He definitely lost his edge after his throne was secured. The entire Imperial system was inefficient and rife with corruption and waste. All the Rebels had to do to convince the rest of the galaxy to revolt against it was to destroy the Death Star twice. Look at how quickly crowds gather on Coruscant itself to CELEBRATE the death of the Emperor. If he had maintained his gentle, grandfatherly persona in public for the rest of his reign, the Rebels might have had a bit more trouble convincing the galaxy to revolt against him.
@@HouseOfAlastrian He's not even the only one who sees it. Revolts against the Empire's rule were huge in number even in the early days, when the Emperor would appear to be untouchable; And after Episode 4, Inspector Thanoth tells Vader (before allowing himself to get killed) that the Emperor has grown old and weak, and can't really navigate the 'machinery' of the Empire.
At the end of episode VI Vader doesn't throw the emperor in the reactor because he cares about Luke but because since Palpatine has unlimited power he might have saved the generators by injecting enough voltage.
Anyone else notice the picture of Palpatine found on the wall of one of the (subway) terminals in the Star Wars Battlefront 2 campaign, right after Iden Versio abandoned the Empire? I found that propaganda poster very interesting because it showed that a.) Palpatine was still being placed in the eyes of the public frequently, even if he was withdrawn by that point, and b.) The poster portrays Palpatine as he was before his scarring in the fight with Windu... despite this being decades later, meaning that the public may not have been aware of the extent of or permanent nature of the Emperors injuries during that battle.
In the Rebels episode "Empire day", there was a broadcast on the holonet about the anniversary, and there, Palpatine was photoshopped back to normal. I think he mainly hid himself because he was disfigured, and ocassioanally broadcasted some speech or something, with his look changed. Even if someone believed his lie about the jedi assassination and felt pity for his disfigurement, people naturally feel uncomfortable around people like him, and those feelings wouldn't serve his reign.
theMcWOPPER Surely rich douche would have built a massive indoors beach at some point, don't you think? (Plus, there is an absurdly high number of habitable planets in Star Wars, to the point where uninhabitable ones are seemingly rarer. Good ol' Palps could have just bought a planet like Scarif and then spent the rest of eternity being attended by generations of slaves and servants.)
The Emperor was the father of the Galaxy, a beacon of hope and progress in the Galaxy. The guy who brought justice to the Jedi avenging his fallen sith brothers and sisters. May the memory and glory of this great man never be forgotten! Once again the Empire will rise and we shall have again peace!
Kind of makes you think it was not the idea of ruling that enthralled Darth Sidious it was the immense power that he would get from ruling the galaxy that enthralled him. This is the very essence of the Sith, the Sith do not care about ruling and dealing with the technicalities and concessions of the galaxy, they only care about obtaining power, the idea and feel of power. That was probably why Darth Sidious was not interested in being in public life or in the political sphere unless it meant obtaining more power for himself. The whole purpose of the empire was to simply assure Darth Sidious that everyone and everything in the galaxy was brought into a state of order that would preserve his state of power and control of the galaxy. As far as the people are concerned, they either looked at Palpatine as a beloved ruler or an oppressive, psychotic, tyrant.
I feel like he should have worked on the whole immortality thing before becoming emporer. Like you got all the time in the world to become emporer but only so long to figure out immortality
If only Palpatine still had Plagueis around, then he could've unlocked that secret. But ironically, by killing his master, Palpatine had thrown away his chance at immortality.
@@chrisblaze1484 That could've been why Palpatine became a good planner. The one time he went without a plan, Plagueis pulled a Captain America on him by keeping the immortality secret to memory. 😆
You have to admit, it’s surprising how modest Sidious is, even when he became royalty he still only wore a simple black cloak. Tarkin always was a smart guy.
I don't know if it really conflicts with this, but I always preferred to imagine that he did just fade away from public view. He had his Empire, and he wanted to strengthen and maintain it, but he had more important things that only he could do. He had mostly the right people in the right places, and properly arrayed in ways that they had to fight Rachel other, either to move into a position where they could try to assault him, or prove their worth, and climb the power structure. They also knew that certain things would fall apart without him, so some plans were never tried. He had Vader to deal with issues. He had agents to oversee things, and kept in contact with them just enough to keep them in place, but he could retire to deal with Sith things only he was capable of, and not worry much. If something happened, he was probably safe, and if he needed to, he could blame it on his underlings. That's me, at least.
