No matter how grammatically incorrect or misspelled words are, they are speaking English. Just because us ignorant people who just speak one expect everyone else to speak English, that is it, and as "perfectly" as me. I wish more than anything that world languages were taught to the youth in this country. Seriously imagine kids growing up with multiple languages, first through 6th learning languages, high school could be elective ones. But by the time people go to high school chances are people will know or at least understand one or more languages. As a white guy, I found this hilarious, but then I stopped to think. On the few occasions that I changed the mind of close-mind people, I was pretty proud of myself. Some of this movies are based on real events where white people really helped black people to advance. Like Cool Runnings or Hidden Figures and others.
As a teen in lily-white Belgium, our teachers made as watch Mississippi Burning and write an essay about it. I wrote how it was the most racist movie I ever saw as it did not tell the story of black people fighting against racism but a story about white saviours coming in from outside to save a bunch of helpless blacks. Some teachers were furious, as they considered the movie to be a pamphlet AGAINST racism. Others told me it was an eye-opener for them. My essay was published in a national paper AND earned me street cred among the cool kids in town, two things that rarely go together.

I wrote a half-assed paper at 16 about texting and the degradation of language that was published in a national paper. Incidentally, there are just a _lot_ of national papers. Not to say it's not something to be proud of, it's just not difficult enough to be as unbelievable as "everybody clapped."

This is how I felt about that one movie The Blind Side. The movie kept pretending it was about the hardships of the black kid, but it was actually about how awesome Sandra Bullock was for adopting him, like he’s some stray dog and she’s the hero for taking him off the street. The whole movie just felt really weird.
Every time I watch the Blindside I always wonder, how the hell she got away with that? Just because he was homeless, doesn't mean she can pluck him off the street like a stray kitten. There's gotta some paperwork and some questions that need to be asked. You just can't adopt a whole child out of nowhere. If the roles were reversed and a black man adopted a little white girl, oh police would have been in there asking some questions...

Artur Zinurov definitely has its problems, but it’s not framed as a white saviour movie imo. Plus at the time of last year’s oscars it was the only nominee I’d seen (since then I watched Get Out and absolutely loved it), so at the time I didn’t really have anything to compare it to? At least this year I’ve seen enough of the movies to say that Green Book shouldn’t have won.

At least Hidden Figures had the decency to follow the point of view of the three main black characters, they're the ones that had an arc and the main focus. Green Book on the other hand is just the story of Viggo Mortensen's character deciding to be less racist because he's got a cool black friend. Why aren't we following Don Shirley's point of view?!? Imagine if instead Kevin Costner's character was the focus of Hidden Figures and the three ladies were supporting cast.

I didn't know anything about what happened until the movie came out, and then I looked into the real story, because these "Based on a true story" movies are never accurate, I wanted to slam my head against anything hard when I found out the character wasn't real. The true story was much more powerful, but no- has to be a fictional white person breaking the glass ceiling and crap, and friending the racists, that is the only reason she got any respect in the end. If it wasn't for them clearing the way for her she would have been tossed to the side... Makes me want to vomit.

I’d highly disagree with the Titanic example. She was born into wealth and he wasn’t. That doesn’t make her “wildly successful” and him a loser, especially since he’s an amazing artist making his own way in the world and she’s just a sad pretty girl.
It drives me nuts how accurate that statement of not testing well with audiences is. If it's an interracial couple, it's usually a white man with a black woman... and *seldom* a white woman with a black man. Hell, the Cheerios commercial where a child with a white mom and a black dad pouring the cereal over her dad's heart while the dad napped because she was told it was good for hearts got such an outraged reaction because it was an interracial couple with a mixed race child. TheDoomer I enjoyed Green Book. No I don’t think it did anything to impact culture at all, but I though it was a good movie. I enjoyed the performances by the actors, their chemistry worked well, and I’m a sucker for 50’s-60’s pieces. Yes it has every cliche in the book, but I still liked it. Don’t get pissed at people for having different opinions than you. Not everyone has to have the same mindset as you. You may have loved Black Panther, while I hated it. The reason I hated BP was I felt like it was literally just Lion King with horrible CGI. The writing felt sloppy, and not to mention the cringe, cliche for Marvel having a corny as hell joke during or after a serious moment, ruining any emotion or level of intensity. Hell tbh I hate all the MCU movies, not even a fan of Infinity War. At least it ended on a depressing note, which was a big change. Either way, don’t bash people for having a different mindset

