Nice vid and comparison. I have to disagree on the street cred for model names though. Corolla has much more of an impressive pedigree than a bloody Yaris does.

The GR Yaris is a homolgated rallye car, the GR Corolla is not. So currently, the GR Yaris has better street cred and better potential than a Corolla. They had to make the GR Corolla for the US because average americans won't comfortably fit inside a GR Yaris 😂
@@sepg5084 haha maybe they did. Albeit the Yaris being a homologated rally car, the corolla was rallying before the Yaris was born. rolla's cred/history smashes it out of the park: fast and fun rwd cars/fwd cars, cult classic engines, the AE86 cult classic, the AE86 rolla inspiring the GT86, the AE86 inspiring DK and drifting, the WRC rolla and Formula drift rollas etc. Yaris has one victory from a very boring bland history. I'm hoping we see stud and head gasket kits becoming commonplace by the time people go for big power in the Corolla, since it's now known that the studs and gasket seem to be the first weak point. Honestly, that's probably the best first weak point to have, instead of snapping a rod and sending it through the block or floating a valve and punching a hole in your piston.
I personally believe since it's a JDM car, and they know people will be comparing the Yaris and Corolla, I call it has a different turbo. 3000-4000 rpm vs 3000-5200 does tell has a different ar. But you will know better when you will tune one. Anyways a great video. Thanks for sharing.
The GR Corolla Morizo edition is "nearly 100lb lighter" (CF roof) with a passenger seat, maybe 125lb w/o a passenger seat. Plus it gets a 22 ftlb bump in torque. Evens it up a little bit more in stock form. I'd like to see a stock Yaris run side by side with a Morizo Corolla.
@Motive Video; Gotta agree with you! I am a recent owner of GRC, but would be without if Toyota did not build such an awesome purpose-built car like the GR Yaris. I can only hope to tag along for a ride in a GRY some day, I bet it's a hoot even when not tuned. Have to be thankful overall like you say that Toyota built these and that they are thoroughbred Toyota's unlike the other "GR"s. I came from a 2019 Corolla hatch 6-spd daily never thinking I'd get the opportunity behind the wheel of a GRC, aimed for it thinking the GR couldn't not be worse of course, but man was I surprised how far a step-above it is in comparison. I also own an A80. I love how different it feels in comparison; feels more like a small balanced knife where the A80 is a longsword LOL; the GRY must feel like a throwing star haha!
I’d like a Yaris, most TH-camrs who are freaking out love a Yaris. Problem is we all live in North America so obviously we’re excited to finally get something/anything for once
Sorry, but the really important diff is not the weight --- it's availability!! I can't get the Yaris here in the USA. LOL. Of course with limited production (and greedy Toyota dealers) I probably won't be able to buy the Corolla this year. Another great video. Thanks.
Unfortunately us over here in the US don’t have the option for the gr Yaris :( I was so happy when hearing about the gr Corolla just because we will be able to experience the platform for the first time! Both are awesome cars but I agree with everything, and personally I like 2 door styling more. Great video thanks for the info!
You could have summed up the entire video by saying that a Boltons&tuned GR Yaris gains 100hp vs a Boltons&tuned GR Corolla gains 60hp. This is with a stock turbo, and it's the same thing as you go from there... It's 40hp difference [that a corolla needs extra] stock, 40hp difference [that a corolla doesn't get extra] with boltons, and 40hp difference [that a corolla needs extra] going all out till the block gives up [at about 500hp]. That's it, please drive through.
The Yaris looks so mascular tho still like sort of a sleeper. The Corolla looks like a ... Corolla ... but I think, that most see the Yaris as a "normal" car as well. I think, the Yaris looks so special and fresh.
I'm a huge fan of the channel and hope you guy's don't take this the wrong way but I don't think the second camera angle worked, otherwise great video as always.
The removed weight would be different, larger rear seat is removed, larger carpets areas, if the door cards were removed from the Yaris then 4 door cards with speakers instead of 2. Too much bias towards the Yaris in the video. It’s understandable since that’s what you know but speculating about what another platform would perform like in hypothetical situations…it’s just doesn’t sit right. Thanks for the b roll footage of the Yaris though, super nice build.
