    Talking about the visibility for the helmsman on board, the assumption made at 6:18 is correct. In these days, luna rossa decided to remove the wind screen and they have installed a new "canopy" (like the ones you can see on fighter jet) to increase the visibility for the helmsman and, at the same time, to keep the air flow steady and laminar as possible.

      Accent can be a tad hard to follow, just use captions and slow speed down to 0.75.

    I think this year's Cup has completely lost the plot. More batteries and computers, less sailors and sailing. No national identity to these national teams, and a defender betraying its own nation in a money grab. I can't see much to like.

      I don't understand (maybe cause my bad English): ok about the tecnology, but (I don't know much about others) LR is Italian, the crew is almost all Italians (just Spithill and a couple of men off board are not Italian), sponsor are Italian, the boat is build in Italy by Italians, why no national identity? Another thing: even if it were as you say (less identity and more technology), why would it be so wrong? Time passes and the world changes.
      Honestly, since it was decided the return monohulls (not Ellison's horrible catamarans) the America's Cup has become important again (as evidenced by the last edition and the great interest on this one).
      Sorry for the length and the English.

      @@lazios I think you make good points, though a foreign skipper is a big deal, but it just feels like it's gotten, as far as the whole team is concerned, like you always see a French designer on an Italian team, and last year he was on the British team, and if these guys just want to move around for money we'll fine but I don't think they should be racing under flags for that. If it's a professional sports league with no national loyalty, I'd rather they just said so.

      @@markm417 Spithill is not necessarily the skipper (ie there is no a “first guide” like F1, probably what he has been promised I guess are the starts), in any case there are Italian skippers on board (Olympic and world champions like Bruni, Tita and Gradoni), probably they will alternate (as in the last edition with Bruni).
      Anyway the point of my comment (if you go to the LR site you will be able to realize it) is that the “project” itself is very Italian (if you want to say so), but (for example) if Bertelli believes that there is a super competent Swede and wants him “on board”, I don't see what's wrong with that, it works in that way any company, sports team etc, I don't understand why for an event like the America's Cup it should be any different.
      However, I don't want to convince anyone (also because I know practically nothing about sailing), and it's right that everyone has their own opinions. 🍺

      @lazios I mostly agree with you. It's just that they're claiming national identity so that creates an expectation. So Manchester United is different to the Great Britain Olympic team. And when New Zealand 'hosts' in Spain, I feel like those connections are being strained. So I agree with you, it's a professional sports team. It's just not a national team, in my opinion. But mostly I hope you enjoy watching it this summer and good luck to your favorites - I dig that silver boat!

      Lost the plot? Not at all! Just as F1 racing has evolved from its roots of the 1920's, so has the AC. There's no disputing current foiling monohulls are a far cry from the beauty of the J class of old, but nothing stands still. It's human nature to evolve technology and these SV's show case both sailing ingenuity and the technology used for control systems. Sail GP has gone a step further with all recorded data onboard being shared between teams. The cat's are essentially a one class design, bringing to bear the skill of each team to make the difference. Which format is best? Sail GP sharing of data leads to faster learning and development. Secrecy rewards the design sector of each team as well as the sailors. As to national identity... that's long gone across the board in most professional sports with teams drawing on global resources, coaching and players.
