I'm fairly sure the engine brake is for slowing down on a continuous downward slope to help maintain a lower speed and not cook the brakes, causing a horrific accident.
It can be, but the engine brake shuts off the engine and stops fuel going in therefore is more economical. Also it saves brake wear and tyre ware from harsh braking. Especially in the UK brakes over heating isn't really an issue for the most part and you have to remember going downhill using the engine brake you're only braking 2 wheels of the unit which can cause you to slide more easily and jackknife so it's best to use the engine brake with some brake so the trailer wheels are also slowing
Any Volvo newer than 2005 with automatics have the Eco/Power button That's because when Volvo made the I-shift gearbox, they wanted it to be suitable for different types of loads and conditions It also has a service mode button on the back of the selector. That's for when your gearbox malfunctions and you need to drive it somewere safe
Hey there, Just saying Scania has a 770hp V8 truck with 3,700NM of torque :) and I-shift is slower then Opticruise - making Scania the winner (at least for now) Scania and Volvo are constantly fighting over the title for the brand that manufacture the strongest truck :) 19:20 and next time switch the gearbox to power mode, the E on the left bottom side indicates that you were on eco :)
I hope Matt could do a Scania 770 vs Volvo 750. It would be interesting I think. Also I would like to see a drag race with more weight than 44 tons, but since it's the legal limit in most European countries.
17:20 I can count 6 parts we make at work, stuff I've packed into pallets straight from the press, and I can see 7 at 18:12. Kinda cool to see where they end up, otherwise I have no idea what the use for them are.
Gotta get Matt to review a American Truck like a Kenworth or something. Here in some states its legal for us to drive the same speed as cars, up to 80 mph, although most trucks are limited to 65-75 mph.
Very nice test. When I've had check my volvo 460 with 28200kg Dmc it was 44000kg. Volvo 460 done 0-50miles per hour in 53s. When apparently volvo 460 I save did 51s. What I noticed that 750 its changing gears very early. The 50 get in 12 gear when easly could do in 11 gear. I belive that this time could me much better in manual mode.
How about drag races amongst latest trucks like the scania V8 770hp 730hp against Volvo 750hp 700 hp iveco Benz and so on,we would love see videos like that and this is a wonderful video I have enjoyed it big ups matt👍
The FH16 750 was my office for two years, driving all over Scandinavia, hauling everything from waste to fish to machines (you name it, I've hauled it). Up to gross weight 50 MT winter and summer. Now the newest version is the FH16 780! New design too. Now I drive Volvo buses...
Those front aerofoils are to direct air flow across the side of the cab to keep the spray from the sides of the tyres from crapping up the side windows & mirrors !
1100 / 200 = 5.5 5.5 x 2 = 11 Driving that distance you would have to spend a total of 11 hours at the charger + whatever time it would take to do the actual driving. I cant see how a reputable truck manufacturer would ever make a semi-truck with those specs, it makes no sense whatsoever. It could work for a distrubution truck or postal service, but not as a semi as those are pretty much only ever used for long-range delivery.
@@josviersel I'll believe the Tesla/Musk hype machine when i see a couple of real world reviews, also, took them some time to deliver 2 trucks to Pepsi. Tesla still haven't got "Full self driving" that's been touted and is now getting sued over it.

Trucks may not be as exciting as cars for obvious reasons but they command (and deservedly so) massive respect for the (automotive/mechanical) engineering challenge and marvel (if I may say so) that they are. Not to mention the value they add and how indispensable they are to society. Very cool and thankful to have Martin from Volvo. He did speak. He wasn't 'silent' by any stretch of the imagination but I still would have liked to hear more from him. Anyway, Great video.
I do love the Volvo I drive. Brillint trucks. The update that they have done on the infotainment system is very welcome. I'd love to see more of these reviews.
Highly appreciate the quality content you are creating throughout this episode. But, what I have quite noticed and at the same time feel sorry for that whenever Mr. Matthew reviews such type of a vehicle he never gets informed about the practice of how to appropriately climb outside of it which is quite an essential piece of knowledge to be acquired.