In my version during order 66 palpatiene told the public he discovered he was force sensitive and it saved his life from windu and yoda and told the public he wouldn’t use the power for he wanted to be like others
the problem with palpatine was this: 1: he wasn't willing to admit that there are things that he dosen't know. 2: he wasn't willing to admit that fear and harshness are not a sound basis for politics and management. 3 all combined, this could result only in demoralization within the empire and weaknesses that others could exploit within it and outside of it.
That's the most logical development of the character, and rather reminiscent of the evolution of Adolf Hitler. While he was campaigning and acting as Chancellor of Weimar Germany, Hitler was significantly active in the public eye, but once he accomplished absolute power, he gradually faded from the public and rarely gave speeches or made public appearances. This would most likely be the case with Palpatine.
Thanks for answering this question I submitted to you a couple weeks ago! I have a follow up question though: "Did Palpatine recede from the public eye to hide his undeniable Sith identifiers?" I mean, he's the wealthiest man in the galaxy, yet he only wore black Sith monk robes and his yellow eyes would've been a dead giveaway that he was, in fact, a Sith, correct? Was that the reason he became more reclusive?
Palpatine: Acts like a kindly grandfather. _Jedi assassination attempt_ Palpatine: Acts evil People: The assassination event changed him. Palpatine: Why would the people think such a thing!?
This man is a legend of the Galaxy, struck down during his reign by those evil Jedi and rebel scum. The flak this great man gets for trying to bring civility to the Galaxy. Long live Palpatine! Never forget those imperial lives lost one the galactic civil war.
Emperor Palpatine's character is a total douche. He just sits around dressed up like it was Halloween. Looking out his window dreaming up more boring stuff. Instead of chilling at some tropical island planet filled with beautiful woman. He's clearly not to bright.
xelif154 are you sure about that? He got a scrotum face after he zapped his force lightnings into his own face. Not much of an pussy magnet he was after the jedi purdge
That was a not-very popular retcon implied or suggested in the New Jedi Order books. It's generally ignored; at best, he knew they were coming and made preparations, but based on what we actually see of him in the books and movies covering his rise to power, he clearly didn't know or care about the Yuuzhan Vong at all , or if he did it was well into his plans for conquest were already underway or even after he came to power. If he knew the Vong they were rivals to be eliminated; he did not create the Empire solely to defeat them.
Honestly, I think a lot of people would be afraid of him... But then, he used the disfigurement as a way to show the public what the Jedi did to him. He controlled the senate, the courts everything. So people would feel sorry for him, pity on him but additionally see his views as correct and as such side with him. So some of the public would view him as a hero. Additionally, at his age, for him to stay in power, people may question things. So I guess he took a back seat in that regard. For those who didn't side with him, well, there would be fear.
I think Palpatine is like Hitler. Brilliantly evil and cunning in the beginning in ascension to power, but kind of lost there touch with reality towards the end of their life which resulted in their downfalls.
Atleast Hitler was probably once a good person who just lost his mind. Palpatine was rotten to the core the minute he was born, even Plagueis called him ''a bad fruit. a rotten boy''
Hitler never had a chance at being a good person. He was brutalized by his alcoholic father on a daily basis. That is the kind of abuse that creates criminals and psychopaths. Palpatine also had an antagonistic relationship with his father. Nobody is -born- evil in the real world. It is the environment they grow up in and the people of influence over them who shape them that way, genetic predisposition or not. Although we are also talking about the Star Wars universe and it is possible for one to be born evil. Just look at Emperor Vitiate. He was always this black hole at the centre of everyone's universe, devouring everyone and everything around him.
There are cases of serial killers and such who grew up in a totally normal and loving family and went on to become vile psychopaths for no definitive reason. Although it is incredibly rare, i truly do believe some people are born into this world with a rotten, putrid soul.
@@Da1337Man Yes, there is variation within any population. Altruistic tendencies tend to be more common than psychopathy, because lone wolves die alone and altruism is more conducive to the group's survival, hence if you have a genetic tendency towards altruism than selfishness, everyone in the group is more likely to lead more offspring than if you have one douchebag taking everything for himself.
