- MID HANDICAPPER WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH THESE NEW CLUBS! buying new golf clubs is an exciting time and a big moment, but which golf clubs should you buy? should you buy expensive golf clubs? should you buy cheap golf clubs? should you buy second hand golf clubs? should you get fitted for new golf clubs? in this video I take our mid handicap golfer out on the golf course with a brand new set of Taylormade P790 irons, but not just any... the P790 Ti irons, the expensive ones. what will we find? will they perform better than his ping i210 irons? are they the best feeling irons of 2019? maybe they will be the best irons of 2020? are they the best mid handicap irons? lets find out... and lets do it now!
How would I feel with these in my bag? Scared stiff in case my wife found out how much I'd spent!
Taylormade aeroburner irons and paid £150 for them. As a beginner with the correct grip it was forgiveness that won me over then once I've found my swing I'll get a fitted set.
I went from Taylormade Burners off the rack to PXG fitted and I absolutely love them. I bought them for half the price thanks to the heroes program.
I am in love with the h2no bag, I have last year's model in black, I live in Montana and sun mountain sports headquarters is right in my back yard
I am using the cobra king f9 standard length irons 4 through 9s. Love them and worth every penny spent. Only cost me $800 usd. Tax free also.
The T.I references we’re lost on Mark, glad you got him to bring em’ out though lol
These videos are great for someone like me who is a high handicapper who can play mid handicap on occasion - always wondering if better equipment would elevate my game. What I gather from all your videos with Mark is that if it feels good to you go for it (if you can afford it). You still have to put a good swing on the ball to make it fly straight. For most of us a "better" set of irons, wedges, etc... won't make us play markedly better. As the swing/consistency advances so will our ability to appreciate better clubs.
But TM ti might of performed better if they were custom fitted to mark like the pings are
PXGs in my bag. I got them before the other “premium” brands were developed. The issue with Taylormade and Callaway is that they have other models to compete with so they need to make their premium clubs stand out. PXG now has several models to choose from so that is even changing. I think you spend what you are comfortable spending and what you enjoy playing. That being said, I don’t see many low handicap players sporting the Top Flight starter sets...
Using the MP-20 MMC 4-P C130X. Cost 1,200 with the fitting fee. Love that there was no upcharge on the shaft, Mizuno doing the right thing.
i am a strong believer of buying golf clubs you like visually rather than which perform better i went for the 2017 p790's i think they are the nicest looking irons out (personal preference) i couldn't hit them at first but now i have learnt with them, i couldn't imagine looking down at a club i thought was ugly just because i hit that iron the best in the fitting.
I'm 61 years old and I started golfing about a year and a half ago. At first I used a set of my late father's clubs. The irons and the woods( actual woods) my mother had bought for my dad for a present when I was around 9 or 10. They were a mixed bag of 2nd hand clubs. I fell in love with the game and a year ago I was fitted and bought a set of Callaway rogues. I believe they were about $950.
Mark is becoming a star of your videos. As a mid-handicapper he speaks for many of us and with your professional input it makes for an informative and thoroughly enjoyable video, Top notch
I'm currently playing with a set of Taylormade burner 2.0 irons, had them from new as a gift and still doing me well. Another great video guys
Hi James. When I renew my irons I wait until they've been replaced by next years' model so I usually get them much cheaper. I bought a lovely new set of Ping irons last year and they were a third cheaper than the 400's with pretty much the same 'tech'. The G irons are really superb!!
Just returning to the game after a 13 year sabbatical, fitted for Ping g410 5 to SW with 410 hybrid, 3 wood and driver (bought seperatley from e bay) currently on a course of lessons in order to come out all guns blazing next spring, enjoying the content
Playing the mp20 line 4-5 hmb..
6-pw mb
Thanks James for the review, after watching your review of the MPs I decided to go look at them and got fitted for them, always played callaway clubs and the MPs were the right switch
Currently playing Adams golf GT tight lies. Second, possibly third hand from the local sports resale shop. 3 to L wedge. $45. It’s my first set, I’ll get fitted and buy new when I feel like I have a golf swing that doesn’t change week to week.
Have him try the new Cleveland UHX irons please.
I'm with Mark, I think they're ugly. I wouldn't use them even if they were free!
