We've all seen Nicole work. She doesn't sleep. And even with that work ethic, she would need more than 6 months to renovate. Especially when you have this shut down on top of the cities regular slow process.
Nicole cleared this up on her Instagram, stating that in 2018, Detroit Land Bank (DLBA) owned the house, but they weren't on the deed, but DLBA replied with "So what, we own it". Nicole refused to give possession or sign an agreement giving up her rights to the house, then they disappeared for 2 years. In 2020, during the Covid shutdown, DLBA comes after her again. She sends over her deed, title work, everything and DLBA said that they had a Lis pendens [written notice] that the house was theirs, but she told them to prove it. In a quick ZOOM meeting, she was shocked when she lost the house that she legally bought and had invested in. DLBA told the court that the owner that Nicole bought it from had lost the house to DLBA prior to Nicole buying it and had no right to sell it. Nicole kept thinking, "How did she mess up? How did she lose?" But one thing didn't go away, If they owned it, why didn't DLBA show up on the deed? So she called up her attorney and attempts to negotiate with DLBA, but they tell him to stick it, unless Nicole wants to pay a lot of money for the property. DLBA had ZERO dollars invested in this property and never had possession of it. It was only Nicole who had invested money in it. While they were negotiating, DLBA puts the house up for sale and she's losing her mind. Listing and selling would mean that they would make a profit off of her investment and ownership and DLBA is a non-profit government entity funded by tax dollars and is not supposed to profit. So, after some digging, DLBA didn't record their judgement. Michigan is a "race to record" state, in that the person who files the deed first is the owner. TLDR: This government entity failed to do their paperwork correctly and instead of acknowledging that they pretended it didn't happen, they misrepresented a government entity funded by tax dollars and didn't tell the whole story. She presented all these findings and won her court case.
Thank you for the information on this one. The more I listened to this story, the more pissed I became, lol. Really appreciate you going the extra mile on this so thanks again.
When we look at motive, no one can deny that Nicole Curtis has lovingly restored these unwanted homes and saved Detroit housing history. Bring in the bank examiners. The Land Bank must have neglected to file the proper liens on the house or they would have shown up during the title search. I would countersue too.
The Land Bank never owned the property. They sued the pervious owners but never actually took possession of the property until AFTER Curtis bought it. The previous owners DEFINITELY knew that they shouldn't have "sold" the property to Curtis, but because the Land Bank dragged their feet for several years in filing the necessary legal paperwork to take possession of the house they are forcing Curtis to file her own lawsuit. However, the courts and city government in Detroit are hopelessly corrupt AND working together, so Curtis' suit has no chance of success. It's just like if you get a bogus traffic ticket in a small town and go to court to fight it and find that the judge is the cop's brother.

I'd really like to see the people that work for the Land Bank put their boots on the ground and actually try and reno a house under their own regulations. Gotta love the bureaucracy/
Stick with the court case. Not to be mean, but some of the people that work for the Land Bank, should not have a job. WHAT used to be maximum 250 for a vacant lot became 1,000. Even if you cut the grass for close to 20 years
The plot from any old movie, where the property value goes down and the "Bank" wants to take the land from the people... to sell to a rich land developer to put condos and Starbucks.
That's shameful for the DLBA to be taking such a villainous approach with Nicole Curtis. That woman has put her blood, sweat and tears into rehabbing the homes in Detroit. She loves her city and doesn't want the beautiful homes to fall apart from neglect. Honestly, the DLBA should be paying her or even partnering with her on the rehabs. She has attempted to bring life and revenue back to Detroit and it seems like the DLBA just shot themselves in the foot trying to bully her. With $40 for a 2x6x12 board now...the prices and recoupment of the homes values would be on the rise and possibly bring in future investors. I'm sure now that the word will get around and no one is going to want to do any business there.
6mths is not enough time to to have gas water and windows in a home with no electricity or roof their requirements make owning the property impossible unless you have a large stash of cash
The land bank wants someone "serious" , Just because she's restored dozens of homes does that make he qualified the fact that she does this for a living does that motivate her to do a good job in a timely manner. I can see how they think she's not serious their heads are to far up their own asses to see anything.
Why fight with her... give her the house... She is going to make it beautiful again... She's awesome. I love her show. She is truly committed to restoring houses in Detroit one at at time, and she works her butt off. She is also very savvy and would not renovate a place and pay all the back taxes if she didn't have her paperwork in order.
I'd really like to see the people that work for the Land Bank put their boots on the ground and actually try and reno a house under their own regulations. Gotta love the bureaucracy/
Looked up the DLBA. Seems like a scam for sure!
Nicole is correct...Land Bank has unreasonable terms that most ppl don't know. Buyers beware.
It’s all about the MONEY MONEY MONEY!
Why would the Land Bank ever challenge someone who responsibly improves homes in that area? What the heck?
Detroit, you better get it together. She is investing, and you are not cooperating.
Shes honest a good Detroiter
Get the Mayor involved..
What a stately home, the possibilities...
So banks don't pay property tax....or now grass...I would get a fine...banks are above the law...
Too corrupt for me, I think I will invest money in home ownership somewhere else.
Why do people continue to do business with a City that has been a sespool of inept leadership for 50+ years
Tony Johnson right?
I pray she wins and gets petty with it
Go get them Nicole. Don't give up.
Such BS! What a scam! Sounds like a bunch of crooks! GO NICOLE!!!
6mths is not enough time to to have gas water and windows in a home with no electricity or roof their requirements make owning the property impossible unless you have a large stash of cash
I love to see the homes she works on.
The land bank sounds a bit like a con game maybe it is time for it to go away!
Two reasons not to buy property in Detroit: Detroit taxes and Detroit bureaucracy.
Sounds like another agency to be dissolved
They are never on their shit! We had to clown on them last year. Deeds all wrong and everything.
The land bank wants someone "serious" , Just because she's restored dozens of homes does that make he qualified the fact that she does this for a living does that motivate her to do a good job in a timely manner. I can see how they think she's not serious their heads are to far up their own asses to see anything.
Leave Nicole Curtis alone. She does great work. Sounds like the bank is a scam and just mean people.
HGTV is not doing things for free
Why fight with her... give her the house... She is going to make it beautiful again... Stupid people behind a desk do not realize that REAL LIVING PEOPLE are the answer... they make our neighborhoods better, not holding onto ghost houses... until they fall... Every effort should be made to help everyday people... get homes... if possible... Watching them fall apart... is a crime.
You are absolutely 💯 correct! My smallish size town does stupid stuff like this, too. They will let buildings fall apart for decades, but when someone wants to buy and rehab, they put every obstacle known to man in their way 🤬👹
Hope all the news agencies take this story and investigation on.
Does Detroit make you pay the water bill for previous owner?
Im learning from her and im happy i have followed my first mind
Land Bank is pulling a fast one. Investigate this and their other shady transactions.
Nicole is right! They always try to push you out of a deal or take advantage when they should just be glad someone is taking the project on. .... cities and counties would rather see property and houses sit and rot than to have someone else get a good deal ..... they just want their hand in everyhting. I hope she gets every last penny she put in.
I would support Nicole Curtis over any governmental entity.