I always find it funny In Rebels and recent novels Rebels blame Palpatine for the Empires cruel acts, when he’s really isolated and let Empire rule itself through the Moffs and loosely the Senate We all know he’s evil, but how can he be blamed when he’s not really ruling, his cronies did do things in his name and there were times he did personally act out like creating trap for Rebel Spies on Coruscaunt, but how can Palpatine be blamed for what others did when he’s really isolated at his palace learning secrets of the Force Sure his crime in those aspects is appointing those criminals and turning a blind ear on the suffering of his people, but I really see people like Tarkin and Vader responsible for the Empires crimes mostly
The reason the Rebel Alliance existed is the things he did BEFORE and DURING his becoming Emperor. He tricked the whole galaxy into electing him in response to a crisis that HE manufactured through his and his master's influence over the Trade Federation. Then he manipulated the whole galaxy into a war where HE led BOTH sides of it so that he could trick the Senate into granting him the emergency powers he needed to take full control. Finally, he lied to the Senate about the Jedi having a plot to take over the galaxy and that their attempt on his life was in service to that goal, as opposed to removing a dangerous Sith Lord and returning power to the Senate. And on that subject, he lied about being a Sith Lord. Sith have been the enemy of the Republic for thousands of years, and what was left of them after the events on Ruusan a thousand years ago are pretty much fugitives in the Republic. Palpatine is a criminal, a fraud, a member of an illegal organization and a traitor to the Republic. Everything else his cronies have done in his name are just extra reasons for the Rebels to overthrow the Empire. Don't forget that their formal name is "The Alliance to Restore the Republic". Even if the Emperor's hands are perfectly clean, overthrowing him is still the goal of the Rebels, as you can't have a Republic when it has an Emperor on the throne.
General Coma that’s true and I agree he’s accountable for the deeds of his officials that did corruption and genocide in his name Still the Rebels made it as If he did it himself Like Alderaan there’s differing accounts how Palpatine responded, in one account he seemingly sadistically approved of it according to the New Hope Infinity Comic In Rise and Fall of Darth Vader Palpatine wasn’t notified at all, when Vader asked Tarkin that they should talk to him first, Tarkin scolded Vader and ordered him to go with it Other accounts say he was shocked when Alderraan was destroyed, as Alderaan was a Core World and a founder of Old Republic I have yet to see how he responded in Canon I just feel like that while yes he’s a demon, he’s demonized way too much more than his subordinates who really did the deeds Yes he’s accountable as he’s responsible for putting them there or created system that brought them there Still as I said the Rebels seemed to demonize him way too much, they were perfectly willing to assassinate him at Endor when they thought the Death Star II was incomplete when in other situations they capture other Imperial officials when possible
Sounds like the Emperor became a hermit much like Yoda & Obi Wan did after the fall of the republic, only that he was a powerful hermit who techinally ruled the galaxy or at least a fair chunk of it!
Maybe not... but he still wouldn't want the people to see him as the bad guy. Hence his unassuming 'grandfatherly' statesman facade during the prequels. The Palpatine we see is a master of Machiavellian manipulation, and appearing to be the good guy is a major part of that... it's how he was able to woo Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side. It's how he convinced the entire galaxy that he only hesitantly accepted the emergency powers the Senate voted to him. It's how he turned Mace Windu's attempt at destroying a Sith Lord completely upside down into a nefarious Jedi plot to assassinate the Supreme Chancellor and overthrow the Republic. He cared enough about appearances of good and evil to carry all of that out. Framing himself as the victim of a malevolent Jedi conspiracy was the way to making absolute political power permanent. He had to make the Jedi look like the bad guys. Later on, he has to make the Rebel Alliance look like anarchic terrorists... to conflate senators like Mon Mothma and Bail Organa who want to legally restore democracy with murderous radicals like Saw Gerrera.