Here’s the thing… analysis of parts has shown the GRC engine has a slew of updates including new pistons, cams, valves, valve springs, and likely other parts. Power potential is likely a fair bit higher on the GRC.
Stronger internals dont make an engine more power. Same as an intercooler doesnt make more power. They simply allow more of a threshold to make or power. Air and fuel being the limiting factor, especially for econo boxes. It truly doesnt matter. I do remember gathering the info about a stronger drivetrain.
The pistons and exhaust valves in the GR Corolla are also a different, stronger alloy, as part of the engine being designed for a higher HP output. Also, the exhaust valves are larger, with stiffer valve springs. They are not identical engines. And the GR Corolla, if you are looking from a tuning perspective, might be the more reliable after mods of the two *because* of those differences, and possibly even handle higher power more safely.
They’re being upgraded for an extra 20kW. Our reports is exhaust valves are new material, not larger, and exhaust valves and pistons are not a weak point at 500hp anyway Valve spring upgrade for extra 2psi isnt necessarily going to handle the 35+psi we throw either, so probably still need upgrading
@@MotiveVideo The exhaust valves are also larger, according to Toyota's press release. Still, saying they are identical engines is still not correct. Granted, I can't get the Yaris here anyways, but I'd still rather have the Corolla, and I love smaller cars, I have a Mini JCW currently.
New GR corolla has been reported to have a bigger turbo and more aggressive gearing. It'll be interesting to see if that rings true due to so many varied reports. Looks, the 'rolla wins hands down for me. The Yaris still looks like it's been in a car crusher and pulled out at the wrong moment. It's ugly as sin, to me. In car noise in the Yaris was up there too, so it'll be interesting to see how much quiter the 'rolla is inside. 12 months post release date will show the truth. Good video as usual Andrew, welldone.
Being in America, yes the gr yaris all day long. However, we can’t have it. Thankfully Toyota is giving us the gr corolla. Here’s hope dealer markup won’t be crazy.
Love these videos. With power to weight you do need to consider additional mass such as driver, this would make the cars a little closer. I also suspect a Corolla would have more mass that could be taken out than a Yaris (or at least the same proportion/%). When it comes to track work the Corolla also has a 45mm wider track than the GR Yaris.
Its also longer wheelbase so ratio about the same. Both have same seats, both have rear seats and both have an exhaust. same weight removal strategy would be the same or very close to
Im still really pissed we didnt get the GR Yaris here in the states. That being said I did manage to get on the list for the GR Corolla but I only want the circuit edition and they are only making it for 1 year so I doubt I will be able to get one....
are your sure it's not just that one color for a year? I thought they said it was just that limited to that year for the color. I dont see them just engineering all that bodywork to just sell it for one year
It will be interesting whether the 8 speed auto currently being developed for the GR Corolla will hold the same sort of performance advantage over the manual that a DSG equipped Golf R has over the manual. It may just make up for the extra weight it carries compared to the Yaris in the quarter mile.
Can't have one of these and it not be a proper manual tbh it'd be a hell of a lot more fun to drive , who cares if the auto or dsg or whatever is faster as they're not as much fun 🤔
I’m excited for the Grc here in the states since we can’t get the Yaris. Have a deposit on one wish me luck. I did read somewhere that some components of the engine were upgraded compared to the Yaris
Fair but also remember that the GR corolla has better pistons and probably better valve springs from factory. You'll also be able pull more weight out of the corolla compared to the Yaris I would imagine.
And from what I've heard, it had bigger cams. Which will effect power figures after a tune, so this is all guess work till you get the Rolla on a dyno. But that fact that it has functional back seats, means it wins for anyone that doesn't focus on a drag strip
No one can confirm the parts are different… or the same… (yet). We are assuming no matter which way we assume, so I guess the comments claiming they’re different are just as valid as the video that assumed they’re the same. Interesting video either way. I actually like the middle of the video where it talks more about what’s better for each person based on their wants and needs. End of the day it’s much of a muchness. Horses for courses.
