The 2nd song sings about the cluster stars of matariki (pleidas). For example, Matariki is the mother. Tupuanuku is a child. associated with everything that grows in soil. Tupuarangi is associated with everything that grows up in trees. Waipuna a rangi is associated to rain. Ururangi is associated to the winds. Matariki is Māori new year. With the appearance of the stars its time to plan and start your crop. When they dissappear its time to harvest. Māori Polynesian used the cluster to navigate the oceans.

Kia ora Errol have a look at the NZ band "ardijah", they created a style called Polyfonk from South Auckland. Ardijah formed in 1979 and spent the early part of the eighties playing the Auckland pub and club scene honing their skills as a covers band.
My personal faves are "Do To You", "Watching You", "Polynesian Girl", "moonlighting" just to name a few.

She would visit our small Cafe in Whakatane all the time with her little ones and they are the most humble, beautiful, kind, people I've had the privilege of serving.
Matariki i te pō tells the story of what it signifies for us as Māori. Matariki is known around the world as the Pleaides(cluster of stars) but as you would already know by now everything has a life force and these are not just "stars or planets" to us, It means so much more and although our people have always celebrated Matariki it has only recently been recognized here in Aotearoa as a significant time for us as Māori and is now a national day off. It is our New Year and you are correct, it is a time for family, resting, harvesting, gathering, releasing, preparing, rejuvenating, celebrating, giving, etc. paying homage to Matariki. The dates change every year when Matariki starts to rise in the our skies.
Of course this is only a brief explanation.

Hi! Fun fact, this waiata was used in a video game called Beyond Blue which is some kind of educational underwater game. The game is responsible for making the song popular internationally. Of course, Maisey is well loved in Aotearoa and around the Pacific and she has a few live performances in Tahiti I believe.

I’m not Māori….but Love their culture (similar to ours). Absolutely Love the Māori Language and they are so blessed with angelic voices… Am from Torres Strait Islands (Australia) and have nephews with Maori father. They are so proud of the Maori connection. Love this video… made me emotional too… Our connection to the Ocean, the Sea❤❤

I've seen Maisey many times performing. She is such a beautiful soul and so, so talented and humble. Our performers sing mostly about caring for one another, the environment, and remembering our ancestors and bring grateful for their sacrifices, and also to be staunch and resist racism. We have a very racist govt right now. Stan, Maisey, Ria and other Māori performers encourage us to stand and fight, like our ancestors, and be proud to be Māori! Ria Hall is standing for Mayor of her city, Tauranga!

The second song is about Matariki.
In our myths Papatuanuku (earth mother) and Ranginui (sky father) were in a tight embrace, there was no light in the world just complete darkness.
Their children wanted to seperate them to allow light in the world.
They tried to push them apart but couldn't until Tane Mahuta (god of the forest) laid on his back and pushed with his legs and over a very long time he pried them apart.
The other children were Tangaroa (god of the sea), Haumie Tiketike (god of cultivation), Tumatauenga (god of war and mankind), Ruaumoko the unborn (god of earthquakes and volcanoes) and Tawhirimatea (god of winds).
Tawhirimatea was in a rage because even though it was dark he had freedom to move unlike the others.
He fought his brothers one by one beating them up until Tumatauenga thrashed him.
Tawhirimatea was so outraged that he ripped his eyes out and crushed then threw them into the sky.
Creating the Matariki constellation also known by other cultures as Pliaedes.
To this day Tawhirimatea thrashes the sea and land in rage and sorrow for the pushing apart of Papatuanuku and Ranginui.
The erratic behaviour of wind is due to Tawhirimatea being blind.
Could be other versions of this depending what tribe you are from but thats what my koro (grandfather) told me when i was young.

Before I was a Christian my worship music was Maisey she is beautiful, her voice is angelic and her connection to our land and spirit takes me to another place ❤
From what i understand, the Atua Tawhirimatea (god of the wind) (the one with the eyes) gave his eyes to the heavens in despair of His father Ranginui (Sky father) and his mother Papatuanuku (earth mother) where separated from his brother Tane Mahuta (God of the forest) separated them. The eyes now we see as our Matariki cluster which comes in our winter, to the western world is know as the Pleaides(cluster of stars). Each star in the cluster represents different aspects of our natural world which has come into mainstream media and hopefully now fully into education. Maisey also names each star in her waiata. There is quiet a lot of information online, but always happy to have a korero if you would like.
Ataahua (beautiful). Maisey is the same iwi as my kids, they love this song. It has always put them in a good space 🙏❤️

I was wondering when you were going to find maisy she’s amazing and very talented and yes the water is that blue my parents live near where it was filmed.
I went to Whakatane Intermediate with Maisey. That's where I first heard her sing in assembly. Her, and two others sung 'Going to the chapel' - in awe of her ever since.

Hey bro, just to help you out with Maori pronunciation, it is very similar to Hawaiian phonics. Our vowels are the backbone of every word so learning their phonics is 75% job done. The letters are the same as English(A, E, I, O, U) however they are pronounced much differently and hold the same sound as their names.
A (ahh), E (ehh), I (eee), O(aww), U (ooo). Every other letter in our alphabet holds the same sound as its English counterpart with the exception of WH (f) and R which has a rolling, motorboatish sound. In its entirety, our alphabet is as follows
A, E, I, O, U
H, K, M, N, Ng
P, R, T, W, Wh
Once you have the phonics down, you basically can read in Maori as there is only very rare instances of variation but we’ll save that for a later lesson. Hopefully this helps you in the future

My BIL house was usually the place nz musicians would turn up to for him to do tracks etc. Maisey Rika and her sister was one of those people when she was very young. I am very fortunate to have met a lot of nz artist through my BIL

They say when we Maori pass, our spirit goes on their last journey running 90 Mile Beach towards Cape Reinga. There is a Pohutakawa tree where our spirits' journey ends. Our spirit climbs down the roots of this tree to the underworld or our homeland Hawaiki. If you ever come to Aotearoa, you should head up North right up to the top to Cape Reinga, and when you look over and you can actually see the tree of spirits down below the hill. They say the tree is 800 years old.

The word "kine" in our pidgin is really slang for "the kind," so it's just English. The native language, olelo, has the same vowels as te reo Maori. Think about the name Hawaii.