Palps is a tragic figure IMHO, because if he hadn't killed his master Darth Plagueis, then immortality would have been his (especially since Plagueis saw him as an equal and loved researching the force more than running the politics - not that he wasn't good at it! Heego Damask (Plagueise's public persona!) was after all a financier of the first order, a person rich enough to afford whatever he wanted! - so Palpatine would have been just as powerful as he was after killing Plagueis, but Immortality kind of eluded him (even in the EU essence transfer and cloned bodies were only a stop-gap-measure after all!), especially since he didn't have his master's patience to study death and how to influence the midichlorians!)
He's top much like his master in his purpose of trying for immortality and leaving the actual ruling to others, he could simply have done as his master did and grabbed immortality first, as that would have made power grabbing that much easier
I think the main thing that worked in Palpatines favor was that most people in the Empire had no idea what a Sith was and those that did believed them either extinct(as in the last publicly known one Dooku being killed) or a myth. Only the Jedi/some of the Clone troopers really understood what a Sith was. Probably the Hutt's with their long lifespan most of the Hutt's alive, great grandparents would have dealt with the old Sith Empire/s.(I am assuming they bother to remember their history, especially after their recent encounters with Dooku and Maul) Those and anyone who managed of escape Darth Vader.
His take over of the senate was pure genius. Power lies in perception. Its not the king's heritage that gives him power but people's idea of the king and how it relates to them. basically who controls the most assets. like Cersie Lanister demonstrated to Little Finger. it doesn't matter what you know if you can't overpower your enemy with it. she did the same with Ned Starkk. Palps did it to the entire Jedi Order.
Old boy must have been pretty damn bored. I mean when a mortal being has achieved all of his top-tier goals, what else is there? Didn't the Sith Order despise complacency? Poor Palpy, tsk..tsk..tsk; if only he accepted that one may conquer the Galaxy, preside over it, but one can never take it with him.
I wonder what he thought when he finally got everything he wanted I mean the moment the empire was officially declared. Actually I wanna know the boring stuff like if he ever felt stressed out taking on that much responsibility haha

It may also be worth noting that in propaganda posters on Vardos, images of the emperor are of him before he is disfigured and scarred.
Yeah i noticed that too...
Me Too , badass
And in Rebels when he tries to tempt Ezra in hologram form he looks quite nice 😉
This is just uncalled for. Palpatine may be imperfect, but he's no Kevin Spacey...

Nah he fits
I think Palpatine led a smart life as emperor
At the end of episode VI Vader doesn't throw the emperor in the reactor because he cares about Luke but because since Palpatine has unlimited power he might have saved the generators by injecting enough voltage.
DO IT!!!!!!!
*Dew It!
(Fake injuries)
SkiddyGaming They Werent injuries, that was his true face

In the Rebels episode "Empire day", there was a broadcast on the holonet about the anniversary, and there, Palpatine was photoshopped back to normal. I think he mainly hid himself because he was disfigured, and ocassioanally broadcasted some speech or something, with his look changed. Even if someone believed his lie about the jedi assassination and felt pity for his disfigurement, people naturally feel uncomfortable around people like him, and those feelings wouldn't serve his reign.
To have Power or to become the Senate? I choose....early retirement. Screw everything else just lay on a beach until I die.
Madison Atteberry There are no beaches on Coruscant.
Madison Atteberry but there are Strip-clubs Coruscant.

Short of.
theMcWOPPER Surely rich douche would have built a massive indoors beach at some point, don't you think? (Plus, there is an absurdly high number of habitable planets in Star Wars, to the point where uninhabitable ones are seemingly rarer. Good ol' Palps could have just bought a planet like Scarif and then spent the rest of eternity being attended by generations of slaves and servants.)

The Emperor was the father of the Galaxy, a beacon of hope and progress in the Galaxy. The guy who brought justice to the Jedi avenging his fallen sith brothers and sisters. May the memory and glory of this great man never be forgotten! Once again the Empire will rise and we shall have again peace!
Palpatine killed more Sith himself than most Jedi
Okay there Grand Moff
Lucas King's rendition of this song is bloody brilliant; works so well in videos like this
Kind of makes you think it was not the idea of ruling that enthralled Darth Sidious it was the immense power that he would get from ruling the galaxy that enthralled him.
Ironically, he was a joke to the ancient sith. They hated him.