I'm 6'5" and about 215lbs, and I would be heartbroken if they released the yaris in the US, because I don't fit. I, for one, am happy we're getting the corolla, and don't care overly much about the minor differences it'll have with the yaris. The GR Corolla still looks like it will be the best hot hatch available in the US. I'll be trading in my '17 Manual TRD Off-Road Tacoma for it at the first available opportunity.
Imagine sacrificing everything the GRY has over the GRC - calling it minor - because you're a tiny bit taller than average...just get a new seat! Lol, THAT's what I call minor.
@@CosineHyperbolic the yaris also wouldn't suit my daily needs as well as a slightly larger car. I wouldn't be able to fit my physical self or my work equipment into one very easily, and I don't think it's unreasonable to say I'm happy we're getting the corolla which I will actually be able to use. Small cargo space differences are significant in the real world and daily life, and I travel back and forth across the country semi regularly for work. I'll lightly modify a corolla if/when I get my hands on one, and have a usable quick-ish hot hatch to drive around every day. The tenths of a second difference at the ragged edge of the car's performance are a small price to pay for that.
A lot of rumours in the comment section haha but my question is: where is the break cooling duct in the corolla? Do only special editions get a carbon roof unlike all Yaris? No forged BBS wheel option in the corolla (which are 2kg lighter per wheel)? does the special edition Corolla get a racetrack tuned suspension as well like the circuit pack Yaris? Really excited for the Best Motoring comparison of both on Tskuba!
Sounds silly. But I kind of hoped they added an extra cylinder on that engine for the Corolla. Cause in my mind in standard trim the Yaris is a Hyper hatch in the B car segment and the Corolla is a hot hatch in the C car segment. Not that there is anything wrong with being “just” a hot hatch. Just feel like baby brother is out doing big brother.
Isn't the GR Corolla going to have more tuning headroom than the GR Yaris because of the thickened cylinder walls (mentioned by Toyota in an interview I saw), so the actual difference in power:weight is going to be mute when pushed to the limits? Also, you'd be able to strip out more weight from the Corolla than the Yaris as the interior pieces are larger, so that calculation would require some adjustment. I'd still assume it'd favour the Yaris prior to the potential tuning headroom though.
Agreed BUT a Corolla is more practical. For someone who needs a daily driver to get to work and back and is also a "Spirited" driver the Corolla is a way better choice. U might have 50 hp more in terms of weight to power but can you fit 3 additional people plus the driver inside the Yaris and also stop at a grocery store and fit 2 weeks worth of groceries?... So in terms of "bang for buck" which one is REALLY the better choice
The gr yaris is more of a race car you are right but people will try to disagree it funny the corolla will be a slow and lest attractive car thank for saying the truth
Well the Yaris GR is not available in North America. What I am wondering is is it even worth tuning a Corolla GR if you're only running 91 Octane gas and not E85.
there is the diffrence in width and length that will make handling different. Might upset what we think on a circuit. We will see when we start getting our cars. 2nd in line here on the order book for the corolla.
it think the yaris looks much cooler with the more radical wide body and lower roof line and two doors and the fron looks much more racecar/rallye like with the make cooling inlets and boxy design. Yes very subjective.
A 2 door corolla would've been mad tbh ,it's funny I'd actually prefer the 5 door as it's just way more practical for me personally, for the price tag I could only afford to have 1 car , they'll be about 70k here in oz ,would make a great daily/weekend warrior for sure though 👍
Well motive buy a circuit corolla and re do the experiment then we all know for sure 😉 Also looking at other gr corolla vids they have upgraded the engine/internals which may help with that head gasket issue 🤙🏻
Edit: Nevermind I just remembered that the Corolla is a 5 door car, so most of the weight will come from the extra doors. Original: Personally I don’t think there’s 300+ more pounds of metal in the Corolla, probably most of that weight comes from interior options and entertainment system. Probably comparing wheelbase sizes may shed some light into this.
