      Every ZX spectrum game looks like it came from a bad gaming creepypasta.

    • @Texy88
      @Texy88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Unfortunately because the Spectrum has an attribute limitation in which each 8x8-pixel character square on the screen can only contain one foreground colour and one background colour, this means that a whole mixture of colours to make Bub (and Bob, for that matter) look like the arcade original was simply impossible. This was probably as close as they were going to get given that attribute limitation.
      Notice how the two-colour platforms always contain the colour of the sprites as well as another colour. This meant that Bub, Bob and the enemies could jump through the platforms without there being colour-clash issues.
      Note that, if a person were to play _Bubble Bobble_ on a 128K Spectrum there *would* be that same music in the background as in the other versions (the 128K Spectrum had more memory and better sound capabilities than its lower-RAM counterparts).

    • @OhSayWhatIsTruth

      @@Texy88 Didn't help that the ZX Spectrum was released back in 1982, four years before Bubble Bobble came out. In some aspect, it's a miracle they even got the game running on that platform.

    • @Texy88
      @Texy88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@OhSayWhatIsTruth Or, more to the point, that the Spectrum ended up getting games at all, since Sir Clive Sinclair never intended the computer to be a games machine. It devoting less memory to the screen and to audio meant that it could run faster than its contemporaries. It was even able to cope with _Afterburner,_ while the Spectrum version (especially the 128K version) of _Chase H.Q._ is widely regarded as an absolute masterpiece; both of those games came out for it after _Bubble Bobble._

      The ZX Spectrum was pretty dated when this port came out (it launched in 1982 and even from the start it was intended as a budget computer). The issue with it was that the sprites could only handle two colours so you either had to deal with colour bleeding (where other sprites around it would temporarily be the same colour) or have a game that’s in black and white (or two select colours).

    Probably not many people know this, but even the ports that tried to be accurate to the arcade have a lot of minor differences that changes the way to play, like for example in PS1 and Saturn versions the character falls way more quickly. I can like this change because in the OG it could be tedious being all the time in "low gravity mode" but it also gives it a way different feeling gameplay. The white ghosts also throw the rocks without any advise making them a bit more challenging, overall the enemies behavior varies a bit between the arcade. And the NES release lacks some of the secrets of the Arcade (although considering how demanding they are, i dont miss them). Soundtrack wise i think Arcade is by far the best, i cant believe they screwed up the main theme in the rest of the versions, even PS1 which has CDs. Thats a bit lazy imo. I think most of the differences may be because they lost the source code but others are probably because they were a bit rushed. Although i still prefer most of the console ports despite all of the changes because... well, having to beat 100 levels with just 3 lifes in Arcade is just bullsh...

    Genuinely curious about the ZXspectrum version: Why did the jumping sound elevate in pitch when sprites started disappearing from the screen?

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably had something to do with the system not needing as much time for processing stuff with fewer items on screen, so everything, including the sound effects, speeds up. A lot of the older systems didn't have dedicated sound hardware or real-time clocks to keep track of the timings.
      Something similar would happen with the Apple II version if you played it on a faster Apple II, like the IIc+ and the IIgs in their fast modes, or with an accelerator card like the Transwarp series. Even different revisions of the 6502 chip could result in slight pitch differences.

    Nostalgia.
    I got introduced first to Bubble Bobble c64. I thought it was good because it had the secret room intact. I also played on the arcade as well. Later on I got BB NES and I thought it wasn't as good because it was less faithful to the original and lacking the secret rooms. But it also has some interesting new and hard concept of doing the 2 moments at level 99 in a way that is very hard due to the mapping of the level.
    I preferred the arcade version of true ending though, as it is about friendship and playing together. Of course, often being solo player, I simply fed coins into the second player and let Bob stand there while I defeat Super Drunk.

    I can't believe that there are so many people hating on ZX Spectrum and Apple II ports. You can't judge a port just because of its graphics and sound - you know that is hard to make a game like this run on those systems. There are just kids that don't know how games were in the past and they just consider them inferior to today's games.

      Yep. It's amazing. I wish we'd had more ports like it back in the day, but Japanese developers hardly ever shared their source code and assets with European developers. We ended up with extremely inaccurate ports that looked and/or played nothing like the originals (see Final Fight, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Shinobi, Street Fighter) or that were great, but had entirely levels missing because the developers didn't even know they were in the game or how to unlock them (see Rainbow Islands, Rod-Land).