But.... If someone wants to give me a set, I'll sell them and buy some MP20s 😂😂😂
The same here. Those clubs are ugly as hell. Would also prefere the MP20, because Mizuno makes the most beautiful clubs. I still love playing my MP60s I bought back in 2008.
Ping i20...paid $125 used. Could not pass up the deal because they were like new. Shafts were in excellent condition and grooves were great. Some use but not alot. I will get at least 3 years more out of them.
Spriggsy, that swing you have been working on, is really coming out nice
I play the cobra king forged MB/CB set. I paid $1250 CAD incl. fitting, and aftermarket shafts. Not the longest, but you'll have to pry them out of my cold , dead hands. I would 1000% recommend you compare them to the MP20s
Good video. I just got fitted for a set of Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal. Paid $750 for them. I went into the fitting thinking I wanted the Taylor Made P790's. But the Mizuno's just felt better and preformed better for me.
Taylor made burners second had freebies from my brother. Started in June down to 18 handicap. Not buying new clubs until Ive been playing for more than a year. As I always stop in the winter and go awol. I'm playing right through this year to keep momentum.
Got ping eye . Black dot 1978 £18 and have Dunlop 65 full set bag trolley £10 . Happy days 12 hcp
I am currently hitting Callaway X-forged 2009 irons. I bought them used in June for $260 3-PW. I love them so far. Big step up from the cheap beginner slazenger clubs o was hitting
I’m gaming the Mizuno 919 Forged 4-P that I was fitted for. I also have a set of MP18 SC’s 4-P. I bought them used and mainly for a set that I would lend to friends that come into town that couldn’t pack their clubs.
I love my mizuno jpx800 pros! Only $185 4 thru Pw too. I have you to blame for my mizuno obsession James.
I’m playing Ping i210’s 5-U, £980 but then I had to add 54 & 58 deg wedges and a Titleist 818H1 rescue to make my “iron set”! I tried the P790 and hated them before my Ping fitting!
As a mid handicapper myself after a 16 years layoff from golf on a single figure when i stopped, I am keen to progress back to blades. Happy tho that there are Ferrari and Porsche Style Golf clubs for those that desire such a thing. Loft is irrelevant if tech is providing the same launch angles.
The thing about distance irons for me is.... if i have a 5i that now plays like my 4i and a PW that plays like my 9i and so on through the bag, I would feel inclined to add maybe another wedge to cover the gap at the lower end of my bag so essentially I end up with a bag that covers the same distances as before and I haven't really gained anything...
Just returning to the game after a 13 years sabbatical, fitted fro Ping G410 5 to SW, $10 hybrid 3 wood and driver, currently on a course of lessons in order to come out all guns blazing next spring !!
I think the reason Mark is having such a hard time striking the taylormade TI is the weight difference. His Ping irons are most likely heavier than the Taylormade. When I swing light irons, I get a ton of thin and bottom groove hits. I would be interested to the swing weights of the TI irons matched to Marks clubs ping clubs and then redo this test. Great video.
Ironically my brand new Mizuno JPX919 Hot Metal Pro irons In the mail yesterday. Got fitted at Golf Tech. We put the steel fiber i95 shafts in them so it upped the price a little. Just over $1,100.00
Can’t wait for some warm weather
Bought set of f MP62 SST Pured - 3-PW - NS Pro 1150 Stiff with newish Icomic grips - good condition - £105 second hand plus set of MP64 PX 5.5 with newly fitted MC grips 5-pw for £123 both of auction site - feel great - if I were spending this sort of money would go for new MP20 with full fitting! Hey James if you want to try those MP62 happy to send them to you for a trial - as long as you send them back 👍
For what it's worth I'd have to agree about the smaller heads. I play off 14, but I find most game improvement clubs have such a thick top line and so much offset that I'm inclined to fiddle with them too much at setup, and the smaller heads of other irons give me more confidence/ incentive to hit the middle
I picked up Ping i20 5-UW, Ping g20 3 & 4 iron, sent down to Ping for loft and lie adjustments, shipping, everything, all under $300
Hi James, I currently using srixon z765 5iron to wedge..cost £658. I cannot understand where these TM clubs fit in with any golfer. There are lots of forgiving clubs out there and don't cost that kind of money. 2500 pounds gets you clubs irons, woods,a bag and a power trolly..