Lol. Love the dig at the uk dynos. I remember watching a UK channel and they had an 07 sti on there with “450bhp” The Thing ran like a low 13 at 104mph. Sandbagging much, my stock wrx with a tune is quicker Haha. Good comparison, however I think alot of people will get one purely for the 4 doors and being more “useable” as such. Would be happy with either one.
I live in UK and only watch this channel for tuning updates because the UK tuning industry is so corrupt and all most tuners do is spread misinformation for profit. UK dynos are 100% not to be trusted.
I don’t know if I missed it but I do remember the Corolla will come with forged pistons that the Yaris doesn’t. Plus for me the Corolla will be needed for Daddy duty

Seen 3sgte's stuffed into starlets and they're engine bays are tiny in comparison so if they can do that a 2.4 into a corolla is piss easy.
On that though they could've just used the current corolla 1.8/2L and re engineered it slightly to be a turbo engine no problems.
Toyota missed an opportunity there and being u can buy a golf or a Merc turbo 4 cyl for the same money.
In case your unaware these 3cyls are extremely high strung from the factory, they run like 28/30psi stock ,a 4 could make the same power on 12/14psi which 1 makes it less stressed and 2 more potential for hp gains. 👍
Nice vid and comparison. I have to disagree on the street cred for model names though. Corolla has much more of an impressive pedigree than a bloody Yaris does.
Sure does, I remember as a teen in the late 90s ke55s were all the rage ,was a mad ke55 coupe up the road from where we lived that was sick and I wanted it so bad lol, had twin webbers on a Celica twin cam 1600 with the ol super trap muffler on Simmons mesh wheels , thing was roudy af 👌
Either way though the future looks good for Toyota.
@@sepg5084 tell that to the average American in the south. No matter how many times I tried explaining it, it always ended with "but it's a YARIS lol"/"c'mon, a Yaris?"
@@joelllux88 Yaris is co developed by the tommy makkinen rallye team, i don't think you can have more street cred than that haha but tbh if i'd see a yaris on the street it would be more special than the corolla, it's just more bespoke and very different to the standard yaris.
Thanks for adding those imperial stats for us American folk, trust your guys word on modifying these cars over some of the stuff I hear in the states.
I fall into the 'lightly modified daily' category. I'll take the Rolla, you're right that 2 more doors count ;-)
i'm just happy there will be more parts development for the 3 pot
Good video and I agree. Weight is going to play a major part on how the cars will compare to each other in performance.
Its all boost in the tune mate
Same turbo
Thank you for bringing up the market value of the GR Yaris 💪
Never selling mine 🙅
@@akaYOOOOO Same! Hope to pass it on to my daughter lol
Let’s not forget GR Yaris won 2021 WRC Championship , Triple crown n that’s Badass 🤘🏼
I recently bought a GR Yaris. Would definitely have waited for a GR Corolla if it was to be available in the UK.
I’d like a Yaris, most TH-camrs who are freaking out love a Yaris. Problem is we all live in North America so obviously we’re excited to finally get something/anything for once
I agree 100% lighter is better specially you take one piston off the weight is so important I agree💯
Is this why its easier to go faster in a lambo compared to a R35? That lotus fella was onto something
Just what I was looking for, good job mate.
Sorry, but the really important diff is not the weight --- it's availability!! I can't get the Yaris here in the USA. LOL. Of course with limited production (and greedy Toyota dealers) I probably won't be able to buy the Corolla this year. Another great video. Thanks.
Really top quality video Andrew. Need more of these videos
So glad the GR Corolla will be carrying a small motorbike worth of extra air bags and emissions devices
As someone who's actually been in a crash, the more airbags the better
Emissions on the other hand... 🙄
What I learned from this video: Tim Tams are amazing.
Imagine if they made a car with this powertrain to compete with the Kona N. A lifted AWD hatch would do wonders in the states!
I feel like this happened with the Mitsubishi 1st gen EVO and the 1st gen GSX.
