I live in Singapore, a tropical climate country(always summer) and I have some air plant. I find overnight soaking the tillandsia works very well for me. Just have to make sure the next morning shake off all the excess water, put it under the morning sun with natural breeze for about 2 to 4 hours to dry out the air plants completely before put them back to their original position or container. Then the air plant will look good without any misting for 2 weeks. My air plants are distributed into different area in the house. The tillandsia that came from dessert area or showing sign of spike or blush, I will put them at the balcony rack with morning sun and shade. Most of my air plant are in my bedroom. I have to turn on air conditioning to sleep every night because of the hot weather Singapore and pair with a humidifier, cause air conditioning make the air dry which is not good for my sensitive nose. I find that this condition is very good for my air plant(good ventilation and moisture) and they are on my side table next to the east facing window so they get the nice morning sun. Lastly, I have 3 air plant hanging on my bathroom window with shade and west sun. Everytime when I shower I will shower them as well and they will dry out with the natural ventilation and this is the only 3 airplant I do not do overnight soaking.
I've gotten all my Bromeliad's from the clearance rack at the big box stores. My friends has a tree company and brings me air plants from trees they cut down. One of the perks of living in FL.
I live in NY and have MANY of these plants - Mostly Vriesea's since I think they are the most beautiful and don't need sun to look pretty (as opposed to Neoregelia's). I have a real passion for them. Needless to say they all live inside my apt and not outdoors. I ONLY water the center cup until it is just about dry (or rather I don't see water in the cup) and they have been doing beautifully! I will water the "soil" once a month. As far as Tillandsia's it doesn't need to be that complicated. I have dunked them for just a few seconds in which case I wouldn't do it again for a week and have recently switched to misting twice or three times a week since I literally have hundreds and it just took too long. I think the most important thing for ALL plants is to used purified, distilled or rain water... NOT water directly out of the tap. All my plants are thriving and I think that makes the biggest difference.
How I love Thursdays! I could just grab a cup of tea and listen to those two ladies talk Bromeliads all day long. Wonderful video Summer Rayne. Happy plant nerd here.
I agree with you . Online , TH-cam and articles say spray or dunk to soak 15 to 20 minutes . And ... my beauties ended up drying to death . Now I soak once every 7 days and mist after 2 days with water around. Now I collect exotic airplants that's fragrant indoor .
The air plant guy was very passionate. You can tell it in his voice. I also liked the air plant as hair accesory :) The first stall seemed very keen on "patenting" everything though.
Awesome video! Just FYI but if you want to see more variety and more rare Bromeliads and Tillandsia. There will be a World Bromeliad Conference in San Diego this May-June. It will showcase rare plants both for show and sale. The commercial vendors just skim the surface for varieties that will sell. But the dedicated Bromeliad grower and vendors grow them all! Thanks again for the video and keep up the awesome work!!! 👍👍👍
Im new to buying air plants. I received one from my boss this past christmas and love it. I ordered quite a few online for my desk at work. I am loving them. Love this video.
I like your video so much ! I got to see beautiful plants that I never would of seen . Thank you for sharing . I want to start adding more plants to my home .
Thanks for these fantastic and informative videos! Ive grown air plants for over 20 years and I always water them by immersion in a bucket of water. Paul Isley recommends dunking once a week overnight. I often do this for up to 16 hours and this doesn't do any harm. I also add NPK fertiliser at about 1/10 recommended dilution fortnightly in summer.
Loved the air plant guy. So informative. That just happened to me today where I misted all of my maybe 30 air plants and 20 minutes later they were dry, so I gave them another good misting. Now I know I did it right! 😍
I have recently gotten into caring for air plants and this was so insightful and full of knowledge! I'm looking forward to more of your content in the coming year! Thank you for sharing all of this with us plant lovers
I have recently purchased a xerographica that measures about 7 inches across. This was very very very informative. I will be following his tips very closely. Thank you so much!
I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE the new content! I really enjoy the direction you’re moving in, and I am learning so much. And it’s really fun to see the pros doing their thing in their own spaces. So exciting to watch your channel expand! P.S. I hope you’ll tackle orchids soon. That’s a topic that’s really intimidating for newbies and I know you could help break it down.
OMG, Summer, I am so-o-o-o in love with house plants including bromeliads, this video is wonderful as are all your others! Watch them over and over. Does anyone out there have a serious fear of becoming a plant hoarder? The fear is overcoming my love and zeal for plants although I keep on adding to my collection which is 150 or so now . .
You asked all of the right questions, thank you! One of my air plant casualties was my xerographica, I had it for two years and out of nowhere it rotted. Still ticked about it. Ill get another one one day. Until then I have about 15+ other air plants to care for more carefully. Another one on my list is a tectorum. They have them at my nursery but they're 30$!
Ariel Christiansen I got a medium size tectorum for $10 at a store in Arlington, Texas. Then I got 2 baby tectorums for 7 bucks online (they sent 2 in case one died)
ashleyjlucio96 awesome! I have found a tectorum since as well, a HUGE one for 20$ from an Ecuadorian lady. After buying however I figured it must have been wild collected to have gotten so big and clumpy. In my guilt I'm taking extremely good care of it... It turns out there are different subspecies of tectorum as well, who knew? Enjoy your babies!
Quiznalia? Was that the name of the plant? (Approx. half way through the video). Such great colors and leaves. Thank you so much for sharing! I love growing these tillandsias here in Florida
Wow, I knew tillandsia were slow growing but didn't realize how slow. I'm not turning up my nose at the $15 price for the xerographica from now on! Three years is a long time for a grower to wait to make a profit.
i'm a new fan! and i have to say that your videos are amazing! thank you for sharing your best experiences and useful knowledge about plants...thanks a bunch Summer! :)