Almost didn't watch this. Would've been sorry! It was really good. Thanks, Mat. In a few short years, the battery tech will make this work better than the best today. Higher energy density and capacity, much quicker charging, not volatile, lighter, cheaper, 100% recyclable. Applications like these should've been focused on first! It makes perfect sense, specially because of the flat torque delivery. Some day, no more trucking chains in the far-right-hand lane in the mountains!
My 8 year old budget DAF has lane assist and radar cruise control 😂 but that BIG FH16 does look impressive! although I drive a truck I'm not really all that interested in most of them, but when Volvo bring out something like that I must say that I get jealous!
Electric is definitely good for inter county deliveries for many logistic companies but the Non-electric is seriously good for continental deliveries. nice to see Volvo is taking the electric challenge. Tesla should not be the only one in electric truck industry.
DAF also have the electric CF range currently on the road which are similar in stats to the volvo here, and like volvo are releasing their big boys next year with the electric XF range on to the road. Lots of european truck manufactuers currently working on getting electric or biofuel trucks out on roads which is amazing. In america Freightliner are working on getting an electric cascadia on the road. Thankfully tesla isn't the only one doing it because they've never exactly been proven to be honest about their numbers and the semi is hideous, I know I wouldn't want to have to stare at that thing while stuck in traffic. Tesla are all about hype though and they've really hit on that marketing a big semi truck to lots of people that haven't driven a HGV in their life, have no plans to, aren't in the trucking industry and because they've only heard about tesla semis they're up on their high horses screeching about how tesla is changing the world. Meanwhile people that know about trucking know what's available, what's coming up and also knows that tesla will certainly sell some but they're not going to be taking over the trucking industry. As you said, electric isn't anywhere near ready to take on the long-haul market but in a lot of europe there's so many companies making round trips that are less than 100 miles and electric does go a long way to fill that role.
It'll be interesting to see how much the range of the electric trucks improve when we start seeing the effects of the overhead charging cables that are being trialed. They have a long way to go before they could ever compete with continental deliveries, but if an electric truck could do a hundred miles in and around the streets of London, not facing any emissions charges, then hop on the motorway and charge while driving until it gets to the next city.. It could be a viable option for logistic companies based in one country.
@@xectia sorry, they delivered two. That's nothing. Volvo is likely to deliver at the minimum hundreds if not thousands next year. Not to mention mercedes.
Retired trucker Those slabs (aerofoils) have been around for YEARS. 1 FM and 1 FH (FM is lower sighted). So obviously the airflow over each will be different. Like Alhambra to Leon estate.
I can't remember the last time I only drove 200 miles. I'm a daycabber in the US Midwest and it's not unusual to do 400 miles per day just in one state. I'd need two of these trucks for that, assuming it would actually go the full 200 miles (it won't).
Well, its not built for the American market. And its specced for the European market. And the range is certified, and it will make that with a 4 tonne load.
it's not for longer distances it's for shorter daily drives and city transports. + europ has strickt laws on how long you can drive and when you need to take a brake. you have 4,5hours of drive time before you need to take a 45min brake (or you can split it and take a 15min brake during those 4,5hours and then only need 30min when you hit 4,5h) then you get another 4,5hours. you can get 1hour extra drive time if needed i belive 2x per week or something like that. but then you still need that 45min brake after 4,5h before you can do the last 1hour. like 9/10 times i have seen sleeper cabs they are just sleeper because why not. they rarely actually get used as such unless we talking the bigger FH which is used for longer distance transports. here in sweden it's up to 74tons and 25meters long. we also got trucks with special permits that do 100ton hauls of logs. road train in other words
its supposed to be a short distance delivery vehicle. in europe we daily drive trucks arround 800km a day or 500 miles. and they usually carry bigger fuel tanks. like a weeks worth of fuel. arround 1250liters normaly wich would usually get you over 2000miles or 3200km on a full load

Especially in the UK brakes over heating isn't really an issue for the most part and you have to remember going downhill using the engine brake you're only braking 2 wheels of the unit which can cause you to slide more easily and jackknife so it's best to use the engine brake with some brake so the trailer wheels are also slowing
@@AdmiralDantheman Fair enough, thanks for your input!
The FH was in eco mode as indicated on the dash! My older 700.hp has a power mode and a HD mode for road train set up.
