Aram Khachaturian dedicated the violin concerto to his friend, the famous musician David Oistrakh, who for the first time presented the composer's new work to the audience.
In the summer of 1940, a couple of months before the birth of the child, the Khachaturian couple temporarily moved to a well-equipped House of Art located in Staraya Ruza. And there, enjoying life and being inspired by the beautiful nature, the composer decided to write a concerto for violin and orchestra, which will become one of Khachaturian's most outstanding compositions.
The work on the new composition was very easy, you could say in one breath. Less than two months had passed, and the concert was already over. Aram couldn't wait to show his new creation to the one for whom it was intended, that is, to his friend, the young but already world-famous violinist David Oistrakh.
Without an invitation, arriving at the musician's dacha, the composer immediately went to the piano. The music that Khachaturian played was so fascinating and colorful that it made a strong impression on everyone present. Having received the sheet music of the work, Oistrakh immediately began to learn it and three days later paid a return visit to the composer. David came to Staraya Ruza to play a concert, that is, to show the author his creation. Instantly, the audience gathered were greatly admired not only by the sparkling music of the composer, but also by the enchanting performance of David Oistrakh.
The premiere performance of the concert took place in the autumn of the same year. In Moscow, on November 16, an authoritative audience came to the newly opened Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. Among the listeners, one could see Dmitry Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev and Nikolai Myaskovsky, who gathered to listen to Aram Khachaturian's new work - "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra". The work made a huge impression on the audience. The success was tremendous. Soon, the "Concert" was repeated two more times in the capital, and then it was heard by Leningrad, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Kiev and Odessa residents. The popularity of the work grew at a rapid rate not only in the Soviet Union, but also abroad.
The violin Concerto, composed in 1940, was rapidly gaining popularity. During the Great Patriotic War, the work was already well known and was often broadcast on the radio in order to raise the spirit of the Soviet people with its cheerful character and strengthen faith in victory.

These places, their culture, their music especially, and their People Simply Didn’t Exist. It was if there was an IRON CURTAIN that extended from East Germany in the N all the way S through Poland, Czechoslovakia, into Hungary and Romania and ending in the Black Sea. To a young man with an overactive imagination it might as well have been a REAL Iron Curtain as anything Theoretical/Symbolic. I don't know of any other piece with such maturity and voluptuousness as this Violin Concerto.

If anyone should ever ask those whose lifespans overlapped the tragi-comedic years of 1901-2000 CE, "What was the 20th Century? What was it LIKE?!?"
Answer: Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto in D minor, featuring David Oistrakh in a soul-altering Soviet fiddle....
...immediately followed by the LP cut of 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'...

I am not Armenian, but I have been there, and Khachaturian is a national hero. In Yerevan the city is basically built around their big round opera house, the back side of which is a concert hall named after him.
