What is your favourite tech in this video? Let us know 👇
UPDATE: 25 April 2024. Since publishing this video there have been some questions and comments regarding the Elitewheels hub. There has since been a statement from Elitewheels regarding this product > www.elite-wheels.com/company-news/investigation-into-patent-issues-regarding-the-drive-helixs-helical-dual-ratchet-system/

It would have been the Qvist freehub, sadly I just have seen a chinese ripoff of their idea. Lewis brakes steal most design from Trickstuff, now this company is stealing from Qvist....
This is why there's 0 chinese part on my bike. I prefer people who create to people who steal

Not sure how it would work in the UK or EU, but I am pretty sure that in the US that plastic bike while it is using recycled plastic would require paying to get rid of it unfortunately. I am not certain that the powers that be would buy into the recycling of something so large. Just like you have to pay to recycle a computer or a bottle, I can see having to pay to recycle that. If it takes off, I can even see having to pay to purchase it like what we call CRV.

The Igus bike reminds massively of the old Volvo Itera Cambridge yummy mummies used to ride when I was a kid before Raleigh invented the gravel bike with the Pioneer which didn't fade and go all strange.
Cool to see Igus doing something market visible. They have always done interesting and high quality stuff on the proprietary engineering supply side. Used lots of their bits at TVR for hinges, linear actuators and sliders in things like electric window mechs and throttle linkages.
The bike's driveline and wheel hub parts probably came straight out of their own catalogue!

With plastic bikes you must keep in mind the material decomposes quite quickly (within a couple of years) because of evaporation of the plastisizer and the impact of UV light that both make the material brittle. Perhaps professor Ollie can spend some time on this in a video.

I want to express my disappointment regarding CGN Tech promoting the Elite freehub design that bears a striking resemblance to the innovative work pioneered by the German start-up, Qvist. As cycling enthusiasts, we value authenticity, craftsmanship, and respect for intellectual property rights. Qvist’s freehub design represents a leap forward in efficiency, durability, and elegance. It embodies the spirit of true innovation, and its creators deserve recognition for their hard work.
However, seeing what appears to be a direct imitation of Qvist’s design raises concerns. As a community, we thrive when we celebrate originality and uphold the principles of creativity. By promoting products that may infringe on copyrights or mimic existing innovations, we inadvertently undermine the very essence of engineering excellence. I understand that the cycling industry is vast, with countless products flooding the market. Still, I implore GCN Tech to exercise due diligence in vetting the designs you feature. I hope that future content aligns with the values we hold dear.

What if Qvist has licensed their free hub design to other brands, such as ELITE or the patent is not valid for some reason that we don't know? ELITE is a big company, not a shady manufacturer. I don't think they would take this kind of risk.

Well.. now we know there is a patent issue. What bugs me is how quickly people are making judgement and assumptions on Chinese companies and the xenophobic spirit underlying this behaviour. I have no doubt the qvist team has done a great innovative product that is patented or currently into a patent process. And I have no doubt elite has been honest in the development of their products and patent process (they apparently own some patent for this design. Two similar designs that appear at the same time from other parts of the world are far from rare. There have been a lot of designs and tech invented by several people at the same time in the world. The phone, light bulbs are a good example. Now it is a job for IP lawyers...

In the 80s, there was a bicycle brand, Itera, in Sweden that made bicycles in plastic. Most of it was made of plastic, even the wheels, cranks and handlebars were made of plastic. Heavy as few and flexed like a sheet of paper.

There was a time in the USA where things came in metal cans, glass bottles, and paper; people got fresh food, dairy, and beverages within their townships.
Now the oceans and seas are full of crap that doesn't biodegrade in half a million years. People eat food that spent a month on a ship from the other side of the planet, and a lot of food ingredients could be made into the packaging it's wrapped in. And we're supposedly "innovative and green." How about that 3,300 acres of solar panels busted by a hail storm in TX that's filling the water table with toxic chemicals?
