My parents' old car got reversed into 3 times (one time requiring a whole new door and some more body work) and the right hand side is full of dings from an asshole family with a parking spot on the right hand side of the car. However nobody has ever left a note even apologizing for the damage. The only time somebody has contacted my parents was when some stuck up bitch reversed into the car and tried to make a run for it before a neighbor stopped her and threatened to call the cops. Short version of the story is that parking lots, wherever they are, always bring out the worst in people.

I completely disagree with most of Mr. DeMuros points. I regularly drive and have daily driven my MUCH older Ferrari 308 QV. It draws a lot of attention - yeah, but I expect that. Services are costly, especially at a Ferrari dealership, however, when I got a screw in my tire I took it right the local tire place and it cost me less than $20. I drive it for ME, not for the resale value. I park at WalMart or the grocery store and have learned to NOT worry about little scratches and such. People LOVE the car and generally respect it for what it is. As James Glickenhaus said - not driving your Ferrari is like not having sex with your girlfriend so that she will be better for her next boyfriend.
But Mr. DeMuro seemed extremely worried about resale value in his video which does make my analogy apply. That is what I was referencing... If he doesnt want to drive a Ferrari every day because he is worried about the resale value, then maybe he shouldnt own a Ferrari.

They always make full inspection on a car at dealer services. If they find something they will tell you but your not forced to fix it if you don't want too.

As someone who's been daily-driving MR2s, Fieros, an Elise, various Zs, and a CRX for the past 15 years, the only thing with any real merit here is the price issue. Even my Elise lost a lot of value at only 47k miles. But I buy sports cars to drive them, so I go in with the mentality that it's going to depreciate, not sit on a shelf as a collector's item. At which point it's just an issue of whether a given person can afford to do that with a given car. Yes, sports cars don't have as many seats as a double-decker bus. But that only matters if you have more than one passenger. Obviously, a two-seater isn't good for a family of eight. But it's fine for one or two people. One you didn't mention: sports cars have limited trunk / frunk space. But there's plenty of room for groceries. My MR2 Spyder (third gen) had far less room than a 360 Spider, but I never had real issues by myself. (Different story when a date and I discovered we had to crush the corners of the pizza box to make it fit in the frunk.) And I've gone camping with two people in both Fieros and (second gen) MR2s. And even my mom's Outback doesn't fit eight 12-foot sheets of sheetrock in the back. Sometimes you just have to borrow or rent something bigger; that's life. Yes, parking the car in a random location is risky. The only difference here is in the cost of that risk versus the cost with a $500 Honda. Which goes back to, "can you afford a Ferrari?" not "can you drive it daily?" There's also the difference that most places I ever went had parking lots and/or garages nearby, so I rarely had to park street-side anywhere, making this a situational issue. Yes, dealerships are expensive. No, you don't actually have to use them. It's just a matter of how much you care about resale value versus saving money now (and how much you trust the random shop versus the dealership), which again ultimately comes down to "can you afford a Ferrari?" Yes, putting miles on the car costs money. The important aspect you didn't cover here is the historically enormous relative costs of maintaining supercars versus a Camry. In the 38k miles I drove my Elise, a Gallardo would have needed three to four clutches, each costing about $10k. That's as much in clutches as my entire car cost. Again, this boils down to affordability, not whether you can drive it daily. Ditto for insurance costs. Yes, the attention can get annoying. Especially since 99% of it comes from middle-aged and older dudes. But you get used to it and learn when to have fun with it and when to say "sorry, in a hurry, have a nice day!" (Unless you're into older dudes, in which case it's probably a bonus.) Yes, sports cars are bumpier than my mom's Outback . But I still feel more comfortable in my MR2 because I like the road feel and the control.

Paying outright for a supercar is so dumb, if you can afford to buy it finance the car and invest the money else where unless your buying something ultra rare and sought after, that £200-£300k you drop on a Lamborghini or Ferrari you won't be selling that for that money
If you're worrying that much about the wear-and--tear and resale value of the car, perhaps you weren't really rich enough to own it in the first place. It's just a toy so enjoy it.

I think with regards to attention he is separating Ferrari customers into two distinct camps - those that buy the car for the symbol/name brand prestige and those who buy the car for the PERFORMANCE. I quite honestly consider my 911 turbo S to be a super car (it is around the $200k mark after all, with performance that dwarfs a 360) but the car only receives looks and generates excitement among car enthusiasts. If someone approaches me to ask about my car, they are much more likely to talk to me about the car's performance figures than questions like how much I paid for the car or what I do/did for a living. 99% of people have no idea what a turbo S is or that it is any different from a normal Porsche 911. Additionally, maintenance should always be considered an issue - why would I buy a car I will have to pay $15k a year to maintain on top of a large price point when I can pay the same amount for a more reliable one? People who you consider wealthy don't become so by being careless with their money, they become so through hard work and dedication (for the most part). Thanks for your time.

