I can still remember when this was new, my aunt was working waitress at a restaurant, and she told me about this game. I didn't believe her till one day I took a ride with my uncle and my then baby cousin to her workplace, and I finally got to see and play it. I actually liked it quite well.
Fun fact: Only the international releases of Namco Museum Volume 2 for the PS1 featured Super Pac-Man, as the Japanese version instead featured Bomb Bee and Cutie Q. The arcade version has also appeared in other compilations, including plug and plays, and a version even appeared in Namco Museum Remix/Megamix.
Wow, I had absolutely no idea this version existed. It really should get more time in the spotlight because this is a unique spin on the Pac-Man formula without changing too much of anything,
@@reillywalker195 Most Namco compilations up to Namco Museum 50th Anniversary would include Ms. Pac-Man instead. But due to the rights of Ms. Pac-Man being surrendered to the original creators after a lawsuit, Super Pac-Man became more widely available starting with the original Pac-Man Museum.
The J2ME Deluxe version reminds me of Pac-Mania. In the second season of the 80’s “Pac Man” cartoon, Super Pac Man was introduced. He could fly, have eye beams, and a big appetite. When using his Super Power Pellet no ghost could stop him, but he couldn’t stop himself afterwards. It was then up to Pac Man to use SPM’s “time warp space hole” to get SPM inside it (which then neutralized the Super Power Pellet’s effects).
I expect we'll see more of this game now that Bandai Namco is in dispute over the rights to Ms. Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man. I quite like it, too, so I won't complain if my expectations are correct.
there were so many java phone versions. one of the best ones, which i can't find , had a special option with 4 new mazes, that would have easily been the sequel for it. they also had 4 new powerups, that were similar to pac n' pal. i'm still looking for it, because the java emulators could run it. later -1
I've probably played the 5200 version the most. I've only seen an actual cab of this once during the 80's. It was at a Sears store in an alcove beneath the escalators.
What was great about the PS1 port, along with a number of other games via Namco Museum, was that you could set the game to run in its original vertical orientation, like the arcade game. You just had to rotate the TV or monitor onto its side physically.
Super Pac-Man for the 5200 is a great looking port, such a shame it wasn't released; the only issue I really have with it is the Power Pellet timer is far shorter than in the Arcade
J2ME deluxe version of super pac man resembles pac mania but In polygonal 3D, ½ frame character animation scroll, 3d pixel arts And maximum 2² zoom-out
That is probably an emulation problem. It plays significantly better than that on my 286. It also supports a composite mode which on the proper setup uses the phantom CGA color pallet and doesnt look like a hot dog stand.
Leaving aside the arcade-perfect ones (PS if you play in Tate mode, and Win98) it's IMO a toss-up between Atari and C64. Worst one is PC-DOS... I guess being a choppy mess isn't bad enough, they also had to throw in that obnoxious beeper music.
@Diskun Just tried for myself with Exodos (don't ask) and though their setup usually allows for choosing of graphics adapters and sound cards there were no such options for this game so looks like EGA can't be accessed as you said. Not that Mobygame's EGA screenshots look much better mind you. For 1989 this seems to be a very poor release.
@Diskun I'll take a look, thanks. EDIT: It does look nice, especially for a fan-project (albeit unfinished) and runs rings around the official DOS release even in its unfinished state. That said, these things all have a place in history but at the end of the day we have many options nowadays for playing the original arcade game and I would rather play it that way.
The "Super" part is when Pac-Man eats a super pellet to become Super Pac-Man. As Super Pac-Man, he gains invincibility, faster movement speed, and the ability to eat doors.
Ah, Super Pac-Man- Namco's _official_ sequel to Pac-Man (Ms. Pac-man was a originally a hack of Pac-Man that gained an official release through Midway). That DOS port though- yikes. 1989? Really?

It's been included in _Pac-Man Museum +_ which was released recently, so Namco obviously still cares about the game.