I currently play the srixon Z545 4-Pw ove the way they feel currently play of a 4 Handicap. As my swing improved and workability improves idconsider switchung ro the mizuno mp20s or more bladed srixon version. my srixons cost me about $600-$700. but can not complain about them.
Titleist T200 5-PW. I got them a month ago for £859. I absolutely love them.
Callaway apex pro cupface 16's $950 US 5-pw...project X 6.0 liked them enough to buy the 4 iron this year but have to get whatever standard shaft it has in it and switch to 6.0
Using TM SLDR with kbs tour shafts. What should I upgrade too.
I love the Kbr shafts btw.
I play Ping i210's, great clubs, easy to get in the air and go the distance! Stick with the Pings! 👍
Great work as always chaps, the on course videos are my preferred content so please keep it going. The Ping clubs look far better the the TaylorMade’s effort, which isn’t something people would perhaps have said a few short years ago.
I purchased the mlzumo hot metal pros back in April and the price was $1200.00 but I work at a golf course and the pro was able to get a very good discount for the employees so I actually paid $692.00 for gap wedge to 4 iron.
I'm using Titleist 714 AP1 irons. Happy with them.
I use Tour Edge HL3, came with a 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 6 iron wood, 7 iron wood, 8&9 iron, and a pitching wedge for $490 US.
James could you road test the new titleist exp 01 balls never seen them before let alone heard of them till this afternoon
Right... as long as it’s recyclable.
Currently playing Taylormade Burner 2.0s. 2nd £200 from Gumtree. I like them but reckon Ill be trying to ger a new custom fit 5 to 9 next year and a new set of wedges (PW to LW).
Not sure about the P790 Ti's. The black tungsten (in the videos) looks like a lump of cheap plastic.
Taylormade burner 2.0 stiff shaft I hit them very well
But like the look of the mp20
I’m between the I210s and the JPX 919 Forged, any input on which clubs you would go for?
I’m using the new Apex Pro. They were $830 on a discount from Callaway
Sold my Mizuno MP32s after I broke my wrist, and got something softer...
JPX 800 Pro, Project X 5.5 graphite shaft, 1". 2 degree upright, Steel Weight heads (lots of tape under the grips!)
5i - 9i, plus 52 gap (low bounce), 56 bent to 55 (High bounce), 60 (low bounce) from the then wedge range.
My wrists are much stronger than they were, time for a new fitting? But £150/club is not happening soon!
Using Apex Pro 16irons 5 - 9 iron cost me £540 fitted by club pro. Already had Mac daddy 3 wedges 46,52,58.
Wondering if MHM (mid handicap Mark) has tried either the Srixon Z585 or Z785 or combo set..
Hey James and Mark...could you do a review of the Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo irons...I recently bought a 4 iron but haven't been able to test it yet do to cold weather...( Canada eh ) I'll have to wait to get indoors...Thanks...Currently clubing the TM-M4
Cleveland 588cb irons.....was gaming mizuno mp57's before
Currently gaming Mizuno MP 69's I picked up from Ebay for $300
Found myself a nice set of Titleist AP1 710s from 3-PW for only $180 at a local pawn shop. Loving the set so far compared to my old kmart golden bear set LOL
Cobra F8 one length. Cost me 600 USD. Been playing with them for A year and have seen my game improve shot my best round 2 weeks ago shot a 90. Which is really good for me.
King cobra fp and 200 but it came with a set of nike sling shot irons also
5-pw 690 CB,s (just gorgeous) 4,5 iron in T300's to give me a little help. Yrst two 5 irons but purely down to what the lofts are. Cost £820
Taylormade rocketbladez cost me 130 quid secondhand. Love them 👍🏻
Completely agree with Mark. They look a lot cheaper than they cost! I would want them to look a lot nicer for the money.
TaylorMade PSI, bought earlier this year, new for $406.00.
Currently using Mizuno MP32s. Paid $80 on EBay for 3-PW almost new condition. I lengthened the shafts and re-gripped them for about another $40. There is nothing any club manufacturer could realistically offer that would make me drop $3k on a set of irons.
I am currently using the Slazenger V300 irons which cost me a whopping £25. I am a beginner golfer and have only been playing golf for 4 months, so dont want to splash out on half decent clubs yet.