I have been driving mine every day for 20 years. Its got scratches , worn seats, dog saliva on the windows etc...It has 205k on the clock and I take it to my local mechanic who loves having it in his workshop because he loves it and so do his customers. He charges me proper rates. Steer clear of Ferrari dealers. To my kids and grandkids I am a legend to all their mates. One day I will sell it for more than I bought it. Stick to your Honda Doug and don't worry about it too much, its a car and you can repair scratches.
I used to be a chauffeur and got to drive lots of great cars, but one weekend I was expected to drive a 458 and stay in London for 2 nights and 3 days. No one tells you how bloody wide they are. There was only one car park that I could physically get the car in on Mayfair just up the road from the Dorchester but I didn't buy an overnight ticket in advance so I couldn't leave it there. I couldn't park it on the road because I was a coward even if I could physically do it. 2011 model had no sensors, so I ended up driving out of London and sleeping IN the car at the service station at Junction 1 of the M1. I got to my hotel for just 50 minutes to shower and change once. I never, ever wanted to drive one ever again.

His mother died relatively quickly, though it was horrific but his father lingered for ages. The chauffeuring was easy brainless work. The fun part was I often got to take the cars home.

An attorney friend of mine, he's probably the best attorney I've ever met, he comes across as this county lawyer, exaggerates the accent when in other states, and boy are they shocked when he goes for the kill and gets it. He's very generous to his staff as well. He loaned his brand new Corvette out to the receptionist to use her entire birthday weekend. I gave him hell about it, he tossed me the keys, I didn't even work for him, this was while I was Clerk of Court. I caught them, but I couldn't drive it because it was stick shift, so he took me for a fast ride! But, the sweetest thing he did was help his paralegal. She was like me, had a natural ability to understand the law but she had a small child and couldn't afford it. She got into law school, her parents helped take care of her child, she got loans and when she graduated, she had a job waiting for her. I'm sure he helped her with expenses but not expecting anything in return, except a great lawyer. He answered his own phone sometimes if they were busy and as long as it wasn't his case, and you needed a quick answer, he never hesitated with the answer. Very cool guy!
Robin Addis-Vaughn He sounds awesome! To be honest most of the cars I drove were a bit of a disappointment. The only exec car I loved was the Mercedes S class and the Maybach, but 7 Series BMW gave me back ache and the Bentley Flying Spur was fast (had it up to 177 mph) but the driving position was awful. I kept bumping my head and I'm only 5'7"! Of the supercars the Lamborghini had no working windows and no aircon so was like sitting in a microwave, the ferraris are just too wide for UK roads, I drove a Noble which was very cool but scary. The only car I was blown away by and ended up really REALLY wanting was an Aston Martin DB9. It was a nice job and every single client was really lovely. Not one douchebag :D

When I had an exotic car, I only took routes on which I had previously driven to make sure they were free of road hazards. They were very familiar anyway; I knew them from driving in my everyday car. Also, since I only drove it every couple weeks, I thought nothing of jumping on the toll road and driving 15-20 miles to the burbs for a nice dinner. There's nothing like a little open road for a Ferrari, in fact it's what they were made for, IMHO. Also, I paid a private mechanic to do the easy everyday maintenance such as changing the battery and patching tires. It's a way to get work done much cheaper and it sounds good. "I hire a private mechanic" insinuates I'm affluent enough to have one and that somehow it's so much better. In reality, I'm just too cheap to tolerate paying those dealer ripoff prices! Have to pickup two people? The answer is quite simple: DON'T TAKE THE FERRARI. (It's not a super secret that they're two-seaters.) I NEVER had a problem with valet parking. Most of the places I went parked it right in front anyway, and I only allowed the same person to park it every time. Yes, he got a very generous tip. If you want to park it in an attended garage, just jot down the mileage when you check it in and let them know you did it. This video insinuates every parking garage would pull a Ferris Bueller, but that's not true. Some even require the mileage to be recorded as a term of service. Of course I would never take the car on everyday errands. A few times I had no choice, but it was only to the cleaner or pharmacy, no biggie. Owning an exotic car is expensive, there's no way to avoid that. But, some of the things in this video are a little exaggerated. My philosophy is these incredible machines were made to be DRIVEN for pleasure. If you bought one for investment, then why drive it at all? Just leave it parked, keep the tires inflated and start it every couple weeks. If you're going to stress out over every little thing, then you obviously can't afford to own one.
I use to hang out at the local Ferrari dealer here in Portland OR when they sold Ducatis there (I owned one then)....a doctor comes in driving an F40...the doc scrapes the crap out of the front air dam pulling in...I visibly cringe...the salesman who I hung out with sees me cringe and says to me..."Get this, that's his "daily driver" car, so that scraping doesn't matter to him"....THAT is how you daily drive a Ferrari...you buy one you don't give a crap about and use it as a daily driver...lol!
Well, I've talked to an Enzo owner and he's worried about the mileage. Fair enough, an Enzo is an *investment* and not a toy for the "typical hedge-fund-manager".
The point is not to intentionally make bad financial decisions. The point is that the financially responsible thing to is to be in a comfortable/secure enough financial position that IF you suddenly and completely lost the car then it wouldn't significantly affect you at all. It's like investing/gambling. You should be well enough off to lose double what you're currently investing/gambling and still be fine. It's NOT that you plan to lose money. It's being responsible enough to be in a good enough financial position to be able to take those bumps/risks/loses from the start, which is the smart/responsible thing to do, if possible.
I heard a guy once say if you have to ask about the price you can't afford it. I think a similar saying goes for cars. If you have to worry about door dings, you shouldn't be driving it.

