That was a really good phone from xiaomi. Too bad they discontinued this series after A3 bcz they couldn't get enough profit by making stock androids and trying to kill all the existing ones.
It's because of how terrible they handled Android One devices. This A1 is literally the only completely fine model from their Android One lineup. The A2 had worse camera system and dropped the headphone jack, which was actually quite good on the A1. Then the A3 is surely the worst out of the bunch, with Android 11 update literally bricking the phone and rendering it unusable. It really seems as if ever new generation is actually worse than the predecessor. On top of that, their supposed purpose of being Android One devices, which is very fast and stable software updates that's just second to Google's Pixels, is not delivered at all. Heck, even Sony's non-Android One mid range devices during that time were updated much quicker still, which begs the validity of the Mi A series as Android One devices when they don't even comply to the bare minimum standards of Android One program. Nokia just did Android One devices much better overall.

You can also lodge a dispute with AliExpress prior to confirming receipt and that you’re happy with the item. I bought some AirPod Pro clones from one of their sellers. The right one only had minimal volume and I was sent a replacement individual right pod all the way to the UK. This sorted the issue although it took some time and communication was a little tricky. On a £30 set of headphones that ended up being pretty good I’d say that’s actually GOOD customer service and that AliExpress is ok if you’re careful

Aliexpress parts are cheaper than OEM, but they dont last / damage your phone otherwise. Got a charging port assembly for Asus ZB601KL and it destroyed my battery and mic after few months. DONT GO CHEAP !
Some of them (only HQ ones) are rembranded OEM for licencing reasons. But yeah, only go for them as long there is no OEM parts available. Never go for cheap parts, those are killing your phone.
Why all this disrespect to AliExpress? It's the seller's fault to promote a low quality part as "premium", and what is cool with aliexpress is that you can choose a reputable seller with decent quality parts. By far, I've bought three phones off this platform, two new and one refurbished. The ref phone was in "like new" condition, while costing less than a used one off Ebay or Facebook marketplace. I'm not here defending AliExpress, the expreience is not always positive, and some deals on local marketplaces or Ebay are still better than from China, but I think it deserves more respect.
That's what I've just experienced. Recently my Redmi 4X's screen cracked cause I dropped it on the corner. Tried to get a replacement screen said to be original, only to have the navigation buttons not working from screen off(need to touch the screen once before the navbar is able to work again). Also my Z3 Compact's screen is in condition where touch is broken in some places. I would love to have those repaired. But with parts circling around are mostly fake with questionable quality being sold as 'original', I would better off buying used phone and have it running till it breaks down, hopefully in a year or two, which is why I'm now running used XZ1 with white spots on the screen and lower capacity battery, otherwise still perfectly functional.
I have a Redmi Note 4X and getting replacement screens are hard...
3 ปีที่แล้ว
You'd be better off finding a donor phone with dead internals. The 4X and the Z3 compact are getting rarer.
3 ปีที่แล้ว
I just checked 4Xs, locally (Serbia) they're sold for like $40 for a wonky one but with a good, original screen, and a good working one for $60. That's just a tiny bit more than what replacement screens of unknown origin are going for.
@ That was what I was going for my 4X, but couldn't find any donor candidate with justified pricing. So I ended up going for screen replacement only which proved to be a bad decision. It costed me about US$ 34.5(screen, battery, and power/volume flexible cable, all highly questionable quality). As for Z3 Compact, it was once having temperature and random reboot issues, although it seems to be working fine now. Hence I went for a used XZ1 which I got for about US$ 50(I'm in Indonesia btw). It's the biggest phone I've ever had and obviously not comfortable to use. I'm still tempted for XZ1 Compact but it's really hard to find a good one.
It is funny how people pay rock bottom prices for Chinese products and expect them to be the highest quality. If you want quality, even in China, you need to pay the fair price.
True. I bought a screen for one of the broken phones I had from AliExpress. Didn't go with the cheapest, but also stayed within reasonable price. The screen came and looked very good with no issues.
Buying parts based on the item listing alone is a terrible idea on these online marketplaces, you need to look for reputable seller/shops and browse their parts. Original parts that isn't new old stock for a old phone like the A1 is hard to come by, and it doesn't help that Xiaomi doesn't seem to provide original parts easily.
Some cheap seller put keywords like Premium and Original just to lure some buyers in, only to realize the parts they received was bad quality. Parts for Chinese phones that you can buy are probably 80% fake/remanufactured most of the time. And remanufactured parts vary in quality a lot, some batteries are actually remanufactured by the original OEM, you just need to look at user review pictures to confirm it. I haven't seen a display replacement that is made by the original OEM that's being sold, but there are always some good sellers that actually source parts from original OEMs, you just need to look for them.
The hardest part about Aliexpress is actually getting the delivery. I am still waiting for a bunch of adhesive strips for Apple Watches. And the last batch was junk, they didn't fit properly.
I repaired my mother's Xiaomi Note 5 using AliExpress parts without much difficulty. The screen was really good and cheap and still works years later. iFixit is too damn expensive. This phone on the other hand seems so difficult to repair.
I honestly have never ever have had bad replacement parts from aliexpress, i buy jk oled screens from there and they don’t disappoint, suggesting people to stay away from sites like AliExpress just because you don’t do proper research is pretty stupid, i like your videos but wtf?
I have personally had reasonable experencr from Ali Express but have only ordered a select few After reading huge numbers of comments. Two keyone screens perfect to original. Same for some internal components worked fine. One xiomi screen was not great colours but was advertised as lower quality LCD. Other aftermakret looked very close to oem. Xiaomi is odd as a company. Selling from premium flag ships, high spec budgets and visual clones.
I got a Asus Zenfone 5, literally couldn't find and display or battery any ware then AliExpress. Got good display very great colors had no issues. It all depends on the seller and there reviews. I personally never had a issue buying on Ali. Some pieces just can't find anywhere else.
If you have a hotplate, moly string and LOCA glue, you could swap the old LCD to the new glass, be careful with the backlit, LOCA glue can ruin your backlit if you are not careful