Cobra F9 One Lengths 8 piece custom set - $914 US, new. I was fitted - +1" 1 degree upright.
But the loft will have an influence on spin. So, even though the trajectory is similar the lower spin will allow the similar numbered club to travel further in the air.
Mizuno JPX 850 irons. Cost me £480 brand new.
I love the new 790’s look and design but certainly do not like the TI version. You’d certainly need “stacks on deck” to be able to afford them too!
@JAMES I've been really curious about the Mizunos verses Ping I210. James, can you get the mid handy capper's perspective on them? I love my recent change from the 410s to the I210s and I can't imagine anything buttery feeling than the I210s. Thanks for any help.
I am currently using ping G400 irons 4 through Pw. Stock stiff shafts black dot. I paid 400 dollars for them. They were demo clubs but they were in perfect condition. No Mark's or anything.
Titleist t100. Amazing feel and launch. Changed from the AP2 2016. Around £200 per club. Very happy with my new babies. 😍😍😍
I play Titleist 2018 ap1 irons, ping g driver and T3 fairway . $700 aud
Currently playing a second hand set of 2009 Taylormade TP with s300. BUT..........New Mizuno MP20 HMB arrive THIS WEEK !!! The Mizuno shaft measure thingy has given me Project X 6.5's 💪
I'm using lynx Predator irons, 5 to pw £100. But now looking at 2019 P790s
Isn’t marks pings 3/4” longer then the Taylormades? Hence why a lot of marks shots where skinny?
Mate I played a round with a Slazenger and a Dunlop lol using p790 s
James,
You've consistently referred to Mark as a Mid-Handicap Golfer but he has definitely gotten much better since you've been working with him. My question is, what was his handicap when you first took him under your wing and what is his handicap now. He strikes the ball quite good and seems to get about really well on the course. If I'm to be honest, I would think he's around an 8-12 type player.
I just bought a set of preowned M1 for 458$ Love them and there is no absolut need to spend so much on a set of irons .
Currently gaming full set of c300 forged but hopefully having pw-7 in Wilson model blades for next season :)
Mark already strikes the ball well, I'd like to see what help these would give to the high handicapper 24+
I use the Nike VR Pro combo forged irons, bought new in 2012 - 3-PW with KBS shafts, was about £650 I think. Sound great, feel amazing and look stunning 👍⛳
KZG PC III. $100 preowned from ebay. The quality is excellent.
I feel he plays better with his clubs because of familiarity and confidence. Here swung a lot smoother and with more confidence with his clubs.
Currently playing Titleist CB’s. I have also bought a couple sets of Miura and Scratch irons and both were expensive mistakes 🤦♂️
I use mizuno mp54's at a cost of £180 ,love them for their look and feel
I play Cleveland cg16 irons and I got them from my buddy who only used them 3 times but he spent 600 or so i think
I play the Adam's blue irons stiff and I payed £200 for them 3-pw. Bought as 2nd hand in my local golf store but still had the wrapping on 👌
Using Callaway Rogue 6 - G (hybrids above as a 28 senior), cost £350 second hand.
Just got fit for Titleist T100's 4-PW with KBS C-Taper. Cost about $1350
I’m gaming Ping i E1’s at the mo, purchased last summer for £195 and ♥️ them ...
Like Mark I game i210s but impressed that Mark uses a 4i - too hard for me, 23 degree hybrid is much easier.
I really like the P790s but P790Ti is too expensive, an unnecessary club that is glammed up for the sake of it
In my bag: Mizuno JPX EZ. 4i - lob wedge. 2016 model. Purchased new in 2018 for $489. If I bought the $2,700 Taylormade? I'd be terrified to scratch them.
It maybe good for tour players but not for average golfers. It is like a comparison of Rolex vs Timex. Enjoyed the video. Keep it coming.
Great to see Mark testing and reviewing these clubs but it must have been difficult for Mark because he was fitted for his irons and not the taylormade’s but he gave the best honest review he could 👏👏
I'm using mizuno mp57s and I paid €140. There kinda a mix between cavities and muscle backs so just perfect for me
I still use my 2008 Cobra Pro CB irons
Hi James I play with Titleist 718 AP1's as I'm new to golf they are very forgiving for me. I payed £500 for a new set from 5 - PW & GW