I feel like he should have worked on the whole immortality thing before becoming emporer. Like you got all the time in the world to become emporer but only so long to figure out immortality
In the old lore he was a body jumper so he did have immortality or close to it at least
If only Palpatine still had Plagueis around, then he could've unlocked that secret. But ironically, by killing his master, Palpatine had thrown away his chance at immortality.
well that was plagueis's plan... sidious just had to kill him before then... pretty myopic to say the least.
@@chrisblaze1484
That could've been why Palpatine became a good planner. The one time he went without a plan, Plagueis pulled a Captain America on him by keeping the immortality secret to memory. 😆
Ya know what they say... You cant spell Palpatine without pal!
#palpatinedidnothingwrong
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise?
Zalty Not a story the Jedi would tell. Kind of secret with the whole Sith Rule of Two thing.
Senate power I prefer sandy senate high ground unlimited power with some super death sticks
You don't want to sell death sticks... you want to go home and rethink your life.
I'm actually opening a galactic bakery and I need flour UNLIMITED FLOUR!!!
this video didn't tell us how the public viewed him. it's an exposé on how smart he was and what his goals were.
Great Emperor. 11/10 -IGN
Father on on alderaan: " haha dont worry about palpatine son. he is just an old m... Death star: "You may fire when ready"
the problem with palpatine was this: 1: he wasn't willing to admit that there are things that he dosen't know. 2: he wasn't willing to admit that fear and harshness are not a sound basis for politics and management. 3 all combined, this could result only in demoralization within the empire and weaknesses that others could exploit within it and outside of it.
He tried to play the charade with Ezra at first.
I have a follow up question though:
"Did Palpatine recede from the public eye to hide his undeniable Sith identifiers?"
I mean, he's the wealthiest man in the galaxy, yet he only wore black Sith monk robes and his yellow eyes would've been a dead giveaway that he was, in fact, a Sith, correct? Was that the reason he became more reclusive?
Britton Thompson it was because he had nothing to gain (POWERRRRR) by being a good figure anymore.
He was a good emporer. After years of war he brought peace to the galaxy and that's something even the republic had trouble with.
Palpatine: Acts like a kindly grandfather.
_Jedi assassination attempt_
Palpatine: Acts evil
People: The assassination event changed him.
Palpatine: Why would the people think such a thing!?
If one has that much power, they should be very bored quite often I'd imagine
he should have conquered the next galaxy
An Obi Wan, Palpatine, and Yoda origin movie would be so good!!
This man is a legend of the Galaxy, struck down during his reign by those evil Jedi and rebel scum. The flak this great man gets for trying to bring civility to the Galaxy. Long live Palpatine! Never forget those imperial lives lost one the galactic civil war.
"Theese rumors cannot beeee alllowed to parsissst"
Emperor Palpatine's character is a total douche. He just sits around dressed up like it was Halloween. Looking out his window dreaming up more boring stuff. Instead of chilling at some tropical island planet filled with beautiful woman. He's clearly not to bright.
If he had Brain One in that HUGE melon on top of his head, he would be living the sweet life up in Southern Californias beautiful San Fernando valley!
Gregory Cotter Something tells me he would burn in the sun like a vampire.
Gregory Cotter every time i see him i think, where are the bitches!
xelif154 are you sure about that? He got a scrotum face after he zapped his force lightnings into his own face. Not much of an pussy magnet he was after the jedi purdge
to om he's rich though lmao
god your soundtrack is so haunting. It really hits hard when talking about that creepy weasel sidious!
He isn't a sith. He's the Senate
I believe I heard someone say that Palpatine knew about the yuuzhan vang and that's the reason why he formed the empire
Abdul Bah ikr

"The greatest trick the Devil pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist."
I think Palpatine is like Hitler. Brilliantly evil and cunning in the beginning in ascension to power, but kind of lost there touch with reality towards the end of their life which resulted in their downfalls.
We had that thinking long ago the Galactic Empire itseld is based off of Nazi Germany
His imperial Majesty Emperor Palpatine! I’ll will always be loyal to my Lord. May he Reign Forever!!
Loved the music on this video 👍
Emperor Pablotine
Whats is the music in this video called? Been looking for it for a while.