Does wearing cryptanthus in your hair give you fairy powers?
Hi my stem in the middle of my bromeliad dried out, so i cut because it made the plant look horrible. Is it done now? Will it ever flower again? The leaves are still healthy.
First like/comment! 😁 I love your videos! I am starting an indoor jungle in my apartment as well and could use all of the help I can get! 34 plants strong 😄 practicing restraint because of a big move (CHI》PHL) going down next year.
Has anyone tried putting tillandsias on top of vases of water? I sometimes have to leaves home for 4-5 days and although I have the self watering guys for my pots, im afraid for my other children!
I wonder if he over-paid for his tillandsia xerographica from whomever he imports from.. he made it sound like they were way more expensive than what Summer had said they were. I checked online & they are about $5-$20, like she said..? Hmmmmm🤔💸😉 LOL!
I got mine on rainforestflora.com shipped to Canada. They sell from pups and seeds not kidnapped from nature . And they are polite and gives you more from what you order plus its healthy .
Awesome video!

Precious video, esp. on Tillandsia care. Eye opener: Remist if plant dries too fast on first misting.
everyone online keeps saying 15-20 min soak.....I'll trust the guy who grows them and start soaking mine for 2+ hrs!!! thanks for the info Summer

This was really helpful and educational for a new comer into the plant community. Thank you so much Summer xx

I love the idea of "benign neglect" for the airplants.

How do you water the pink quill plant? do you water it like a bromeliad or an air plant? If water gets in the crown, do you shake it out?
About have of bromeliad species are epiphytic/lithophytic, the other half are terrestrial.
♥️♥️♥️

hey summer, how do you fight mealybugs on xerographicas? thinking of sprinkling diatomaceous earth on it
What the heck??? How did I not know this was in Ft. Lauderdale 😩
Is it a bad idea to keep Tillandsia in the bathroom? Will the steam from the shower w/ chlorine harm the plant?
Owh dear, i thought she always edit the intro in Brooklyn during summer rainy day...

If that's a tillansia zerograghica can it tolerate shade?
Has anyone tried putting tillandsias on top of vases of water? I sometimes have to leaves home for 4-5 days and although I have the self watering guys for my pots, im afraid for my other children!

Hi this is Autumn Leves from upstate Vermont. Joining me today is Winter Sno and Spring Flours.
I wonder if he over-paid for his tillandsia xerographica from whomever he imports from.. he made it sound like they were way more expensive than what Summer had said they were. I checked online & they are about $5-$20, like she said..? Hmmmmm🤔💸😉 LOL!
Erica Sapienza haha I know
Um, Jenessa rocks.
Gurken = German for: cucumbers
Benign neglect. I used to just call it plant abuse.
Shut up and take my money.
Gee girl, is that all the clothes you have? The overalls again! Spend some money on clothes!
I hate the girl so rude to tackle interviews😩
I love your videos i just bought one tillandsia yesterday it's so beautiful ♥️
