    Many years ago I was given a silver vase plant. One of the first things I read about it was that "it thrives on neglect", so it does really well at my house! I have mine in an eastern window and use cactus soil. I water it when I think of it, every couple of months or so probably, and fill up the tank then. I rarely put water in the tank in between waterings. Just about every year I get a huge beautiful bloom out of it that lasts several months. I leave all of the pups attached to it and remove the older dying ones. There are three or four plants in the pot at any given time. I don't have the greenest of thumbs, but this plant has been very easy and very successful for me, and I always get excited when I see that new blossom poking it's way up from the tank.

    I loved your video, Madam! So informative and entertaining. Your passion for plants is evident and you have a way of engaging the viewers’ attention with your charisma. It felt so authentic, more like listening to a story than watching a tutorial.
    I got this plant as a gift last week and had no idea how to take care of it. So glad I came across your channel! Thank you!!! 🙏🏻💗

    I have my first bromeliad the silver vase ! I love it. The flower is now fading and I’ve been nervous what to do. Your video saved me! And seeing all your collection is inspiring me to buy more and more. Question: I would really like to see how you cut away the dead mother plant and keep the pups in the same pot. ( mines in a nice pot) thank you !!

    Hello from Northern California. I'm SO happy I found you! To finally find out what I have, and how to care for her! I bought her at a $3.oo.wilted plant sale. It had no info tags. I have had these particular Bromolaids for more than 4 years.
    The flowers are so beautiful.
    But not one of my mother plants have died. They have had beautiful flowers. Their babies have been strong and beautiful. I take them from the mother and repot them.
    But the mothers never die. They just keep giving me babies. They are happy plants.

    Thank you so much so helpful. I went to my local plant store to get help in order to plant the new little pup. They were telling me I do not need orchid potting mix or any spagnum moss they told me just to get regular dirt. They were so unhelpful did not know what they were talking about. Luckily I did my research I mixed with orchid soil plus regular. I also repotted the mother plant on their advice. Both plants are doing great!

    Hi Nell. These are such beautiful plants. I have always been a little intimidated about growing them, but I might give it a shot. Your kitty is so cute. Does he come out for awhile and then go back in? I have family who live in the desert, and you have to keep an eye on your pets because of the critters, but you no doubt already know that. Love your house plant series. :)

      I'm glad you're enjoying the series because I'm really getting into houseplant again. Aechmeas are so easy & tough too - you should give 1 a try. Oscar is 18 & loves lying in the sun. Both of my kitties go outside a couple of times a day, never after dark & only when I'm home. My garden is walled in so I'm a bit protected here. Thank you for the word of warning though! Nell

    Woman you saved my aechmea fasciata! I’ve had mine for over two years and no new blooms and wasn’t sure why the original one died and why four new ones popped up. Now I understand that was the mother and then she had 4 pups! The pups are big now so I wonder if I can still cut and repot them. I also wasn’t sure with watering, was I watering to much or too little. Thanks for the advice!!

    Got one of these and it was looking gorgeous. Started to flower and all inside facing south but not directly in window. Had only been watering at base but added some water to urn (dry climate). Repotted carefully. Assumed it hadn’t fully flowered as it had them perhaps a month didn’t think it was time yet for the flower stalk to die back. Not sure what or if did wrong (water? Burnt with light while repotting stuff outside?) but stem of flowering head fell over. Tried to gently splint it but continued to fall over in other places. Will cut main stalk and hope some pups show up. Lower leaves don’t have banding and don’t seem as robust as others. Fingers crossed!

    Hi there! Thanks for the videos. I have recently started to get into plants back around December. In January I bought the Aechmea Fasciata and I love it. But I live in South Florida and we have no winters here. I had it in my east facing balcony but I was afraid that the sun was cooking it, so I brought it indoors. I regret not seeing this video sooner. My plant is planted in regular soil, has never been fertilized and I never even knew to put the water inside the "urn" until about 5 weeks ago. Despite all this, she has been a good plant and is making 2 pups! But the flower has dried away. What I'd like to know is if I should repot this plant, even as it's on it way to dying? And I also want to know if it's ok to return it to outdoors despite the fact that it's been used to being side for about 6-7 weeks. PS, I love bromeliads, and I also have a flaming sword and another pink one, whose name I do not know.

    Just want to clarify, once my Silvervase has bloomed it's more or less on a downward spiral toward decay where it will regrow in spring off of the pups? Thanks for the video, it was super helpful.

    Hi Nell, would removing the 'pups' prevent the mother-plant from dying? My aechmea's pups is growing at an awkward angle quite distanced from the center of the pot and I was wondering whether I should repot.

    Hello Nell! I am new to plants, especially Bromeliads, this one is the one and the only bromeliad that i have, when i first picked it up, it had al these beautiful white markings like your plant does but over time all the markings have faded, do you know what could have caused this?

    Oh no Nell, I started re-potting my new aechmea plant when I heard you said not to do it!!! So i stopped and put it back in the pot with orchid bark. The flower is about a quarter in bloom. I hope I haven't killed it.
    Also, I had a bromeliad that I had gotten on clearance at Lowe's and the pups are about 5 inches, when I pulled them off there were no roots. :-( I potted them in peat moss and orchid bark. Should I do anything else?

