We personify aspects of nature as Guardians or "gods" because it adds a level of empathy for us as humans, to treat nature right. It's something that society has sort of forgotten.
Also, nope! Te reo Māori doesn't have gendered nouns like most European languages ♥️

Back then christianity was unknown in the Pacific. SO the pople would worship anything they could lay their eyes on. But tangaroa, or Tangaloa in my language was an ancient Goddess ever Island worshipped. If they'd go to the ocean tangaloa was called to bring them lucks in their catch. And if they didn't that'd say, that Tangroa is mad... However, every cultures, and every ancient history in the pacific has their own unique History of this Goddess. We don't worship Tangaroa, or Tangaloa anymore because we're now christians but that's another story there're no shrines anymore. So, basically Tangaroa was the Goddess in the South pacific Ocean.

See, when I was growing up I was taught that Tongaroa, Tawhirimatea, Tanemahuta, Tumatauenga, Papatuanuku, Ranginui etc weren't "Gods" in the same way Zeus and his siblings were "Gods" that's a western, Paakehaa concept and doesn't really fit Te Ao Maaori (The Maaori world view). I was instead taught that they were the progenitors of Tangata Maaori (The Maaori people) and are our tupuna (ancestors) from which we all descend. But hei aha, we weren't all taught the same way hey.

You saying 'hey' makes me think you live in Australia. 'Maaori' as you say dont say 'hey' lol. That's aussie slang. We also dont say 'tongaroa' his name is TANGAROA and they are gods. They're our gods whom we descend from. .dont know which part of aotearoa you come from but 'hei aha' lol ' tangata maori would also be tangata whenua perhaps?? But like you said we weren't all taught the same.

@@blaaahhhh1705 Not sure why my last comment didn't show, perhaps youtube deemed it too mean, try number 2 nee.
I don't know who crowned you "Mistress and Queen on all things Maaori" but you have zero right or mana to tell me what I can and can't consider tiikanga in my whaanau! I don't have to prove my maaoriness to you or recite my pepeha or whakapapa to show you my tiikanga card, you aren't worthy of the privilege! Stick to gatekeeping with your whaanau hey, and keep your nose out of other whaanau business, nee.
Even if I was Australian, what does that matter? He whakapapa Maaori, he Maaori au! Again who appointed you Guardian of all things Maaori? raho! People like you make me wish kaitangata was still a thing -_-