I always find it funny
In Rebels and recent novels Rebels blame Palpatine for the Empires cruel acts, when he’s really isolated and let Empire rule itself through the Moffs and loosely the Senate
We all know he’s evil, but how can he be blamed when he’s not really ruling, his cronies did do things in his name and there were times he did personally act out like creating trap for Rebel Spies on Coruscaunt, but how can Palpatine be blamed for what others did when he’s really isolated at his palace learning secrets of the Force
Sure his crime in those aspects is appointing those criminals and turning a blind ear on the suffering of his people, but I really see people like Tarkin and Vader responsible for the Empires crimes mostly
General Coma that’s true and I agree he’s accountable for the deeds of his officials that did corruption and genocide in his name
Still the Rebels made it as If he did it himself
Like Alderaan there’s differing accounts how Palpatine responded, in one account he seemingly sadistically approved of it according to the New Hope Infinity Comic
In Rise and Fall of Darth Vader Palpatine wasn’t notified at all, when Vader asked Tarkin that they should talk to him first, Tarkin scolded Vader and ordered him to go with it
Other accounts say he was shocked when Alderraan was destroyed, as Alderaan was a Core World and a founder of Old Republic
I have yet to see how he responded in Canon
I just feel like that while yes he’s a demon, he’s demonized way too much more than his subordinates who really did the deeds
Yes he’s accountable as he’s responsible for putting them there or created system that brought them there
Still as I said the Rebels seemed to demonize him way too much, they were perfectly willing to assassinate him at Endor when they thought the Death Star II was incomplete when in other situations they capture other Imperial officials when possible
Jeff Engert Long Live The Empire
Christopher Sanchez The Empire did nothing wrong though
How am i not following your content is amazing
Sounds like the Emperor became a hermit much like Yoda & Obi Wan did after the fall of the republic, only that he was a powerful hermit who techinally ruled the galaxy or at least a fair chunk of it!
In Corusant first u get the senate, then u get the power, then have u ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plaguis the wise?
Palpatine seems to have cared more about people thinking he stopped partying than the Death Star blowing up.
Palpatine did nothing wrong.
Yeah you need help
Yeah so what happened to the Jedi and alderaan
Everyone loves our beloved Emperor!
I absolutely love how evil he is and that he enjoys being evil, makes it even better
It's not really believable though. Nobody wants to think he is the bad guy or be thought of as the bad guy... not even Hitler or Stalin.
Jeff Engert I'm pretty sure Palpatine doesn't care/believe in good and evil
Nathan Broderick He had so much power, more power than anyone on earth can imagine, I Cant Blame Him for being kinda arrogant and Evil
Jeff Engert I Have Never Been Happier Than When I Found Out Bail Organa Died On Alderaan..
1:18 and 2:01 whats the name of the music playing in the background please

So palpatine is Kevin spacey, that’s darker than Ani killing the younglings
Jackisthedogsbollocks69 at least Palpatine didn't diddle the younglings
megatronVS that we know off
You're telling me his relationship with Ani never turned sexual?
Funny thing is, Kevin Spacey actually acted for a time at Ian McDiarmid's theatre in London (the Almedia).

Palpatine made the galaxy great again
Please forgive me for making a Donald Trump joke i 2018
He's top much like his master in his purpose of trying for immortality and leaving the actual ruling to others, he could simply have done as his master did and grabbed immortality first, as that would have made power grabbing that much easier
I think the main thing that worked in Palpatines favor was that most people in the Empire had no idea what a Sith was and those that did believed them either extinct(as in the last publicly known one Dooku being killed) or a myth.
Only the Jedi/some of the Clone troopers really understood what a Sith was.
Probably the Hutt's with their long lifespan most of the Hutt's alive, great grandparents would have dealt with the old Sith Empire/s.(I am assuming they bother to remember their history, especially after their recent encounters with Dooku and Maul)
Those and anyone who managed of escape Darth Vader.

At 00:29 doesn't that ornament on his desk look awfully similar in shape to a Sith holocron?
1:29 In what direction is that thing on the right looking?!
UNLIMITED POWAH
I wonder what he thought when he finally got everything he wanted I mean the moment the empire was officially declared. Actually I wanna know the boring stuff like if he ever felt stressed out taking on that much responsibility haha