I had a brand new Miata. Once when parking it in a large chain supermarket parking lot, even though I parked well away from every car, a runaway grocery cart hit the side and left a big dent. I complained about it and was contacted by the companies attorney. He told me, if I took the company to court, I would lose because they are not responsible. However, he was a nice man, and maybe even sympathized with my dilemma. He suggested that I get it fixed and send the bill to the company telling them the story like I expected them to pay for it. Amazing, they did, and that was that.
I get screws and nails in pretty much every tire I buy... just because it's a Ferrari does not mean you can't patch it yourself for 10 bucks.. especially a screw that's right in the middle of the tire like that. That's a 20 minute permanent fix.
Doug, love your videos. I have had several sports cars, hears what I learnt.... never buy a car your not comfortable or willing to park on the streets of NY. If the threat of a ding is stressing you out - or your scared of the valet, don’t buy the car. I made this mistake when I was in my mid 20’s where I put all my money into a new 93 rx7 and I was freaked out whenever I parked it. I had a stream of more mainstream cars since, but now I’m back to buying wonderful sports cars - and yes I parked my current Ftype svr in NY just last week and I regular valet it. I’m no longer stressed, I have other cars and in the end, it’s an expensive machine that well, will have expensive repairs - own it only if you can truly afford the cost of ownership!

this is a great video for people who are getting into the entry level used supercar market (360s...gallardos...old astin db9/vantage etc) ...because this type.of folk is your middle income earner (1-300kish)...if your anyone making GOOD money (7figures and up)...your notnworried about this...you'll get a brand new one on lease/payments, use it proper , and get a new one in 2-3 years and not worry about anything doug just said

A 2004 Ferrari 360 is cheaper than a 2016 BMW x5 with a couple options. You don't have to be wealthy, just willing to commit to spending $60k on a toy instead of a practical tool.

2:40, this is stupid. Any reputable valet has good insurance and any intelligent sports car owner who valet parks has a dash cam. Valet parking is MUCH better than parking on the fucking street where someone can easily smash your car and take off, leaving you to make the insurance claim. I valet my Rolls Royce regularly. 3:40 is also stupid, anyone with a car this expensive has roadside assistance coverage and if you're so paranoid about resale that you think you will take a hit for getting a tire patched at some shop you probably should be more thrifty about your car choice.
Yeah this is bullshit. Why would it be in the service history in the first place? I got my F458 tire patched (side part was letting out a bit of air, it was losing a few bar's after a week) at some random shop and paid them 20€ and was done with it.

If it gets a scratch, have it fixed and noone would care if it has a "non-oe" plug in the tyre. Come time to sell, have fresh tyres put on it at a shop that won't scratch your wheels, and balance them properly. Far from every Fcar owner has their tyres changed at their dealer, and often if they do, it won't be in the service history. He is simply creating faults that are not there. Heck, driven properly, a clutch can last between 25-35k miles.
Nearly anyone can afford a Ferrari. You can find them used for the same price as a brand new truck or most other "driver's" cars. Hell, I'm sure you can find them as cheap as a new commuter car.

I used to have a badass classic 1973 Camaro. It had 650 hp and a $6000 paint job. I know it's not comparable to a Ferrari, but it was something that everyone who saw it loved it and I got offers for it every day. Basically a super fast show car. It was my daily driver for a little over a year, and while it was really cool at first, you pretty quickly realize that it's not ideal to drive something like that on a daily basis, that and the fact that even the coolest car in the world gets to seem pretty hum drum plain with enough time behind the wheel. When you use it every day it loses something. It somehow seems less special to you, and in my opinion that's the highest cost of all about using something like that every day.

