  • When I think of my favorite traditional Southern appetizers or sides, Fried Okra is always a top contender on the list. This recipe has been in my family for generations, and has proven time and again that sometimes simple is best. When it comes to frying foods, it doesn't get much easier than this method, and it still proves to be a crowd favorite every time it's served.
    Ingredients:
    1 Pound fresh okra
    2 Tbsp salt (plus more on hand to taste)
    1 Pound whole grain cornmeal
    Frying vegetable oil of your choice
    Supplies:
    Working range
    Cast iron pan or any medium sized high walled pan or pot
    Slotted spoon
    Oil thermometer (optional)
    Plate with paper towels for drying the okra after frying
    Large mixing bowl
    Here's a link that will take you to Amazon and directly to a similar cast iron pan like the one I used in this video.

    I’ve never eaten this before, looks yum and crunchy! Love the tips on how to heat the oil and avoid blisters!

      Saadiya C thanks so much for watching and please let me know your thoughts if you try it yourself. Blisters/burns are serious business when deep frying, but a few safety measures and you’ll be good to go. Make sure to subscribe for more videos to come and thanks again!

    your good, jack from Searcy Ark, living out in Ca. not any making of my mind. My mom would make Okra, with bacon grease, cloaked it up with corn meal and egg. It was about the only way i could eat it. You did a good job on how to cook it.

    Looooove okra, can’t wait for my okra to grow so I can try your recipe.
    Usually I roast it whole and then sauté it with tomato sauce and red pepper for spice

      Well that sounds equally fantastic and something I may try. This is an excellent way to fry, if yo do fry, because it showcases the okra more so than a big ball of breading. You can also always build upon this and add herbs, spices etc.

      Outdoor Indoor Texan your okra recipe is how I cook smelts (little fish), it makes an awesome crunchy beer snack. Just corn meal and salt and oil

      @@PinchofCooking Is it particularly fishy or does the cooking process even things out?

    • @PinchofCooking
      @PinchofCooking 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Outdoor Indoor Texan here is description on google “Smelt has a oily, mild taste and a soft texture. The 6-10 inch fish has an odor and flavor like freshly cut cucumber. Freshwater Smelt are considered less oily than saltwater Smelt. Smelt are usually eaten whole- including head, bones, and all.”

      I usually find them frozen in Asian supermarkets, local supermarkets are not that diverse in fish here in northeast

    very interesting, never seen so basic. I hate the way over battered, been picking okra, going to have to try basic but with a few seasoning in it

      Thanks, Bill! Let me know what you think. It’s the way my dad always made them and I love the simplicity of it. A lot of the restaurant fried okra dishes are those piles of fried batter with a teeny nugget of okra somewhere inside. Add whatever spice you like. Plenty of room to tweak.

    I grew up in north west Oklahoma, that stuff you get in a restaurant or in a bag at the store is not fried okra! The only thing I’d do differently is skillet fry instead of deep fry

    • @outdoorindoortexan
      @outdoorindoortexan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Amen, Dustin! I was on a deep fry kick when I made this, but totally agree you can skillet fry them and they’re just as good. Thanks for watching!

      Hi, Bernadette. Here’s a few options. Corn Flour, Corn Grits, Wheat Flour, Ground Oats, Breadcrumbs, Ground Flaxseed, Tortilla Chips, Cereal, or Nuts. Thanks for watching and leaving the question.

      Ha actually I had posted a story of my dad frying okra on Instagram and had a buddy message me for the recipe. BUT we were clearly both thinking okra lately.