Regardless both are fucking amazing 👌
The 1st gen Galant vr4 was better
I think that sums it up, I'd take the Corolla for a daily & prefer a bit bigger than the Yaris, but as just a toy the Yaris
This can be a 30 second video. Yes, a Yaris with the same powerplant as the Corolla will be faster than the Corolla. Good job.
We kind if like facts to support arguments
The Yaris looks so mascular tho still like sort of a sleeper.
The Corolla looks like a ... Corolla ... but I think, that most see the Yaris as a "normal" car as well.
I think, the Yaris looks so special and fresh.
Didn't talk about aero, apparently GR Corolla cp has a lot of functional bits. Also has a flat floor (apparently).
Will be 3/5ths of stuff all different
I'm a huge fan of the channel and hope you guy's don't take this the wrong way but I don't think the second camera angle worked, otherwise great video as always.
Exceptional video and talk aw always.
This chanel is severly underrated
I don’t know if it will make a difference but you have to also take in consideration that the Corolla GR has stronger internals
does it? do you have a source for that?
Stronger internals dont make an engine more power. Same as an intercooler doesnt make more power. They simply allow more of a threshold to make or power. Air and fuel being the limiting factor, especially for econo boxes. It truly doesnt matter. I do remember gathering the info about a stronger drivetrain.
@@Bikini_ST I didn’t say it would make more power because it has stronger internals, and I agree with what you’re saying
Slightly. The pistons are slightly modified to handle the bit more boost. That's it.
@@phg4977 more boost more dates
I think the pistons are different in the Corolla
The pistons and exhaust valves in the GR Corolla are also a different, stronger alloy, as part of the engine being designed for a higher HP output. Also, the exhaust valves are larger, with stiffer valve springs. They are not identical engines. And the GR Corolla, if you are looking from a tuning perspective, might be the more reliable after mods of the two *because* of those differences, and possibly even handle higher power more safely.
They’re being upgraded for an extra 20kW. Our reports is exhaust valves are new material, not larger, and exhaust valves and pistons are not a weak point at 500hp anyway
Valve spring upgrade for extra 2psi isnt necessarily going to handle the 35+psi we throw either, so probably still need upgrading
I want the Yaris more, but I’m not super disappointed that we only get the Corolla in Canada.
Depends on what you're doing, getting groceries or rally.
Both have same seats, both have rear seats and both have an exhaust. same weight removal strategy would be the same or very close to
To be fair, more interior = more weight to pull out. Even if it is only 25lbs more.
What more interior does it have? rear door trims is it
@@MotiveVideo larger rear seats, more headliner, more insulation, more carpet, larger trunk, door cards.
Street cred?
Rolla!
Now what's street cred 😂
Im still really pissed we didnt get the GR Yaris here in the states. That being said I did manage to get on the list for the GR Corolla but I only want the circuit edition and they are only making it for 1 year so I doubt I will be able to get one....
are your sure it's not just that one color for a year? I thought they said it was just that limited to that year for the color. I dont see them just engineering all that bodywork to just sell it for one year
So, when you gonna build a Corolla then?
I’m curious to see how close they can get with extra weight of the Corolla
Super interesting video, though living in the U.S., we can’t compare anything between the two cars in the real world! Ha
It will be interesting whether the 8 speed auto currently being developed for the GR Corolla will hold the same sort of performance advantage over the manual that a DSG equipped Golf R has over the manual. It may just make up for the extra weight it carries compared to the Yaris in the quarter mile.
Do you have a link discussing this auto trans? I've not seen any talk of an auto gr corolla.
I did see a few pictures of a auto gr yaris apparently testing an auto gearbox but who knows with picture editing these days lol

No one we’ve asked can confirm that.
And doesn’t atop head lifting
And from what I've heard, it had bigger cams. Which will effect power figures after a tune, so this is all guess work till you get the Rolla on a dyno.
But that fact that it has functional back seats, means it wins for anyone that doesn't focus on a drag strip
You guys spend too much time in forums. If you don't have the Toyota parts numbers to compare then it's bullshit.
@@wudntulike2no32 does your mum work at Toyota mine does and she still loves her Datsun.