I really do appreciate cars like this and wish I could afford one (no, I wouldn't buy one even than but still wish I could afford one!). However I do get a kick out of the fact in the real world I can drive my Jeep or my Studebaker pickup faster than a Ferrari or Corvette driver. Why you ask? A police officer sees a Ferrari and he's going to be thinking "what is this guy up to, he's been up to something, he's about to be up to something". It made me laugh because it is SO true! Unfortunately, I once had to drive through a very small town of 3,600 population to get to and from my parent's home and more times than not, the police would pull me over because I was driving or riding something that was 'too fast looking to be legal' or because they didn't 'recognize' the vehicle in "THEIR town." Sad but true. Yeah, I got a few tickets I shouldn't have just because the cops said : "That vehicle didn't come that way from the factory." which was total B$ on their part for being so stickler. One cop even admitted he owned a '38 Chevy with headers (just as illegal as any of my vehicles with headers and stainless mufflers since it was 'altered exhaust') but since he was ON THE JOB, he noticed I had headers (full turbo mufflers and tailpipes, even) and he HAD TO ISSUE A CITATION because IT WAS HIS JOB!..Thankfully where I live now, they don't mess with me unless I do something like speed more than 15 over the limit. Racer Sounds like you are in someplace like California. Here in NC they don't care about modified exhaust, it just has to work. Many years ago when the cops would have you get out of the car I had an officer get on his PA and say "Sir, would you please step out of that whatever it is you are driving". I guess it's not surprising a Raleigh cop in about 1977 didn't know what a Studebaker Hawk was!
Jeff DeWitt Here's something that was a bit amusing when I was only about 8 years old. My grandfather had a '60 Studebaker Lark. He loved that car, even showing the engine off to me after the story I post below. He kept that car until around 1971, -- We were driving on a 2 lane highway out to my great grandparent's home and some sort of musclecar with glass packs passed us. This was not unusual since he would ALWAYS drive slow, at least during the years I remember him. He would always pull onto the shoulder while going his normal speed.so everyone could easily pass since it was a double yellow no passing zone. I'd ask him why he didn't just drive faster. Anyway, he said; "Ya know son, a few years ago, these 'hippies' pulled up next to me thinking their GTO was fast. They didn't know I had an exhaust cutout, I opened up my exhaust and made them look like they were sitting still. Being 8, I didn't have any real knowledge of a car's horsepower ratings or anything but I did know my cousin's GTO was fast as hell, so I found his story a little hard to believe but I went with it." -- Fast forward about 9 years and by that time I had owned a '69 Mustang 351, a '71 Challenger R/T 440 and as far as FAST, my daily driver was a '67 Formula S Barracuda 383 4-speed which had been a drag race only car one month before I purchased it, so it was quite modified, having run 12.20 1/4 mile times in race trim and 13.0's in street trim while I owned it. (4.56:1 sure grip diff which was a bit tough on the highway, ha ha) -- I was reading SuperStock & Drag Illustrated magazine and I saw a Studebaker drag car and it made me think about what my grandfather had told me 9 years earlier. I just smiled, knowing that his statement was either 1) a gross exaggeration 2) the GTO driver wasn't racing him, or 3) the GTO was in serious need of of a tuneup. His '60 Lark, IF it had the 4.2 liter engine, was capable of about a 10 second 0-60 time, having about 120 horsepower. I never much cared for his 4-door Lark but I have always admired the Hawk since the first time I saw one. Maybe some day I will run across the right deal and be a lucky owner as well. Sorry for the rant but just wanted to share a 'funny' memory relating to a Stude that was in my family. Take care..
Racer A Lark VIII (that's what Studebaker called the V8 Larks) can be a pretty quick little car but I agree it's unlikely a stock one could be a GTO IF the GTO was healthy AND if the driver knew what he was doing. At times good driver in a slower can can beat an overconfident driver in a faster one... as a gentleman by the name of Ted Harbit, driving Studebakers, has demonstrated more than a few times at the Pure Stock Musclecar Drags. And the big irony is- If you don't drive your Ferrari every day, the seals get dry. Then when the owner wants to have fun and jumps into it to have a fling and leans on it, something leaks, and/or something breaks. They must be driven daily for at least a few miles.

Guy Random Definitely a good point. So far this year I've probably spent about 2k on my F430 on maintenance (and another 2.5k on insurance) and will likely spend another 8k by having capristo headers installed. You just have to accept that an expensive car comes with a premium when it comes to parts and labor. Regular mantenance (oil, brake flush, radiator fluid) comes like at 1k a year, so that is not bad. 15k maintenance might be a little more expensive, but if you are a DIYer and feel bold, you might be able to buy the spark plugs for 30 bucks a pop and do the job yourself and save some cash in the process.
don't think there are any service records for tire shops ... well i mean yes there are if you go in and give them a name and a number but they don't show up on car fax or anywhere else
I think mostly it's best to make the dealer to handle the fixing of the tire because you wouldn't want to be traveling 100mph and something going wrong. And in case something goes wrong, you have full proof that you took caution to fix the tire the way the manufacturer recommends.

