Elder Uchtdorf Celebrates with Navajo Residents the Electrification of their Homes

- Residents of Westwater, a Diné (Navajo) community just outside Blanding City in southeastern Utah, are celebrating the electrification of their homes. An interlocal agreement promises to also bring them culinary water.
An appreciation event was held Friday, September 16, with leaders from the state of Utah, the Navajo Nation, Blanding City, the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA), and San Juan County.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was present to show the Church’s support of the project. The Church made a US$500,000 contribution to the NTUA for the two-phase project.

This is awesome! What a blessing for this community. My parents served a senior mission on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico and they feel in love with the small branch and the community.

When for is the first LDS temple built inside Indian Reservations? Remember that a temple is not only a great influence to the dead & active living, but to the area & it’s a source of great influence for its environs. I know there are temples close enough to the most important reservations. Not in all occasions temples have been built in areas had a large number of active members to justify one. Perhaps this is what truly starts the real convert number growth of our Lamanite siblings. 😊

So glad to see some of the remote areas of the Navajo Reservation get electricity. The more developed areas like Tuba City and Kayenta have had electricity for years.

I’m glad at least the church is able to get something done. Honestly, it is a blot on our country that these communities don’t already have electricity and running water. If this many families had their power go out in Salt Lake City or a rich part of New York, can you imagine how hard the government would work and how much the community would pay to make sure power was returned as quickly as possible? And yet for some reason we do almost nothing as a community when I think it used to be roughly 300,000 people on reservations have no electricity or running water. I’m glad the church and charities are doing something about it. I’m also not usually a big government kind of person. But in this particular case utility’s are actually one of the few roles I believe make sense to fulfill with government. If the government isn’t going to provide utilities for these communities, maybe it shouldn’t be providing them for the rest of the country, either. I really feel like we as a community have failed our neighbors. Charities wouldn’t need to come in and fulfill this need if the government would actually make it a priority to do it’s job in the first place.
Um... there are people in the richest nation on Earth who do not have access to electricity in 2022? Uh... that seems like a big problem. I'm glad the Church helped, but I have SERIOUS questions why this problem was not solved by State and Native American Affairs offices who have the responsibility to do these things. I know towns in rural western Kansas that have a population of a few dozen people and have electricity and running water. We the people entrust our government with our collective power so they will ensure access to the most basic needs of anyone within it's borders, regardless of religion, skin color, language, or whatever other "difference" we might choose to summarily judge someone on. Nevertheless, thank you, Church Leaders, for seeing a need and addressing it. My heart goes out the Navajo who lived without electricity for so long!

I say Extended Family, because if They are a part of the Tribe of Manasseh and many of us are from the Tribe of Ephraim, then they really are our Family members! 👨👩👧👦❤️💒🕊️🌤️
And even if you are from Another Tribe of Israel, we are All Descendants of Jacob and thus, we need to take care of one Another! Each Tribe is Important to one another in the Last Days!

I'm so glad this is finally done. Thank you for getting it done. Now lets start eating meat sparingly so that 83% of our water maybe could be shared with them, because that too is an issue, and refilling the great salt lake, instead of growing alfalfa and feeding it to cows or sending it to China. That would be enlightened. They need water too, but we aren't gonna have it. I understand the govna makes money from alfalfa. It's not green lawns that are the problem. 83% goes to alfalfa. Y'all have influence. We can't have the growth they want and continue to use 83% of water supply on alfalfa. We need to eat meat sparingly, verse 13 of the word of wisdom is clear. Im sick of this interpretation crap. And tax every American transaction 1 cent to go towards American debt payoff, so we can be free from bad deals with other countries that turn Salt Lake City into a toxic dust bowl.