In my freshman year of high school (2013) we had to watch Freedom Writers in my English class. At the time, I remember thinking “I guess it was good, but something about it doesn’t sit right”. I felt bad about being annoyed by the hokey dialogue and the main teacher’s attitude, because it was an important movie, right? Everyone else in my class loved it (it was a predominately white & republican school), and I chalked it up to me being to cynical and a bit of a film snob (I was 15 and just getting into films that were “dark” and “edgy”). Then in 2019 Green Book beat BlacKkKlansman and I was like “Oh I think I get it now”
Seriously, both GP and Blackkkklansman were stupid nominees for best picture. Barely any of the movies in that category deserved to win, but especially those two. Spike Lee is so overrated.
May just be my opinion on Freedom Writers but that movie was about being brave enough to stand up and saying something is wrong, like when that elder Austrian woman (who hid Anne Frank) came to speak. The core of the movie is in what she said about knowing it was the right thing to do and facing down a death sentence in order to see it done. The teacher's role woulda fit a black person just as well except it was based on true events and the teacher happened to be a white woman. Unlike, Greenbook, where seemingly the black guy couldn't've done anything without a white guy present.

What you are suggesting is the group most powerless in a system forced upon them (identifying race in terms that it is currently used), has the power to somehow fix the system forced upon them by simply claiming to not believe in race. If our true goal is to make racism dissapear, then we should keep in mind that the problem is not the discriminations against minorities, but discriminations against everyone. This actress is incredible with her subtle but telling facial expressions. When she looks at the camera at 5:13 after she says, " For some reason, earning your respect is something I'm interested in," she perfectly reflected how viewers with any sense felt while watching these movies.
😂😂😂 I’d like to specifically call out Spielberg’s Lincoln. That’s exactly what that film was like also let’s completely forget Frederick Douglass’s role in advocating abolishing slavery to Lincoln. He was ultimately persuaded after several private discussions with Douglass but we get none of that in the movie.
Unless its a documentary, movies are made for drama. Even documentaries are sometimes dramatized because people is people, entertainment vs education , entertainment always wins

June 4, 2020. First time I am watching this. I am mortified... I did (do?) love some of those movies... This sketch is an invaluable lesson about systemic racism, a concept I do have a hard time to wrap my head around. This understanding feels more important than ever. I don't think all of them are necessarily bad stories, it's just the fact that white audiences are sadly not very receptive to the more important and relevant stories where black people help themselves. If they were, Hollywood would definitely make more of those films, because Hollywood will do whatever makes them money. But at the least the white saviour movies remind white people who aren't otherwise paying attention that racism is still a problem
I also like some of those movies and I think that's ok provided you're aware of the problem and that you (we as white people) are being pandered to. And that you make an effort to watch films with POC leads which AREN'T white saviour-y.

No matter how grammatically incorrect or misspelled words are, they are speaking English. Seriously imagine kids growing up with multiple languages, first through 6th learning languages, high school could be elective ones. As a teen in lily-white Belgium, our teachers made as watch Mississippi Burning and write an essay about it. I wrote how it was the most racist movie I ever saw as it did not tell the story of black people fighting against racism but a story about white saviours coming in from outside to save a bunch of helpless blacks. Some teachers were furious, as they considered the movie to be a pamphlet AGAINST racism. Others told me it was an eye-opener for them.
My essay was published in a national paper AND earned me street cred among the cool kids in town, two things that rarely go together.
What national paper was it published in? This seems like one of those “and everybody clapped” type of stories.