The only time somebody has contacted my parents was when some stuck up bitch reversed into the car and tried to make a run for it before a neighbor stopped her and threatened to call the cops.

I completely disagree with most of Mr. DeMuros points. I regularly drive and have daily driven my MUCH older Ferrari 308 QV. It draws a lot of attention - yeah, but I expect that. Services are costly, especially at a Ferrari dealership, however, when I got a screw in my tire I took it right the local tire place and it cost me less than $20. I drive it for ME, not for the resale value. I park at WalMart or the grocery store and have learned to NOT worry about little scratches and such. People LOVE the car and generally respect it for what it is. As James Glickenhaus said - not driving your Ferrari is like not having sex with your girlfriend so that she will be better for her next boyfriend.

As someone who's been daily-driving MR2s, Fieros, an Elise, various Zs, and a CRX for the past 15 years, the only thing with any real merit here is the price issue. Even my Elise lost a lot of value at only 47k miles. But I buy sports cars to drive them, so I go in with the mentality that it's going to depreciate, not sit on a shelf as a collector's item. At which point it's just an issue of whether a given person can afford to do that with a given car.
Yes, sports cars don't have as many seats as a double-decker bus. But that only matters if you have more than one passenger. Obviously, a two-seater isn't good for a family of eight. But it's fine for one or two people.
One you didn't mention: sports cars have limited trunk / frunk space. But there's plenty of room for groceries. My MR2 Spyder (third gen) had far less room than a 360 Spider, but I never had real issues by myself. (Different story when a date and I discovered we had to crush the corners of the pizza box to make it fit in the frunk.) And I've gone camping with two people in both Fieros and (second gen) MR2s.
And even my mom's Outback doesn't fit eight 12-foot sheets of sheetrock in the back. Sometimes you just have to borrow or rent something bigger; that's life.
Yes, parking the car in a random location is risky. The only difference here is in the cost of that risk versus the cost with a $500 Honda. Which goes back to, "can you afford a Ferrari?" not "can you drive it daily?"
There's also the difference that most places I ever went had parking lots and/or garages nearby, so I rarely had to park street-side anywhere, making this a situational issue.
Yes, dealerships are expensive. No, you don't actually have to use them. It's just a matter of how much you care about resale value versus saving money now (and how much you trust the random shop versus the dealership), which again ultimately comes down to "can you afford a Ferrari?"
Yes, putting miles on the car costs money. The important aspect you didn't cover here is the historically enormous relative costs of maintaining supercars versus a Camry. In the 38k miles I drove my Elise, a Gallardo would have needed three to four clutches, each costing about $10k. That's as much in clutches as my entire car cost. Again, this boils down to affordability, not whether you can drive it daily. Ditto for insurance costs.
Yes, the attention can get annoying. Especially since 99% of it comes from middle-aged and older dudes. But you get used to it and learn when to have fun with it and when to say "sorry, in a hurry, have a nice day!" (Unless you're into older dudes, in which case it's probably a bonus.)

I think with regards to attention he is separating Ferrari customers into two distinct camps - those that buy the car for the symbol/name brand prestige and those who buy the car for the PERFORMANCE. I quite honestly consider my 911 turbo S to be a super car (it is around the $200k mark after all, with performance that dwarfs a 360) but the car only receives looks and generates excitement among car enthusiasts. If someone approaches me to ask about my car, they are much more likely to talk to me about the car's performance figures than questions like how much I paid for the car or what I do/did for a living. 99% of people have no idea what a turbo S is or that it is any different from a normal Porsche 911.
Additionally, maintenance should always be considered an issue - why would I buy a car I will have to pay $15k a year to maintain on top of a large price point when I can pay the same amount for a more reliable one? People who you consider wealthy don't become so by being careless with their money, they become so through hard work and dedication (for the most part).

I have been driving mine every day for 20 years. Its got scratches , worn seats, dog saliva on the windows etc...It has 205k on the clock and I take it to my local mechanic who loves having it in his workshop because he loves it and so do his customers. He charges me proper rates. Steer clear of Ferrari dealers. To my kids and grandkids I am a legend to all their mates. One day I will sell it for more than I bought it. Stick to your Honda Doug and don't worry about it too much, its a car and you can repair scratches.

I used to be a chauffeur and got to drive lots of great cars, but one weekend I was expected to drive a 458 and stay in London for 2 nights and 3 days. No one tells you how bloody wide they are. There was only one car park that I could physically get the car in on Mayfair just up the road from the Dorchester but I didn't buy an overnight ticket in advance so I couldn't leave it there. I couldn't park it on the road because I was a coward even if I could physically do it. 2011 model had no sensors, so I ended up driving out of London and sleeping IN the car at the service station at Junction 1 of the M1. I got to my hotel for just 50 minutes to shower and change once. I never, ever wanted to drive one ever again.