6'5 is tall but not that tall I think Shak would be more upset if he couldn't fit into a Yaris.
@@lukemothug3744 no, it's not that tall, but it's tall enough to not comfortably fit into a yaris, which is the point I was making.
@@harleyschopp2381 Well sure, all that makes much more sense regarding why you'd prefer the GRC!

Weve seen others experience it but we never did.

Hahaha great video, you had me at 1:57 😂
I hope you can buy the circuit spec rear spoiler and put it on the core model rolla
PLS BUILD A COROLLA the way you’d build the 3cyl now having a good perspective of it’s quirks and limitations. Maybe a rally version for more views?
Can't wait for the gr corolla🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sounds silly. But I kind of hoped they added an extra cylinder on that engine for the Corolla. Cause in my mind in standard trim the Yaris is a Hyper hatch in the B car segment and the Corolla is a hot hatch in the C car segment. Not that there is anything wrong with being “just” a hot hatch. Just feel like baby brother is out doing big brother.
Inthat case at its stock form, it will be a 400hp car. Giving some chills at Supra or even a GTR... 🤔🔥🔥
@@el-kenepo that’s what I was thinking. Putting it in the category with the RS3 and A45S
Correction- Mexico got 300 Gr Yaris. So yes North America did received the wrc Yaris.
Are the track widths the same? Is the Corolla wider? Wider tire
80mm longer and 40mm wider
wheelbase to track ratio is bugger all different
I think longer wheelbase on the Corolla might help with top speed stability.
What about looks? Corolla has it there over the Yarris big time.
Like we said, subjective
And the Core GR Corolla is pretty bland
Circuit corolla looks pretty aggressive. Personally and as a biased GR Yaris owner I think the Yaris looks more sleek.
@@MotiveVideo Definitely subjective, I think the Yaris is god awful ugly. But quite enjoy the rolla.
it think the yaris looks much cooler with the more radical wide body and lower roof line and two doors and the fron looks much more racecar/rallye like with the make cooling inlets and boxy design. Yes very subjective.
I was excited for the gr Yaris until I heard it wasn't available in the US. Why do companies keep thinking everyone wants a 4-5 door
A 2 door corolla would've been mad tbh ,it's funny I'd actually prefer the 5 door as it's just way more practical for me personally, for the price tag I could only afford to have 1 car , they'll be about 70k here in oz ,would make a great daily/weekend warrior for sure though 👍
As standard, how long lasting will that engine be? many buys Yaris or Corolla as a daily car also.. how will they do as a long term?
Well motive buy a circuit corolla and re do the experiment then we all know for sure 😉
Also looking at other gr corolla vids they have upgraded the engine/internals which may help with that head gasket issue 🤙🏻
none of the “rumoured” upgrades will fix the head gasket/head lift issue and all rumours so far
What's the weight distribution of the GR Yaris?
How much extra weight could you get out of the GR corolla with the extra trim etc? Would it bring it down to being closer at all?
Very unlikely
The big weight savers same in both
Edit: Nevermind I just remembered that the Corolla is a 5 door car, so most of the weight will come from the extra doors.
Original: Personally I don’t think there’s 300+ more pounds of metal in the Corolla, probably most of that weight comes from interior options and entertainment system. Probably comparing wheelbase sizes may shed some light into this.
Lol. Love the dig at the uk dynos. I remember watching a UK channel and they had an 07 sti on there with “450bhp”
The Thing ran like a low 13 at 104mph.
Maybe the uk and usa are right and the aussies are conservative, who knows. More importantly who cares its a silly comparison to make anyway.
Now, if only Hyundai brought out an all wheel drive i20/i30. That would be a comparison I'd like to see.
an i30 would weigh over 1600kgs in awd.
the kona is awd
Your thoughts on the GR Corolla Morizo Edition?
I assume that the frontal area is also bigger and therefore a disadvantage in the corolla.
I don’t know if I missed it but I do remember the Corolla will come with forged pistons that the Yaris doesn’t. Plus for me the Corolla will be needed for Daddy duty
