2951 Im pretty sure that's wrong but looking it up that conversion makes literally no sense.
644 lumens in a halogen lamp is 32.2 watts
It mostly depends on the efficiency of the lamp that produces the light, i.e. how much of the total watts produced is actually visible light. In other words, comparing lumens produced by artificial light with watts is non sensical as the conversion depends on a lot of factors and assumptions
6:52 We have such a term, being only one of three countries in the world that do not use the SI system. 1 Watt = 3.41 BTU/h (British Thermal Unit)!
The fact that you did what's basically a half Everesting and it took 7 hours shows how absolutely insane a 7 hour full Everesting record is. Big kudos my friend
You did so many lumens...you were lit 😂

There is a term; HORSE POWER!!
You guys are clinging on to that term for dear life :)
Hey Phil, how well do you like that helmet..??

I'd ride 15k feet with you! ...but it would definitely take me longer than 7 hours. :) Great ride Phil!
Ben looks like a young Ned Overend.
If you want to confuse people, use horse power instead of watts. 1 horse power = 735.5 watts. 300 watts is about .41 hp.
Whoa! Legend has it that Phil will heart this comment if I'm this early. 😁
I'll give you a thumbs up if that helps ;-)
Ok fine

So whose place was that with the castle walls? Looked like it should have a moat around it to complete the effect.
"would you tell me if it was" 😜😂
Phil should show up to Lebron's house on Tuesday with Tacos...he might have a chance.
That's not Dan B's house...he lives ('rents') in the Bird Streets. Agree that "cookies / hour" should be the new standard unit of measure for power.
that's a flashback of a theme song. Reminding me of times with my grandparents....
I would always watch jeopardy with mine

@5:39 You can see the grade using the bottom of that door and the walkway. @7:35 you have a stretch with NO HOUSES in view
Did you see Producer Michael somewhere?
Some nice roads to ride but man, it looks a maze! Even with a GPS you must need a knowledge of route otherwise bound to go off track.
Lumens killed me 😂
I finally got a road bike a week ago to try racing but now there’s a second wave and everything is cancelled:(
Yes sad :(
Work on your skills man ftlotg🤙
Andy griffith was way out of my era but it would come on on this one channel we used to watch so im familiar!

Wow high end training ground 😁🤙🏻.
I went and watched the Andy Griffith Show intro. Never heard of it before
OMG, it's on amazon prime. www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B00AWMCCHU/
What climb is the house from the show "Bosch" on?
Woodrow Wilson. Top of Nichols canyon
Dude : wind sock. Check'em out!
644 lumens?! Bro, I can barely do 90 decibels!
is there a lumens to kjuls conversion chart?
Nick at night for the win!
Andy Griffith rerun Army, in the house.
Sad to say, I'm not American, but I am old enough to have watched the Andy Griffiths Show....in Black and White.....on a thing called a TV.
BTW Phil i guess the US does have an alternative to Watts, its called horsepower. 1hp = 745 Watts.
You’re suck a cookie. I love it. Haha
It's 2020. What's a "brake pad"?
Im about done after 1,500 feet of climbing 😅
Latigo Canyon was a humbling experience
lazy
lumens? when do cycling computers do lumens for watts?
You guys are lucky with the water. They shut off all public water around here, makes long rides hard in the heat. :/
Horse power is American Watts. 746 watts for 1 hp
I'm 25 years old and can confidently say I know the Andy Griffith show.
it's a stupid show from a simpler time that no one really needs to know. But that is surprising man!
Almost Mont Blanc which is my summer challenge or ( everesting for mortals )
Just sold "Hidden Hollywood Hills" to Channel 5 UK
What size were those feet though? Mouse, bird, human or dinosaur feet?
Only publish your power numbers in horse power it will catch on!!
