  • This video is a follow up to the Lotus Esprit Restomod vs Lotus Esprit stock video that I created with my good friend Mark a few weeks back. We were so overwhelmed by the views and comments that the only way we both felt we could address them was answering you guys in a video.
    This is the first video of two that provide context to Mark, talking you through his automotive journey and what his thinking was behind certain things he’s done to his car. The second part which is coming shortly after this one will directly answer all the comments you guys left on the video no matter what they were.
    Hopefully this is the best solution and please do give Mark the respect he deserves for not only talking everyone around his car but also coming back to answer all your questions on it, he’s really put himself out there where most wouldn’t.
    There is a link to Marks website below along with Tomorrows Classics who did all the work on Marks car.
    Please like and subscribe as it means the world to me.

    I look back at part one again fantastic work Mark. I know people who have owned there Lotus for over 40 years and keep it standard I also know people who have had there car for 40 years and modified them to suit their needs in my opinion both are correct. Cheers Jim

    Thanks gents. Another great and informative vid. As both you and the people commenting here have said - there's valid arguments for both resto philosophies. I am on the side of "being able to use it when you want to" rather than only when the weather is optimal (but of course there's a line between original/style etc versus too much towards "soul less modernity"). Very good comparison and photos of how the dark/coloured sills disguise the ride height! Maybe when you have a moment you could add a brief interview with the guy from Tomorrows Classics who did a lot of the suspension work? His perspective might be interesting too. All the best to everyone for 2022!

      Thanks for the kind words and advice. There is a more technical and detailed video coming out tomorrow and then another one a couple of days after going into more detail about each part of the car and answer all the comments that were made in the original video.

    I've done nearly 100,000 miles in my unmodified S2 since I bought it. I drive it all year round. I wouldn't hesitate jumping in my car tomorrow and doing a 2000 mile round trip to the otherside of Europe, which I have done on 3 occasions. I love the 'standardness' of my car. I find it a little annoying when our cars get reliability-bashed unnecessarily. Yes, if your car is not 'sorted' you will have problems so best to fix them before blaming the car for breaking down. More likely the PO is to blame. Yes, I have had issues with my car, it's mechanical after all but I'm sure I've avoided more problems than I've had because the car gets used all the time. I wouldn't bat an eyelid following Mark down to Monaco tomorrow, assuming I could keep up!

    Callum. Personally if I had your car I'd get the engine rebuilt and the cooling system, electrics sorted. I'd paint the sills and front lower spoiler black and upgrade the lights. I'd also drop the gear lever height. But other than that I'd leave the rest as original as possible.

      Completely understand why you’d do the things you mentioned, and I would agree with you. However cost is a big factor and my current plans for the car must be considered…. 🤐

    Wow I'd forgotten I was subscribed to this channel 😂 it's been so long since I watched the original video 😂 To answer your question about video length though Yes I would watch a 45 minute video even an hour's worth. If the content is good then that's all that's matters. Anyway thanks for the video m8 but try and not leave it as long between uploads if you can help it buddy. Peace. 👍😎 Oh and Merry Christmas to you and your family. ☃️🎄☃️☃️🎄☃️

    Great discussion. Personally I would go Restomod. I would keep the exterior absolutely stock and modify the engine and electrical so I would be confident enough to take it out on a week vacation/holiday. These cars are meant to be on the road not wasting away in a garage. I understand the desire to keep it completely stock but it's just not practical. There's currently a yellow 1978 S1 for sale here in the states. They are asking almost $50k for it. It has a lot of mod's to it but it's in good mechanical condition. I would buy it right now if I could afford it.

      Getting the balance between my car and Marks car is tough, but it’s something to strive for.
      S1’s are really crazy money at the moment and I feel Lotus is a brand that’s only going in one direction, up.

    I absolutely LOVE the Esprit! But at 6'7" I can only admire them from a distance.
    I do have a 1982 Alfa Romeo GTV6, a 2+2 so I can get more space and have installed a thin shelled racing seat extra low for more head room.

    I am definitely open to restomod, but I keep doubting .
    f.e. I would love to transform my S2.2. from double dellorto setup to trottle bodies with EFI. It didn't happen yet because the S2.2 is so rare and because I did restore my dellortos to good working condition. Still, EFI and electronic injection would make the 912 engine start and run smoother in all conditions
    On the other hand , I could not change my restored speedline alloys to bigger wheels, but that does restrict me in having bigger disks and calipers.

    I always find it brave when non tecnical minded people want to own and drive classic cars. I would be terrified every time I drove it. For me being able to restore it and fix it when it breakes is a huge part in classic car ownership.

    • @calazam118
      @calazam118  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is terrifying trust me! And I wish I could be born with all the knowledge I need. However I’m trying to learn where I can from people who’ve been working on these wonderful cars for years and try to be as present as possible when the works being done so hopefully one day I can do it myself.

    Power output of any original Esprits not modified is just pathetic.. If the engine, suspension, brakes, cooling etc, etc are not massively upgraded then the Esprit will be just a thing to look at.. But not drive and then the owner will find the dream is really not the reality.
    There is perhaps an argument to keep the looks and build a ground up new version that actually works and is not an unreliable horror like the original one.. I suspect it would be an EV under current thinking..

      I might be wrong but I'm guessing you don't own a esprit, I've a 85 esprit s3, the third ive owned, I maintain it myself and its not let me down in 3 years , it's a fantastic car to drive I've upgraded brakes suspension, ok ,, its only got around 160 bhp, less than the average family saloon , but its so much more than 0..60 . Or top speed, the way the car makes you feel is what is important I've owned ferrari Aston Martin, seriously powerful cars, but not enjoyed them as much, and in truth on a winding road I would keep up with any modern car, lots have tried 😉, my everyday driver is a modern BMW, hugely powerful and loaded with every electrical gizmo you can imagine. I can't wait to park it up and get the esprit out of the garage, I find it so boring 😴.
      Anyway don't judge these cars to harshly they are special. Have a nice Christmas.

    • @gvybin
      @gvybin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do agree with Stephen.
      Mark, I can be totally wrong, but I do suspect you have never driven an early Esprit?
      Otherwise you would never mention it is pathetic or just a thing to look at. If you own a restored one that is kept in good condition ( they are rare) , you would wanna drive it as much as you can.
      My neighbour has a porsche 911 G series 1989, that I helped restore. Lovely car, but although there is a timespan of 9 years between my 1980 esprit S2.2 , it does not feel more modern, it does not steer better. The Esprit is ways ahead on roadholding . The porsche does sound fantastic .
      If you compare to modern cars, just don't look into classics.
      If you compare the esprit to cars of it's time, please do and I don't mind you comparing to more powerfull V8's. You will be surprised which is the better sportscar. But DO NOT use specs to compare. You have to drive one after the other.
      I drove a porsche 928S4 with an automatic gearbox. V8 with 320pk and plenty quick and way more comfortable. But it is not the same, it is just not a sportscar. It lacks agility. It never felt like a sportscar. I am not saying it isn't the better car, but the esprit is way more engaging and fun in the corners. And in the end, you would be surprised how many people would go for the esprit if they were asked what car was most fun.
      SO definitely not a showcar. You have to drive a good one to know
