Fender American Jazz vs Spector Rebop 5DLX Comparison

  • In this video I am comparing two different basses through different amps to try to determine which sound best suits the song.
This was a surprising situation for me as I assumed that I would simply use the same bass and rig that resulted in such an excellent tone on the last session... To my dismay that growly tone did not work at all for this song, which begs for a different style.

The Spector all day, more punch by far...

The fender all day long for that tune. Smoother and less rattle.

As someone who was a fender guy and currently using both a old spector q4 with a 18 volt tone capsule and a new spector euro 5 lt (violet burst ash body wings) i say each bass plays a part depends on the take and band my first choice will be spector all day though. Beautiful zebra wood on that rebop 5 dlx man does it have the tonepump? Or is it a older one with the emg bts?

Hmmm...interesting! I was impressed with the punch and clarity of the Fender in Test Track 2 "Model 30," and likewise from the Spector in Test Track 5 "Pedalboard with Dual Signal Path." I think the Spector shined in that last track, but the Fender dominated all of the rest. Thanks for the video comparisons!

Hey Lonnie quick question, did you ever post a video on Kazaa of you playing bass? Specifically playing Marcus Miller's "Power"?

Hey! Very good video, mate! I would choose the fender for sure! Atleast for this particular song ;) Im a spector-fanboy since im a metalplayer, you can hear the grit of the spector here and it does not fit the song!

I’m a Custom Spector “ReBop” & Mike Lull Jazz Guy, so this is right up my alley! Firstly, all but 1 of my Spectors have Nordstrand “Big Single” pickups & Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP preamps, so they have more than a bit of “Jazz Tone” mixed into their unique tone.
However, even straight I’d pick Track #3, the Spector thru the Line6 X3: to my ears the fills pop out more than the Jazz Bass. However, if it were more than a one-guitar band I might go for the Jazz, which IMO cut thru more compared to a *stock* Spector ReBop.

      1st and 2nd...
The rest sound too hollow in my opinion...
I'm surprised with the Rebop because I am not a fan of the EMG HZ pickups at all.

More videos should use the video vantage points you used. We get a nice view of what you're playing.

Spectors with the trim tone pump need lots of help. That being said, an EMG BT or an Aguilar OBP-2 put inside that Spector and you'll never put it down. I've had the sAme dillema o Ed the years and my solution is always 3 factors.1. Do I like the feel of the bass2. Do I like the playability3. Do I like the sound A. Can I change the sound 1. Yes. Then go to B. 2. No. then go to C. B. Change preamp and maybe pickups 1. Did that fix the problem, does it sound like the guy churning bass it should? 1. Yes. Congratulations you now have one sock. Kick ass bass 2. No. Then go to C C. This bass is not for you, sell it dirt cheap to a Spector club owner and buy another bass.

For that Genre The Fender. You don't want to overpower the drums.

The Fender sounds best. Save the Spector for live performances.