Any Volvo newer than 2005 with automatics have the Eco/Power button
That's because when Volvo made the I-shift gearbox, they wanted it to be suitable for different types of loads and conditions
It also has a service mode button on the back of the selector. That's for when your gearbox malfunctions and you need to drive it somewere safe
Drive it in manual mode to get all the power
Hey there, Just saying Scania has a 770hp V8 truck with 3,700NM of torque :)
and I-shift is slower then Opticruise - making Scania the winner (at least for now)
Scania and Volvo are constantly fighting over the title for the brand that manufacture the strongest truck :)
19:20 and next time switch the gearbox to power mode, the E on the left bottom side indicates that you were on eco :)
The Scania Truck is as heavy as it actually get.
Yeah I was thinking Scania had a 770 too....
@@RichN22 To be fair, that is quite recent. Give them a bit of time for Scania to produce decent numbers to lend them one.
@@dbclass4075 that's a drag race I'd like to see....
Bout opticruise vs I shift, you are so wrong, it cant get worse
I hope Matt could do a Scania 770 vs Volvo 750. It would be interesting I think. Also I would like to see a drag race with more weight than 44 tons, but since it's the legal limit in most European countries.
max legal weight in most EU countries is 56 tons
That guy clinging onto his seatbelt like Mat is going to crash into something😂😂😂
Mat still hasn't learned to get out of a truck in the correct way! So funny!
What?
You guys seriously have to make another channel called 'Truckwow' and add your truck drag races on that channel as well. I would be keen, who else?
They'll make more money putting on this channel
@@I_am_Jesus_though maybe 2023 i think.
I swear at 1.56 Matt turns into Alan Partridge 😂😂
The more I watch the more I see Alan 😂
17:20 I can count 6 parts we make at work, stuff I've packed into pallets straight from the press, and I can see 7 at 18:12. Kinda cool to see where they end up, otherwise I have no idea what the use for them are.
I've always loved Trucks since I was a kid not gonna lie. I love Truck reviews 🤣
Absolutely do more of these. Loved the truck, loved Martin, this is fascinating.
Mat thank you so much for this insane video!
Need also a review about Age Solo Licorne.
Every f#cking video
4:48 - Holy Shit, the Warranty will expire before the Bonnet gets fully opened for the first time ever in the truck's lifespan.
Should have put the FH in Power mode instead of Economy - square button behind the gearshifter! Makes a difference
Yes, in milage😅
12:57 as a truck driver, I can confirm that this is made exactly for what you said.
😂
Gotta get Matt to review a American Truck like a Kenworth or something. Here in some states its legal for us to drive the same speed as cars, up to 80 mph, although most trucks are limited to 65-75 mph.
With 3 trailers...was fun times,trying to stop :)
Or they can just take an old Volvo from the 1970... same thing.
As a HGV Driver I very much enjoy the tractor unit reviews plus FH for the Win 🏆
I’ve just passed my full HGV license so this was entertaining to watch 😅
nice video Mat, truck driving is my dream job man this video have been very helpful to me thank you again .down from South africa 🇿🇦
Really happy with this video! I love Volvo trucks! 😊
This truck looked quite overpowered.
He was using eco mode 🤣🤣
How about drag races amongst latest trucks like the scania V8 770hp 730hp against Volvo 750hp 700 hp iveco Benz and so on,we would love see videos like that and this is a wonderful video I have enjoyed it big ups matt👍
Matt should come to Australia and drag race and brake test road trains hahaha
The FH16 750 was my office for two years, driving all over Scandinavia, hauling everything from waste to fish to machines (you name it, I've hauled it). Up to gross weight 50 MT winter and summer. Now the newest version is the FH16 780! New design too. Now I drive Volvo buses...
Those front aerofoils are to direct air flow across the side of the cab to keep the spray from the sides of the tyres from crapping up the side windows & mirrors !
Finally I found the right comment, I would've said it myself if I couldn't find it in the comments. Cheers !!
Nice review Matt 👌,,,, respect for truck drivers,,,, hat's off 💯
So could someone work out how many weeks it would take the electric truck to cover the 1100 mile range of the diesel?
1100 / 200 = 5.5
5.5 x 2 = 11
Driving that distance you would have to spend a total of 11 hours at the charger + whatever time it would take to do the actual driving.