His mother died relatively quickly, though it was horrific but his father lingered for ages. The chauffeuring was easy brainless work. The fun part was I often got to take the cars home.

An attorney friend of mine, he's probably the best attorney I've ever met, he comes across as this county lawyer, exaggerates the accent when in other states, and boy are they shocked when he goes for the kill and gets it. He's very generous to his staff as well. He loaned his brand new Corvette out to the receptionist to use her entire birthday weekend. I gave him hell about it, he tossed me the keys, I didn't even work for him, this was while I was Clerk of Court. I caught them, but I couldn't drive it because it was stick shift, so he took me for a fast ride! But, the sweetest thing he did was help his paralegal. She was like me, had a natural ability to understand the law but she had a small child and couldn't afford it. She got into law school, her parents helped take care of her child, she got loans and when she graduated, she had a job waiting for her. I'm sure he helped her with expenses but not expecting anything in return, except a great lawyer. He answered his own phone sometimes if they were busy and as long as it wasn't his case, and you needed a quick answer, he never hesitated with the answer. Very cool guy!
Robin Addis-Vaughn He sounds awesome! To be honest most of the cars I drove were a bit of a disappointment. The only exec car I loved was the Mercedes S class and the Maybach, but 7 Series BMW gave me back ache and the Bentley Flying Spur was fast (had it up to 177 mph) but the driving position was awful. I kept bumping my head and I'm only 5'7"! Of the supercars the Lamborghini had no working windows and no aircon so was like sitting in a microwave, the ferraris are just too wide for UK roads, I drove a Noble which was very cool but scary. The only car I was blown away by and ended up really REALLY wanting was an Aston Martin DB9. It was a nice job and every single client was really lovely. Not one douchebag :D

When I had an exotic car, I only took routes on which I had previously driven to make sure they were free of road hazards. They were very familiar anyway; I knew them from driving in my everyday car. Also, since I only drove it every couple weeks, I thought nothing of jumping on the toll road and driving 15-20 miles to the burbs for a nice dinner. There's nothing like a little open road for a Ferrari, in fact it's what they were made for, IMHO. Also, I paid a private mechanic to do the easy everyday maintenance such as changing the battery and patching tires. It's a way to get work done much cheaper and it sounds good. "I hire a private mechanic" insinuates I'm affluent enough to have one and that somehow it's so much better. In reality, I'm just too cheap to tolerate paying those dealer ripoff prices! Have to pickup two people? The answer is quite simple: DON'T TAKE THE FERRARI. (It's not a super secret that they're two-seaters.) I NEVER had a problem with valet parking. Most of the places I went parked it right in front anyway, and I only allowed the same person to park it every time. Yes, he got a very generous tip. If you want to park it in an attended garage, just jot down the mileage when you check it in and let them know you did it. This video insinuates every parking garage would pull a Ferris Bueller, but that's not true. Some even require the mileage to be recorded as a term of service. Of course I would never take the car on everyday errands. A few times I had no choice, but it was only to the cleaner or pharmacy, no biggie. Owning an exotic car is expensive, there's no way to avoid that. But, some of the things in this video are a little exaggerated. My philosophy is these incredible machines were made to be DRIVEN for pleasure. If you bought one for investment, then why drive it at all? Just leave it parked, keep the tires inflated and start it every couple weeks. If you're going to stress out over every little thing, then you obviously can't afford to own one.

I use to hang out at the local Ferrari dealer here in Portland OR when they sold Ducatis there (I owned one then)....a doctor comes in driving an F40...the doc scrapes the crap out of the front air dam pulling in...I visibly cringe...the salesman who I hung out with sees me cringe and says to me..."Get this, that's his "daily driver" car, so that scraping doesn't matter to him"....THAT is how you daily drive a Ferrari...you buy one you don't give a crap about and use it as a daily driver...lol!

The point is not to intentionally make bad financial decisions. The point is that the financially responsible thing to is to be in a comfortable/secure enough financial position that IF you suddenly and completely lost the car then it wouldn't significantly affect you at all. It's like investing/gambling. You should be well enough off to lose double what you're currently investing/gambling and still be fine. It's NOT that you plan to lose money. It's being responsible enough to be in a good enough financial position to be able to take those bumps/risks/loses from the start, which is the smart/responsible thing to do, if possible.

I had a brand new Miata. Once when parking it in a large chain supermarket parking lot, even though I parked well away from every car, a runaway grocery cart hit the side and left a big dent. I complained about it and was contacted by the companies attorney. He told me, if I took the company to court, I would lose because they are not responsible. However, he was a nice man, and maybe even sympathized with my dilemma. He suggested that I get it fixed and send the bill to the company telling them the story like I expected them to pay for it. Amazing, they did, and that was that.