@@immanuelhermon You just need to use your eyeballs. The screen he got had no chance of being original and that was clear from the listing. There are original screens, they are just more expensive. The deal about aliexpress is that you need a IQ above zero to order on it.
I don't think it's fair to trash AliExpress for the outcome here, you can totally get good parts from there. You have to spend the time researching the price for an OEM part from different sellers, check reviews etc but it's not hard to get good prices and high quality parts. Dispute system is also very generous. Idk finding local or "trusted" OEM part distributors (eg iFixit) adds its own tax which makes repair overly expensive sometimes

Great video though.
I'm using Xiaomi Mi 9SE, and RedMi Note 5 AI, and gave my 5 year old RedMi Note 3 to my mum.
Still going strong.
Just change the battery.
The only thing I think the screen could be used for since it’s cheap is a test screen
I agree, if they advertised it as a test screen, then that would be the screen I use to get files off of a broken Xaomi phone imo
@@NigelMelanisticSmith Heck, that quality is far worse than a Redmi Note 3 Pro one.
There's nothing wrong with aliexpress itself - just shop around and check your reviews. I'm guessing the shipping alone must be trash to Australia though. That screen is garbage lmao
On a £30 set of headphones that ended up being pretty good I’d say that’s actually GOOD customer service and that AliExpress is ok if you’re careful
this was a legendary phone. This had fantastic hardware and software at that time for the price it offered

ayy watching on a MI A1 right now! a decent phone even today, but shows its age.. really need a custom rom on it.. and a new battery..
I am still using Mi A1 from 2017. It's awesome
i didnt expect Hugh Jeffreys including my last phone👌

This man has repaired all the phones that I have had
This is the phone your mom buys you when you ask for an iphone but she's really cheap
Well, I just got a new battery for this phone, toolkit arrives today. All because of the damn pentalobe screws. Otherwise I would've changed it way back when.
This video really helps a lot, since you go step by step when dismantling the phone.
Love the content
Wow, never been so early. It looked like a 6s
That would’ve been the goal with the design, to copy the iPhone. The MI 8 is a carbon copy of the iPhone X if you haven’t heard of it

Many years ago I built a iPhones 5c out of after market parts from eBay. It lot of fettling to get the parts to fit correctly. It worked well and my friend used it for around 3 years before he lost it.
Finally Xiaomi, my fave brand of mobiles. Along with the iPhone XR, my Redmi Note 10 Pro is the best partner I could ever dream of.

