- It's time to "step back from the brink", UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said, after Iran's attack on Israel.
Iran launched more than 300 projectiles at Israel on Saturday, in what it said was retaliation to an earlier strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
It’s unclear how Israel plans to respond, but war cabinet minister Benny Gantz said it will "exact a price" for Iran's attack when the timing is right.
Mr Guterres told the UN security council that people in the Middle East face the danger of a devastating full-scale conflict, while UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said now is the time to de-escalate.

The attack was announced much in advance 72 hours before the strike Iran contacted - via Switzerland - both the USA and Israel. It was conducted by slow moving Drones and caused little damage. Very few civilian casualties.

I believe you are correct. Iran could not allow an attack on a diplomatic facility go unanswered. Iran chose an option that had least risk of attracting retaliation, and from that perspective, sucessfull.

None were launched by the Iranians themselves, but the Iranian backed and supplied Hezbollah in Lebanon have been firing rockets and missiles at northern Israel on a daily basis since this sorry affair began. What we don't know is how much the Iranians are involved in the direction of Hezbollah, but the Iranian military commanders killed in the attack on the diplomatic mission in Damascus, suggests that perhaps that they have had their hand in the game. Well, the USA and the UK have also been meddling and backing Israel, so it's hardly surprising that Iran too would be involved indirectly. Regardless, it is Israel that first directly attacked Iranian territory. Any diplomatic mission being the territory of the country that occupies it under international law and convention.

It's an excuse to escalate the violence further.
I understand the sentiment, but it is accurate. What they mean is that Iran has spent decades conducting proxy attacks on Israel. Israel too has engaged in the assassinations of key Iranian figures. The Israeli attack on the Iranian Consular Section of their embassy in Damascus being the most recent and most brazen. What is unprecedented is that this time, Iran has openly conducted a military strike from their own soil on Israel. That is why they are saying unprecedented as it is a massive break with the way things have being conducted until now. Israel's attack on the Iranian diplomatic mission in Damascus isn't unprecedented in the same way as they have not openly admitted to doing it. I.e., they followed the precedent of the past, but of course, it was so brazen that everybody knows that it was Israel.
Because this was the first time Iran attacked Israel directly, opening the door for Israel to attack Iran directly. Previously Iran always used its proxies to attack Israel - Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis being the most visible - and Israel mostly limited its responses to attacks on those proxies or the Iranian forces supporting those proxies near the front line. That's what the attack on the Iranian "embassy" in Syria was about: it was the headquarters from which Iran was controlling proxy forces in the area. Now the door is open for Israel to start bombing any target it likes in Iran itself, and I suspect there are a lot of generals in Iranian uniforms about to receive the same treatment as the "embassy" in Syria did.
Why they not using the word retaliation?
Iran has never directly attacked Israel. This was a direct attack; hence it was unprecedented. It is clear that Iran was sending a message and not trying to inflict real damage. Let's hope the Israeli's don't escalate things cause all-out war would be bad for everyone.

If you have any political knowledge, you will understand that attacking the consulate of any country is against international law. We had the full and legal right to respond to this attack. But we didn't want to cause casualties or military damage because these cases will increase tensions.Therefore, 72 hours before the missile operation, we informed the USA and Israel through Switzerland that we decided to conduct missile operations on their land; We also asked USA not to interfere in the issue between us and Israel.But as always, Israel asked help from USA. Therefore, Israel shot down 99% of our missiles with the cooperation of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Jordan, and only 1% of our missiles hit a base in the south of Israel, which did not cause much damage. We carried out our missile operation because every action has a reaction and I am proud of my country for being able to carry out the biggest missile attack in the history of Israel without killing innocent civilians.