I wrote a half-assed paper at 16 about texting and the degradation of language that was published in a national paper. Incidentally, there are just a _lot_ of national papers. This is how I felt about that one movie The Blind Side. The movie kept pretending it was about the hardships of the black kid, but it was actually about how awesome Sandra Bullock was for adopting him, like he’s some stray dog and she’s the hero for taking him off the street. At least Hidden Figures had the decency to follow the point of view of the three main black characters, they're the ones that had an arc and the main focus. Green Book on the other hand is just the story of Viggo Mortensen's character deciding to be less racist because he's got a cool black friend. Why aren't we following Don Shirley's point of view?!?

I didn't know anything about what happened until the movie came out, and then I looked into the real story, because these "Based on a true story" movies are never accurate, I wanted to slam my head against anything hard when I found out the character wasn't real.
The true story was much more powerful, but no- has to be a fictional white person breaking the glass ceiling and crap, and friending the racists, that is the only reason she got any respect in the end. If it wasn't for them clearing the way for her she would have been tossed to the side...

That she had the strength of character to just do it, despite, I'm sure- people being asses is far more impressive than some guy who started out being oblivious to what she was going through, white knighting it.

What really annoys me with people who think saying "white savior" characters need to go out the window is somehow an attack on white people (I'm as white as you can get skin wise though I'm mixed) - I would bet would be the same people who would freak out if a "based on a true story" came out where they put a fictional POC in to be the person who made all the lead white person's dreams come true or some crap.

It drives me nuts how accurate that statement of not testing well with audiences is. If it's an interracial couple, it's usually a white man with a black woman... and *seldom* a white woman with a black man.

TheDoomer I enjoyed Green Book. No I don’t think it did anything to impact culture at all, but I though it was a good movie. I enjoyed the performances by the actors, their chemistry worked well, and I’m a sucker for 50’s-60’s pieces. Yes it has every cliche in the book, but I still liked it. Don’t get pissed at people for having different opinions than you. Not everyone has to have the same mindset as you. You may have loved Black Panther, while I hated it. The reason I hated BP was I felt like it was literally just Lion King with horrible CGI. The writing felt sloppy, and not to mention the cringe, cliche for Marvel having a corny as hell joke during or after a serious moment, ruining any emotion or level of intensity. Hell tbh I hate all the MCU movies, not even a fan of Infinity War. At least it ended on a depressing note, which was a big change. Either way, don’t bash people for having a different mindset

In my freshman year of high school (2013) we had to watch Freedom Writers in my English class. At the time, I remember thinking “I guess it was good, but something about it doesn’t sit right”. I felt bad about being annoyed by the hokey dialogue and the main teacher’s attitude, because it was an important movie, right? Everyone else in my class loved it (it was a predominately white & republican school), and I chalked it up to me being to cynical and a bit of a film snob (I was 15 and just getting into films that were “dark” and “edgy”). Then in 2019 Green Book beat BlacKkKlansman and I was like “Oh I think I get it now”

May just be my opinion on Freedom Writers but that movie was about being brave enough to stand up and saying something is wrong, like when that elder Austrian woman (who hid Anne Frank) came to speak. The core of the movie is in what she said about knowing it was the right thing to do and facing down a death sentence in order to see it done.
The teacher's role woulda fit a black person just as well except it was based on true events and the teacher happened to be a white woman. Unlike, Greenbook, where seemingly the black guy couldn't've done anything without a white guy present.

I’d like to specifically call out Spielberg’s Lincoln. That’s exactly what that film was like also let’s completely forget Frederick Douglass’s role in advocating abolishing slavery to Lincoln. He was ultimately persuaded after several private discussions with Douglass but we get none of that in the movie.
Unless its a documentary, movies are made for drama. Even documentaries are sometimes dramatized because people is people, entertainment vs education , entertainment always wins

This sketch is an invaluable lesson about systemic racism, a concept I do have a hard time to wrap my head around. This understanding feels more important than ever. I don't think all of them are necessarily bad stories, it's just the fact that white audiences are sadly not very receptive to the more important and relevant stories where black people help themselves. If they were, Hollywood would definitely make more of those films, because Hollywood will do whatever makes them money. But at the least the white saviour movies remind white people who aren't otherwise paying attention that racism is still a problem
I also like some of those movies and I think that's ok provided you're aware of the problem and that you (we as white people) are being pandered to. And that you make an effort to watch films with POC leads which AREN'T white saviour-y.
