    We got a similar looking bus in Copenhagen. On Bus line 3A. Two electric buses are currently running as a test for future buses. They make a good ride on a bumpy road! :D

    Good idea the Bus does not need such a big battery if it can keep topping up.

    This bus sounds really cool. I guess this is kind of like a "pantographless trolleybus" if you will.

    I guess this is the closest we'll ever get to seeing a trolleybus revival! Wouldn't it be a twist of fate if these ended up displaces all diesel buses, the very vehicles that saw off the 1st generation f trolleybuses in this country. 😊

      Jay Jay Trolleybuses are better than those buses... cheaper, reliable, fastest and not so heavy.

      And don't forget an unending supply of power and heat. Still got trackless trolleys in Cambridge, Massachusetts due to the Harvard square subway and having to use a left hand door. Diesel buses only have doors on the right side. And at this time most of the buses now run on CNG ( compressed natural gas )
      Now every bus garage has been equipped with a CNG storage tanks filling station and compressor's to take natural gas from its vapor state and compress it to a liquid state to be pumped into a buses storage tanks on the roof of the bus.
      I prefer Trackless Trolleys. One reason the MTA serving Boston got rid of trackless trolleys as they performed poorly in winter snow and ice. When I was riding a trackless trolley in Somervile, Massachusetts it couldn't climb winter hill. I quickly discovered why. The old MTA to save money was buying slicks for the rear axle on trackless trolleys which was solid tire's with no tread at all. Worked fine except in below zero winter weather. Regular threaded tire's cost more money so to save money they used recaps with no tread at all. Soon as the snow and ice melted they were fine again but in a storm they weren't going anywhere fast. When they converted to diesel buses from trackless trolleys there operating cost more than tripled because electricity is so inexpensive.
      I've sat on trackless trolleys in a major northeaster snow storm reading a book nice and warm and also been on a diesel bus that got cold with no heat within 10 minutes after it stopped moving. Detroit Diesels were notorious for running cold due to needing the thermostat changed. Electric heat is quiet and comfortable.
      Dayton, Ohio has been using trackless trolleys since the early 1920's and continues to use them today in 2018.

    They have the same bus (but they're older generation, they're Volvo 7900 PHEV) running in Hamburg, Germany. They were delivered in 2014 and have unit numbers 1491 through 1493, operated by Hamburger Hochbahn AG. Search for them on line 109 between Hauptbahnhof/ZOB and U Alsterdorf. They had to rebuild both stations to build the charging station.

  • @tomjohnson9730

    I like the concept. However, we need to know: (a) How far can they travel on one charge? (b) How long does it take to charge up?

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot depends on the capacity of the power storage medium - batteries come in different ratings which mean that the range per charge and charge durations can vary. 7-10 km of wire free travel seems to be the average.

  • @sonicboy678
    @sonicboy678 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I hope the range on this bus is better than what Volvo has in North America (Nova LFSe, with a range of 25 miles/40 kilometers, well behind the competition).

    As an ex bus driver, I bet these are nice to drive too. I'm going to suggest to our council (Bournemouth), that they petition Yellow Buses to invest in this technology. Bournemouth, despite being by the sea, is known for poor air quality at times.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bournemouth also used to have a trolleybus system.
      This was the only British location where I travelled on a trolleybus in normal daily service, I was a young boy and when I learnt that we (as a family group) were going to catch a bus I made a fuss because I wanted to travel on a bus which had two arms on its roof!

    what about induction charging at the terminus points? the bus stands? I feel that'd be less prone to failure and vandalism

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know the full facts but I've heard people speak badly about induction - both the route 69 induction trial in London and trials in Holland.
      The problems in London could just be that the bus people are pro-diesel and anti-electric, and having seen off the trams and trolleybuses they do not want electric to come back via another route.

    • @sonicboy678
      @sonicboy678 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming that's true, it's worth a facepalm.
      Diesel buses are noisy, create notable air pollution, have difficulty with slopes, have low fuel efficiency, and require more frequent maintenance. (Yes, I'm aware that some engines are not as loud as others, and I know about the improvements in fuel efficiency and air pollution.) Shifting to electric buses is a change to sustainability, something far more important than the sound of one's favorite powertrain.

  • @Steven_Rowe
    @Steven_Rowe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Are they really zero emmision and clean. It all depends on where the electricity is generated.
    Is the future battey powered buses???
    Yes trolleybuses had issues but batteries have a life span, are expensive and need to be disposed off, recyvcled what ever.

  • @roboftherock

    I noticed that this vehicle produced as much vibration noise as its diesel counterparts when travelling over badly maintained roads. That also occurred on the trolleybuses that ran in both Glasgow and Belfast, so until we get really good surfaced roads, we will still have to put up with noisy interiors.

    Back in the old day we had trams they converted them to trolleybuses as they were more flexible.
    Then they went probably due to the oil companies.
    Now itx the green 21st century.
    So now we want battery buses which use expensive batteries and as we know, batteries wear out.
    We dont want trolley buses, yet at the same time putting in trams is mow the thing to do.
    Well trams must be much more costly than trolleybuses and i wonder why things are done.
    Who makes he decisions and on what basis.
    Is it all about doing what others do, or what is trendy.
    The city of Wellington in NZ had trolleybuses till 2017.
    They were silent and didnt polute yet they are gone.
    Some will say they were expensive and i wonder if this is the case the. why eceryone seems to want light rail which is more expensive..
    I wonder do people who make these executive decisions actually know what they are doing and why.
    I honestly feel they dont know the difference between shit and clay

      I very much agree with your closing comment! I think its all about overhead wires, which is the wrong way to look at things as overhead wires reduce urban air pollution so save lives. Batteries are potential fire hazards - especially Lithium - Ion batteries.

      I did not realise that there are other channels which only use on-screen text
      I decided to not do voice overs because I often make the films at night and do not want to disturb people who are asleep
      Also, its easier for people for whom English is their second language and it solved the issue of regional accents

    Wonderful! Had to turn the volume right down to zero though every time that awful music came on. Our 'orrible diesel buses sound better than that music and I hate the way they sound. Can't beat an old Bristol R.E. or something similar.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Electric is the future... eventually people will not want to be near anything diesel - because of the harmful waste gases.
      In the longer term I think that buses and trams will be replaced by mag-lev technology. First however we need to learn how to control magnetics in a way which negates gravity. This will also end issues related to PM10 etc pollutants from rubber tyre scrub.

      Some battery types do not use harmful chemicals, they also pose less of a fire hazard, but capacitors are even better because they last the lifetime of the bus. However their energy density is much lower - which means that the bus would need an energy boost much more frequently.