I get screws and nails in pretty much every tire I buy... just because it's a Ferrari does not mean you can't patch it yourself for 10 bucks.. especially a screw that's right in the middle of the tire like that. That's a 20 minute permanent fix.

Doug, love your videos. I have had several sports cars, hears what I learnt.... never buy a car your not comfortable or willing to park on the streets of NY. If the threat of a ding is stressing you out - or your scared of the valet, don’t buy the car. I made this mistake when I was in my mid 20’s where I put all my money into a new 93 rx7 and I was freaked out whenever I parked it. I had a stream of more mainstream cars since, but now I’m back to buying wonderful sports cars - and yes I parked my current Ftype svr in NY just last week and I regular valet it. I’m no longer stressed, I have other cars and in the end, it’s an expensive machine that well, will have expensive repairs - own it only if you can truly afford the cost of ownership!

Not that it's any of my business, but I am REALLY curious what it is that you do for a living. I mean the president of my company (which is a multi-million dollar company) drives a nice BMW SUV, but not a Ferrari.
A 2004 Ferrari 360 is cheaper than a 2016 BMW x5 with a couple options. You don't have to be wealthy, just willing to commit to spending $60k on a toy instead of a practical tool.

2:40, this is stupid. Any reputable valet has good insurance and any intelligent sports car owner who valet parks has a dash cam. Valet parking is MUCH better than parking on the fucking street where someone can easily smash your car and take off, leaving you to make the insurance claim. I valet my Rolls Royce regularly. 3:40 is also stupid, anyone with a car this expensive has roadside assistance coverage and if you're so paranoid about resale that you think you will take a hit for getting a tire patched at some shop you probably should be more thrifty about your car choice.
Yeah this is bullshit. Why would it be in the service history in the first place? I got my F458 tire patched (side part was letting out a bit of air, it was losing a few bar's after a week) at some random shop and paid them 20€ and was done with it.
yeah the 'shopping cart hitting my car' thing is dumb too. I worry about that even with my truck, and if you/your insurance won't be able to cover the cost of repair if it does happen, you're probably living out of your price range

I really wanted a Ferrari when I was younger. Thought they were the one of the best looking cars (and still do). Then you grow up and realize:
-you could buy a Ferrari or you could invest the money and have a lot more later
-A Ferrari costs a lot and quickly loses its value as you put miles on it (like most cars do)
-The insurance is insane
-Repairs are insane
-You do not want to daily it as this video explained but you still want to drive it.
Now I realize I just want a fast car that can be modded and driven hard without the baggage (like a WRX).

***** The man is talking about depreciation due to millage and not having the tyre done at an Fcar dealer. That is simply ridiculous. It's a 360, not a 250. Drive it and enjoy it. If it gets a scratch, have it fixed and noone would care if it has a "non-oe" plug in the tyre. Come time to sell, have fresh tyres put on it at a shop that won't scratch your wheels, and balance them properly. Far from every Fcar owner has their tyres changed at their dealer, and often if they do, it won't be in the service history. He is simply creating faults that are not there. Heck, driven properly, a clutch can last between 25-35k miles.
Nearly anyone can afford a Ferrari. You can find them used for the same price as a brand new truck or most other "driver's" cars. Hell, I'm sure you can find them as cheap as a new commuter car.

I used to have a badass classic 1973 Camaro. It had 650 hp and a $6000 paint job. I know it's not comparable to a Ferrari, but it was something that everyone who saw it loved it and I got offers for it every day. Basically a super fast show car. It was my daily driver for a little over a year, and while it was really cool at first, you pretty quickly realize that it's not ideal to drive something like that on a daily basis, that and the fact that even the coolest car in the world gets to seem pretty hum drum plain with enough time behind the wheel. When you use it every day it loses something. It somehow seems less special to you, and in my opinion that's the highest cost of all about using something like that every day.

I really do appreciate cars like this and wish I could afford one (no, I wouldn't buy one even than but still wish I could afford one!). However I do get a kick out of the fact in the real world I can drive my Jeep or my Studebaker pickup faster than a Ferrari or Corvette driver.
Why you ask? A police officer sees a Ferrari and he's going to be thinking "what is this guy up to, he's been up to something, he's about to be up to something". He sees me going the same speed in my Studebaker and his first thoughts are going to be "what the heck is that" or "I haven't seen one of those in years".