    Hi, thank you for your video ! I recently bought an urn plant, or Achaea. The flower leans quite a bit and I was curious as to why it does. When I purchased I, from a greenhouse, she told me to water every 2 days 1/3 cup onto soil. Well it got very wet so I stopped!! Now I’m hoping it’s not ruined it’s such a gorgeous plant. Can I repot this into proper soil just to dry it out a little? I have Orchid mix and can mix with a nicer soil. So far I only have 1 dead yellow leaf. Hoping you can help me . 😊

    I started with 1 of these 6 years ago that had 4 pups. Since then I have had numerous pups, 13 that have bloomed. I have never planted any of them I keep them in a 1.6 inch basket ( air only ). This year 3 have bloomed & 8 that haven't. I leave them outside all spring & summer & bring them inside for winter. I have never fertilized them & only add water when it hasn't rained for a while. South Louisiana. P S don't discard any mother plants till they are completely dead, I put one on a compost pile just before winter & next spring found a pup on it.

    Hi Nell - new to houseplants lady and new to your channel and a fellow grew up in New Englander (Massachusetts). I enjoy your videos. I don't know if you answer questions on videos made so long ago but I have a question - and I know the answer to it is no - but I thought I'd ask it anyway. I bought a Bromeliad Achmea Silver Vase / Urn plant about a month ago, glorious pink flower blooming and all, but still a whole lot of life left on the flower (the purple inside parts hadn't quite come in yet, etc). Anyway, I forgot to refill the tank on top with water, for the last two to three days - so now that poor beautiful gorgeous flower is all brown save the very outside layers of petals on it. I could kick myself - hard - I love this plant so - and I've gone and ruined it. Anyway, is there any way to revive this flower, which has met a way too early death!!!??? Will the mom die early too, due to this monumental error on my part? The plant does have a small little pup which looks healthy still....but yikes, sigh...

    I just purchased my first bromeliad. And it's that exact pink one. I'm so scared to kill it. Lol. All my other plants are so different from it. Wish you could just come visit and teach me the ways. 😂😂😊

    Great insights which I would love your feedback on please? My first bloomed beautifully with both the darker pink and purple flowers but then eventually rotted out. Thinking I’d killed it by overwatering I bought another. BTW, I never filled the vase as you did :-0. Just small top-ups. Anyway, the second one I watered far less, with distilled water and sprayed some mist too.
    To my dismay this has also rotted out from the flower and the centre. What am I doing wrong? The second one hasn’t even been watered via the soil either. Can they be saved? Many thanks

    Great stuff! I want to get a Bromeliad so badly! I heard a rumour(?) that the cost for them has gone way up due to adverse weather wherever they come from (pardon my ignorance) but I assumed the ones for sale here in Canada were from greenhouses! I never wanted to buy ones raided from the rainforest or wherever! One reason I've always wanted a Bromeliad is because I heard they clean the air at night whereas most other plants emit oxygen during daylight hrs. Any comments? Thanks!

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Bromeliads do clean the air around them. They take in the bad & release oxygen at night, as do most other houseplants. The majority of Bromeliads (that I know anyway) in the US are grown in CA, FL & TX. Most of the propagating is done from pups. Some collectors start them from seed, some of which is collected in the rainforest. the majority of bromeliads sold in the trade are hot house grown. Nell

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dru - You're welcome. You can hold it upside down (just make sure you hold onto the root ball so it does all fall out) & empty it out that way. I find this way easier: I take it to the kitchen sink & run the water into the urn to flush it out that way. Plus, the Aechmea foliage gets a little bath which it appreciates. Hope that helps, Nell

    Hi Nell, tank you for the information on the beautiful bromeliad. I have a question, I've had mine for abouit a year and mother plant has died off and I have 3 pups now about 6-7inches, I have never repotted it, would that be the reason why the plant is not getting any bigger? Or do I need to take the pups off to help it grow bigger? Also could you do a video on how to get the pups off, I don't want to kill the pups or the mother plant it's self. Once again thank you.

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Sherry - From what I've been told, the pups actually grow faster when attached to the mother plant. It takes 3-6 years for a pup to flower, depending on the conditions. I'd be happy to do a video on removing the pups. It'll probably post in a couple of months. Nell

      Hi - You can leave it in the cactus mix which is better that all potting soil because it lessens the chance of overwatering & root rot. If you have any compost or something rich (not manure) mix a little of that in too. I always use a mixture cactus mix & orchid bark, just for future reference! Nell

    THANK YOU SO MUCH! My Bromelia has two pups they a re big already so I feel like the current mother pot is already too small for all 3 bromelias (2 growing and mother still healthy , all are big) I really dont want to separete them . Should I use a bigger pot?

    Hey Nell, I got my sister a red sword bromide plant .house warming gift while the plant was n my big ol van , I accidently gave the plant some vodka or tequila that someone left n my vehicle after a concert we went to the night before , it was n a water bottle , I thought it was pure bottle water ! Boy I was upset ! I immediately flushed it with water everywhere on the plant , do you think it's gonna survive? Feeling awful getting the plant drunk , any helpful hints ?

      Oh dear. Bromeliads don't have an extensive root system & since you flushed it out right away, it should be fine. Nell

    This plant is Brazilian but does not like humidity, this plant is not native to the Amazon but from the Atlantic Forest and in a dry region of Brazil.