What an amazing restoration!
Here in Malaysia, aside from Aliexpress, which I have some bad experiences too, I prefer ordering from Shopee or Lazada. Even they are also from China, they got a good quality product, way better than Aliexpress.
@I killed that beard guy Yup, it's legit and so far, I never had any issue with their product & their deliveries. Maybe their website only available in the Southeast Asia region, that's why you never heard of it.
@@lrc3847 I bought the top of the line part they sold, still it screwed me up 😅

There are good AliExpress parts you just have to look harder
who the hell is going to order 4 different screens to try and figure out which one is good? this advice sucks for anyone that's not a repair shop.
@@matyiii I sorted by stars and read the reviews, bought a screen and it's 10/10. Did I have order 4 different screens? No. Just look at the reviews
Got tons of good parts off AliExpress myself... Seems like this was just to bash china e commerce
You'd be better off finding a donor phone with dead internals. The 4X and the Z3 compact are getting rarer.
First xiaomi phone on your channel
It is funny how people pay rock bottom prices for Chinese products and expect them to be the highest quality. If you want quality, even in China, you need to pay the fair price.
True. I bought a screen for one of the broken phones I had from AliExpress. Didn't go with the cheapest, but also stayed within reasonable price. The screen came and looked very good with no issues.
exactly
Hi Hugh l love the videos you make have a great day xx
I doubt xiaomi put pentalobe screws on the outside for any other reason than to copy Apple, as with the design

Selling from premium flag ships, high spec budgets and visual clones.
iPhone design + Android operating system = Xiaomi.

It's not a bug, it's a feature, you have a privacy screen now :)

Hugh Jeffry- “hold my isopropyl alcohol I'll fix it wait”
Next day- “phone ready to use just like new one”
It's not a bug it's a feature! Not being able to be seen at an angle = screen privacy.

Oh I wonder where the parts you get from other websites are manufactured.
Gets it on Amazon, shipped from China
OMG i had one of those like 4 years ago, since then i started to buy just Xiaomi smartphones, best experience for me.
This is why you always go for genuine, good quality parts, rather than some random parts from AliExpress. But hey, the phone now works nicely.
Well done sir and way to go telling it like it is!
I fix all my phones ONLY with Aliexpress parts for years now 😂
Me too.
You just need to know a good seller
@@immanuelhermon can you guys recommend a good seller please? And do you buy single screens or lots?
@@immanuelhermon You just need to use your eyeballs. The screen he got had no chance of being original and that was clear from the listing. There are original screens, they are just more expensive. The deal about aliexpress is that you need a IQ above zero to order on it.
@@basileus9343
This screen he bought.
I got plenty of screens that was original
I don't think it's fair to trash AliExpress for the outcome here, you can totally get good parts from there. You have to spend the time researching the price for an OEM part from different sellers, check reviews etc but it's not hard to get good prices and high quality parts. Dispute system is also very generous. Idk finding local or "trusted" OEM part distributors (eg iFixit) adds its own tax which makes repair overly expensive sometimes
I have noticed that most tech channels just love to trash on aliexpress by focusing on the chapest low quality part of it
“what could go wrong” Everything Hugh absolutely everything 🤣
Two years ago Xiaomis display from Aliexpress were as good as the original one but now that´s not the case and now most of them are yellow screen with a noticeable touch latency. This is why i want to buy something to change only the touch in order to keep an original display with a decent image quality.
am still using one with the andriod 9 have it since it came out and havent use any case nor screen protector for about 2 years and it has received many drop and screen is still without a scratch.. its a tank.. best feature is the IR use it has a universal remote for tvs and ac and cable box lol
Been waiting for this video for one week 😄😄😄
I ordered two different Displays on AliExpress, both arrived in 2 Weeks and the quality was good, as well as the price.
I used to have the 4X got parts on AliExpress was a super pleasant experience 🙏👍, I think it depends which seller like all similar sites
The water damage indicator is pinkish. Probably what killed the battery
I have done screen replacements for Xiaomi phones with amoled screens from Aliexpress and all without problems.
Good replacement displays are not cheap I found out.
But indeed it can be a gamble.
Too harsh on AliExpress imo. For many people it's the only channel to get spare parts because they are impossible to find locally. Yes you get a turd once in a while but in my experience that doesn't happen very often.
Hugh: aliexpress bad
also hugh: buys the cheapest components available in the marketplace

Put sticky tape on a cracked screen to make the suction cup grab the screen properly, saves having to rely completely on pry tools which could damage the internals 🤘
EDIT: Parcel/packing tape works best for me
Next time of suction cup doesn't work try using sticky tape on the screen to make a good seal
