This was a very interesting and thought-provoking video. It kick-started another round of discussion between my writing partner and I, and really got our wheels turning. I'm a character reader myself, but I agree completely that the world matters. If nothing else, it's vital that the characters feel like natural products of the world they live in, and without expanding on and seriously considering every element that's added to the story, that can be difficult to do. Your discussion about fire magic/pyromancy really hit that on the head: you can't introduce a concept like that without considering the myriad of ways this would impact and influence not only your pyromancer character(s) but also the world at large. I had a really fun time listening to this. :)
Jed talking about his Pyromancer book made me curious so I looked it up. Unfortunately it doesnt even have 100 pages. So this is more of a short story but apparently its free on audible if you are subsribed.
This was great, I loved all the insights but something that bugs me is that Herne seems to not have a very good (for lack of a better term) marketing strategy. How? He released multiple book ones and I can’t see the next books in sight so I don’t really want to start those series. I don’t get why he killed momentum for multiple series of his. As Erikson says, always finish what you start because we learn so much more from the harder parts as we go along. Finishing an entire project provides better insight into HOW we get from beginning to end rather than starting a project, getting bored, then starting another project.
When Richard mention that Sci Fi tends to put world building first, characters a far distant second, I immediately thought of Children of Time. Awesome concept, but man that book was such a slog for me to get through on how bland I felt the characters were. All worth it for that ending though.
Thanks for having me on guys! This was a pleasure :)
The crossover I never knew I needed! I will be INHALING this video 🔥
Enjoy!
This episode was a blast to edit due to how interesting & insightful it was. Thanks Jed!

Thanks a bunch for listening!
weekend starting with a bang!
Rich needs to read Malazan if he wants a world that you get thrown into a small part of a massive history
We just recorded that episode, will be out this month!
Hell yeah
His pyromancer magic system sounds a lot like Sympathy from Name Of the Wind
Best way to end my day

I never heard of this term as 'pantser' and I was kinda disturbed by it. I thought GRRM called it architects vs gardener
Thats also another way of describing it

As far as I know, all of his books are standalones
I always want to say Jedi

Lol at anyone paying for writing advice from Jed who hasn't sold more than a handful of self-published e-books.
Respectfull to Jed, all his books are well below average, him speaking as if thought he's an expert is egotistical and disrespecful to authors.