Jeff DeWitt I completely agree with your "Why you ask?" paragraph! If it's an exotic, a red sports car or a crotch rocket, they will be getting the ticket more often than you! It made me laugh because it is SO true! Unfortunately, I once had to drive through a very small town of 3,600 population to get to and from my parent's home and more times than not, the police would pull me over because I was driving or riding something that was 'too fast looking to be legal' or because they didn't 'recognize' the vehicle in "THEIR town." Sad but true. Yeah, I got a few tickets I shouldn't have just because the cops said : "That vehicle didn't come that way from the factory." which was total B$ on their part for being so stickler. One cop even admitted he owned a '38 Chevy with headers (just as illegal as any of my vehicles with headers and stainless mufflers since it was 'altered exhaust') but since he was ON THE JOB, he noticed I had headers (full turbo mufflers and tailpipes, even) and he HAD TO ISSUE A CITATION because IT WAS HIS JOB!..Thankfully where I live now, they don't mess with me unless I do something like speed more than 15 over the limit. Many years ago when the cops would have you get out of the car I had an officer get on his PA and say "Sir, would you please step out of that whatever it is you are driving". I guess it's not surprising a Raleigh cop in about 1977 didn't know what a Studebaker Hawk was!
Jeff DeWitt Here's something that was a bit amusing when I was only about 8 years old. My grandfather had a '60 Studebaker Lark. He loved that car, even showing the engine off to me after the story I post below. He kept that car until around 1971, -- We were driving on a 2 lane highway out to my great grandparent's home and some sort of musclecar with glass packs passed us. This was not unusual since he would ALWAYS drive slow, at least during the years I remember him. He would always pull onto the shoulder while going his normal speed.so everyone could easily pass since it was a double yellow no passing zone. I'd ask him why he didn't just drive faster. Anyway, he said; "Ya know son, a few years ago, these 'hippies' pulled up next to me thinking their GTO was fast. They didn't know I had an exhaust cutout, I opened up my exhaust and made them look like they were sitting still. Being 8, I didn't have any real knowledge of a car's horsepower ratings or anything but I did know my cousin's GTO was fast as hell, so I found his story a little hard to believe but I went with it." -- Fast forward about 9 years and by that time I had owned a '69 Mustang 351, a '71 Challenger R/T 440 and as far as FAST, my daily driver was a '67 Formula S Barracuda 383 4-speed which had been a drag race only car one month before I purchased it, so it was quite modified, having run 12.20 1/4 mile times in race trim and 13.0's in street trim while I owned it. (4.56:1 sure grip diff which was a bit tough on the highway, ha ha) -- I was reading SuperStock & Drag Illustrated magazine and I saw a Studebaker drag car and it made me think about what my grandfather had told me 9 years earlier. I just smiled, knowing that his statement was either 1) a gross exaggeration 2) the GTO driver wasn't racing him, or 3) the GTO was in serious need of of a tuneup. His '60 Lark, IF it had the 4.2 liter engine, was capable of about a 10 second 0-60 time, having about 120 horsepower. I never much cared for his 4-door Lark but I have always admired the Hawk since the first time I saw one. Maybe some day I will run across the right deal and be a lucky owner as well. Sorry for the rant but just wanted to share a 'funny' memory relating to a Stude that was in my family. Take care..
Racer A Lark VIII (that's what Studebaker called the V8 Larks) can be a pretty quick little car but I agree it's unlikely a stock one could be a GTO IF the GTO was healthy AND if the driver knew what he was doing. At times good driver in a slower can can beat an overconfident driver in a faster one... as a gentleman by the name of Ted Harbit, driving Studebakers, has demonstrated more than a few times at the Pure Stock Musclecar Drags. Oh cool, Jeff. Thanks for sharing. Your car looks considerably better than the faded white? car of my grandfather's. I don't even recall if his Lark had a V8 or not. It seemed to be a base model and it had A LOT of room in the engine compartment compared to most visions I had under any car hoods but again, I was only 8. Cool writeup you posted on your site about the Lark's inception too!
And the big irony is- If you don't drive your Ferrari every day, the seals get dry. Then when the owner wants to have fun and jumps into it to have a fling and leans on it, something leaks, and/or something breaks. They must be driven daily for at least a few miles.

Definitely a good point. So far this year I've probably spent about 2k on my F430 on maintenance (and another 2.5k on insurance) and will likely spend another 8k by having capristo headers installed. You just have to accept that an expensive car comes with a premium when it comes to parts and labor. Regular mantenance (oil, brake flush, radiator fluid) comes like at 1k a year, so that is not bad. 15k maintenance might be a little more expensive, but if you are a DIYer and feel bold, you might be able to buy the spark plugs for 30 bucks a pop and do the job yourself and save some cash in the process.

don't think there are any service records for tire shops ... well i mean yes there are if you go in and give them a name and a number but they don't show up on car fax or anywhere else
I think mostly it's best to make the dealer to handle the fixing of the tire because you wouldn't want to be traveling 100mph and something going wrong. And in case something goes wrong, you have full proof that you took caution to fix the tire the way the manufacturer recommends.