I cant see how a reputable truck manufacturer would ever make a semi-truck with those specs, it makes no sense whatsoever. It could work for a distrubution truck or postal service, but not as a semi as those are pretty much only ever used for long-range delivery.
If you only do channel crossing’s the 1100 miles would take the same amount of weeks…
(Dover-Calais)
Answer is Tesla Semi will do it in one day. Volvo have a long way to go to catch Tesla.
@@josviersel I'll believe the Tesla/Musk hype machine when i see a couple of real world reviews, also, took them some time to deliver 2 trucks to Pepsi.
Tesla still haven't got "Full self driving" that's been touted and is now getting sued over it.
@@josviersel the Tesla semi ain't doing shit. it's a massive failure always has ben always will be. Tesla ain't as great as people think. cheap parts shitty service, no experience in the car industry or truck industry, 50% of their products are straight lies. shit musk said he could do years ago but yet to this day has not delivered on.
Matt and his iconic way of getting out of trucks 😂😂
The trucking business is not a drag race. It's about net cost of moving mass on a schedule.
I have never seen in my life that anyone get out of the truck like that. Even my grandmother got out of the truck more normally than this 😢
You are right 😂😂
Why was your grandmother in a truck?....don't answer plz
Best truck in the world fast, reliable and powerful build with care and love just like the Swedes
Congratulations on becoming TruckWow
Agree.
I'd love to see more of these reviews.
yeah we need more truck reviews
Review also about Gnade Esperanza Carwow.
12:55 seriously?😂😂 That is one mind blowing truck though
6:10 anyone else thought the cabin was about to fall?
Almost didn't watch this. Would've been sorry! It was really good. Thanks, Mat. In a few short years, the battery tech will make this work better than the best today. Higher energy density and capacity, much quicker charging, not volatile, lighter, cheaper, 100% recyclable. Applications like these should've been focused on first! It makes perfect sense, specially because of the flat torque delivery. Some day, no more trucking chains in the far-right-hand lane in the mountains!
After all this time watching Matt, I had no idea I needed to know these trucks exist...👀
My 8 year old budget DAF has lane assist and radar cruise control 😂 but that BIG FH16 does look impressive! although I drive a truck I'm not really all that interested in most of them, but when Volvo bring out something like that I must say that I get jealous!
Someone should've told Matt that the bottom grill can be turned into a step😂
This why I love Volvo Trucks and Also Buses because everything is luxurious as well as perfect.
I love the features of this truck, only thing the Freightliner I've driven have over this is more space.
Missed opportunity on "and you're watching truckwow". Come on production team :D
It could be a viable option for logistic companies based in one country.
to be fair, tesla isnt in the truck industry yet since they haven't delivered anything
@@littlehippo5004 they have tho?
@@xectia sorry, they delivered two. That's nothing. Volvo is likely to deliver at the minimum hundreds if not thousands next year. Not to mention mercedes.
I’m truck driver myself god I miss my FH ok it’s gas unit and comfy as well, driving few old Scania P at the moment love the review Matt.
Imagine the size of the pistons, cylinders, engine block and all the engine parts of the 16.1-litre straight-six twin-turbo engine of that Volvo FH16!
Insane🤔
The battery issue is where the Siemens E-Highway system comes in, because it basically adapts train pantograph technology for roadway usage.

@@zaarkeru3391 4 tons? Lmao.
@@americansmark 40* tonnes xD
it's not for longer distances it's for shorter daily drives and city transports.
That air duster is for cleaning your shoes when you get into the truck.. in NA we have it right next to the driver seat so you can clean shoes and dirt doesnt get in your truck ✌
Where are you from?
In Northern Western Australia some of the Volvos tow 200 tonnes of iron ore from the mines. I personally worked on the Volvo's as a diesel mechanic and they are a serious truck.
Am I the only one who's really unnerved by the Volvo guy keeping his seat belt pulled away? oO
Someone should teach mat how to get out if a truck

Come on Matt, you gotta get your hands on a Tesla semi truck. Slower then it’s ice counterpart??? 2 hours to charge for a 200 mile pitiful range??? This thing is a proof of technology at most. The Tesla semi is a true step up from any semi truck that exists currently
